Kansas City 'One More Cup' Closing Contradicts City Hall Biz Friendly Claims

One of the very best locally owned coffee shops in Kansas City is calling it quits.

Here's their announcement:

They're far too nice to do it so we will . . .

THE BELOVED COFFEE SHOP SHUT DOWN REMINDS US THAT KCMO HYPE ABOUT "BUSINESS FRIENDLY" CITY HALL IS NOTHING MORE THAN PROPAGANDA!!! KANSAS CITY IS ACTUALLY A PRETTY HORRIBLE PLACE TO RUN A SMALL BIZ!!!

Sure, big companies garner a litany of tax breaks and special considerations whereas small biz is overly regulated, hit with one politically-charged mandate after the next and confronted with a litany of taxes.

With every shut down there are always trolls who blame the owners but in this case fault falls directly on City Hall.

A few examples:

- Wornall, the street where OMC is located, is a hot mess of a road that has been horrible to navigate for the better part of a year thanks to horribly planned streetscaping followed by, ironically, a Winter pothole crisis that has yet to be fixed

- There's also the question of crime: In 2017 an early morning shooting spree scared away a lot of biz from this block

- Worst of all, the current property tax fight hits small biz harder than most. It's no coincidence that we're noticing an uptick in biz shut downs when assessments have increased more than 400% in some instances thanks to a faulty process.

Most small biz in KC shuts down within 5 years but this popular locale, which garnered a fiercely loyal clientele and seemed poised for the long run, did everything right yet still couldn't find a place in a horrifically overtaxed, violent and divisive local marketplace.

You decide . . .

  1. If political donations aren't part of your budget in KC. Then you really can't afford to do business. Sad.

I think Sly's policies had a bigger role in this than Trump.

    Bullshit.

Wornall has been jacked up for 3 years, NOT 1 year.

It's like a nightmare that just keeps coming back.

First they fix the road, I guess, kind of.

Then tear it up for the gas company.

Fix it, then tear it up for the sewers - and now, they are tearing it up again. From 85th to 95th it is finally ok. North of there, you gotta crive your car like you're a Slalom Downhill racer to avoid potholes (BOTH OF MY CARS ARE OUT OF ALIGNMENT EVERY 6 MONTHS.) cones, construction, back hoes (Hee HEE) and "Road Closed" signs everywhere.

Now, I hear, they are going to wreck 75th and Wornall for, - wait for it - TWO YEARS!

I'm moving to Aleppo, where there are fewer black killers (Yeah, they are moving in.) and the city is in better shape.

  5. ^^^^ Agree. You need to masturbate a lot more.

  6. Everything Tony said bad about KC is true and impacts OMC. What wasnt said is that all those businesses on Wornall have the shittiest parking. Park there and hope your door isnt taken off by traffic.

They would have done better if they were where Crows coffee is. Crows sucks by the way...always tastes burnt and oily.

  7. after working for 20 years as a attorney for small business owners and watching city departments do everything to jack with and extract more fees from small businesses, they only surprise is that we have any to speak of.

  8. I'm actually surprised you can create a biz plan based on sales of beans steeped in water. Don't get me wrong, I'd like to support them more, but I'm usually broke and cheap (a surprisingly good combo). When I'm looking at spending $6 for 3#'s of burger in the grocery store or a cup of coffee; the food always wins out. There's a little coffee store around the corner in my neighborhood that is never packed, and they put a lot of bucks into the building. I wish 'em well, but they can't be long for that store.

  9. Most coffee shops are selling a self esteem booster--to start their day--and the coffee is actually free. Of course it is cheaper to brew at home and pour it into your To Go cup. That's not why people go to coffee shops. They are rubbing elbows with their tribe. Suiting up for the race of the day. Establishing their intentions to succeed--vanquish foes, and navigate the potholes in their lives. It's the tribe, baby.

Sorry about One More Cup. I went there once as a guest (I brew at home)and it WAS charming. Now notice Tony might have mentioned the address, but did not. No love for you! (that's Tony as the soup Nazi).

