Kansas City Local Control Reality Check

Roundup and worthwhile analysis of an ongoing issue that continues to arise amid the growing influence of social justice activists who seek independence from any form of Conservative Jeff City influence.

Of course, the issue that everybody overlooks here is that this move is nothing more than an effort to loot the state-controlled pension funds that aren't nearly as safe as most cops would like to believe . . . Checkit:

Kansas City Controls Its Police Department

For eight years Kansas City was served by a mayor who didn't seem to understand his role in overseeing the Kansas City Police Department. But as has been argued in this space previously, the mayor not only serves on the Board of Police Commissioners, he controls the police department's budget.

  3. When an issue didn't interest Sly, he would claim that he was just one of 13 members of the council. A pitiful helpless "weak" mayor.
When issues like street maintenance or murders became important to the public, Sly would remind everyone that KCMO had a city manager form of government, and that only others could address those issues.
But when Sly wanted streetcars, and tax subsidies, and million dollar arts festivals, and GOP conventions, and all the rest of the rah rah hype crap that he thought increased his celebrity, he somehow became a whirling dervish of intimidation and threat.
    To govern is to choose.
The folks at 12th and Oak choose to continue to be willfully ignorant of the causes and perpetrators of violence and homicides in their city and the carnage continues.
    It never changes.

  4. Police Commissioners elected by the public with term limits are a better idea.

  5. KC voters who haven't voted with their feet will never elect honest competent leaders. When KCMO eventually goes bankrupt the state will probably have to assume control of the entire city.

  6. ^^And yet it will never go bankrupt. Weird.

  7. It’s never going to happen. The police department answers to no one. Kansas City is too lazy to change local control.

  10. Police commissioners are appointed by the Governor, except for the mayor who is automatic. I have said for years that we have local control because we govern the purse strings.