And good to know now 75th & Wornall will be jacked up for 2 more years! No more visits to THAT Aldi! Geez, what reasons remain to risk my car's alignment venturing into KCMO? Since March 15th, I've lost the Tivoli, the Cinemark on the Plaza, First Fridays in the Crossroads. And hell to the no I won't be going to the CrossroadsKC's street party Sat. nite. Are you kidding me? I Want MY M80? Talk about a tone-deaf poster and theme.

See CrossroadsKC.org. So folks will shoot off loud explosives while free bands blare 80's music and unemployed urban yutes congregate, with weapons, around the food trucks? Is this like Level 2 of a human video game??? Pop Pop Pop. Are you still dancing?--to Gloria Gaynor's "It's Raining Men", hallelujah? (Made you sing, made you sing this brain worm..." Are you still standing? At this free street party brought to you by Sly and the Gang?

What's next? Level 3, Jeff Owens and the city funding of NTDF/Neighborhood Tourism Development Fund, adds PAINT BALL???

    Not my tribe.

  12. 8:49: There is plenty of parking in back of the building, but I agree Wornall is a clusterfuck, and as for potholes, when will the city fix the "Welcome to Kansas City" crater on eastbound 75th at State Line?

Like this place but the parking was really bad. Maybe the streetcar extension could have saved them.

  17. Mom and Pops fail all the time anymore. There is no easy fix for it because simply put the Mom and Pops can't complete very easily in today's retail world. Like Tracy I myself brew my own and seldon buy coffee when out. I'd say the coffee fad will fade away in another couple of years when folks wake up and see that they can brew at home coffee as good and most times better than what a lot of places offer folks. Takes a lot of coffee being poured to support a business of that nature. Most coffee places have to make their main volume of money in the mornings to the on the way to work crowds before the table campers as I call them show up just to suck up free wifi at a table for hours on end while sipping down the cheapest brew sold.

Starbucks seems to work and how I am clueless as to why. It isn't all that great of stuff, the prices outrageous in my opinion and some of the coffees that you see a lot of people sucking down have more calories than a normal person should consume in a drink let alone two times a day. Then add one of their so called great breakfast baked goods or snacks and you could easily be hitting close to 1000 calories for what some would call junk food.

But no matter what the business it's Mom and Pop (M&P) places that have built more cities and towns than any big business has. It's the M&P places that have laid the foundation for every town I know of and they are the first to be pushed out when the town gets to big for its own good, hence Kansas City. 12th and Oak could care less about the M&P's of this city all they want is the glory of rubbing elbows with big corporations while handing them the key to the city they didn't do squat to help build.

Large corporations have killed off more M&P places than any other entity in our country. But many cities make it very easy for them to do it and sometimes even back them to do so. And what is sad is how people will flock to spend their money at locations who have been handed tons of tax free goodies from the city that has as well come out of the taxpayers pocket because it's the hip thing to do. Do I support Wal-Mart....hell no. Do I drink Starbucks coffee....once again hell no.

Tracy is right and while we both are in the same age group her and I both are seeing the wonderful things we enjoyed and supported for several decades all being shut down or forced out and replaced with.....honestly.....crap that's what.

  18. Damn. I really loved that coffee shop. Lots of memories at one more cup.

  19. Super Dave, nice virtue signaling.

The M&PS you so fondly speak of aren't willing to keep up with the times. How do they expect to compete when they close at 6pm weeknights, close at noon Saturday and closed all day Sunday? Does good ol' mom and pop have a no hassle return policy? Are they willing to match a competitors price? Do they offer rebates? How big is their selection?

    ReplyDelete
  20. Does anybody really care what this “stupid Dave “ thinks about anything? How do you know that those people are there “hours on end sipping the cheapest brew sold?” You fucking don’t unless you’re there with them, in which case you’re a loser too! Hurry up and die off old geezer, you have nothing to add but ignorance to everything.

  21. Uhhhh…@5:44, you aged out into "Geezerhood" yesterday.
Hadn't you better deal with the situation before its too late?

  22. 5:00 are you really that stupid? It's clear you don't know how a small business runs.

  23. 7:31, Even Super Dave admits they fail.

They don't keep up with the times and the vast majority of consumers aren't patronizing them because of it.
