KANSAS CITY FRIDAY NIGHT QUESTION: WILL WEED FORGIVENESS HELP MAYOR QUINTON LUCAS FIGHT CRIME OR EMBOLDEN LOCAL DRUG DEALERS?!?!

Whilst the rest of this town has a good time, our most dedicated news readers consider upcoming stoner public policy.

Here's the KCMO plan for restorative weed justice . . .

Fox4: New KC mayor still plans to pardon potentially thousands of marijuana convictions

Deets:

Mayor Quinton Lucas has pledged to pardon people previously convicted of stand alone marijuana possession municipal ordinance violations.

"To say that somebody was 18, 10 years ago, had a small joint, ended up with a ticket, it was an ordinance violation, and they have to live with that stigma, I think it's ridiculous and I look forward to making that change soon," Lucas said.

Lucas could also pardon people still working there way through the court system.

In 2017, Kansas City voters approved a ballot initiative reducing the maximum penalty for having less than 35 grams of marijuana to $25 with no possible jail time, but it's still a drug conviction.

As Jackson County Prosecutor's Office announced they'd no longer prosecute minor marijuana cases, Municipal Court charges have decreased, but are still happening. In fact including warrants there's nearly 3,000 pending municipal court marijuana cases.

And so we ask . . .

WILL KANSAS CITY WEED DECRIMINALIZATION HELP PACIFY LOCAL STREETS OR MERELY ENCOURAGE STONERS TO STEP UP THEIR GAME?!?!

You decide . . .

  1. The supply is so plentiful already. It's unlikely many will notice one way or another.

    1. Police supported Quinton Lucas for office so they must have known this would happen. Actually, if marijuana was truly decriminalized in KC, the windfall in revenue to local government could pay to make real improvements and not just tax breaks to developers.

  4. The whole legal marijuana gig will become just another issue that KCMO government handles poorly and totally loses control of.
Look at how well bar and other small business licenses and issues are handled already.
And, yes, licenses will be issued by the state.
But the locals will be stuck with the results.
    Good luck!

  5. A lot of marijuana distribution charges are plead down to mere possession. Will those be included in Lucas's pardon? If so, and I expect it is so, he will be exonerating pushers as well as users.

  7. And this is one of his top priorities? I guess we all know where that leaves the good honest hardworking taxpayers. Bottom of the list is where.

  8. Lucas said that he would be different than former Mayor Sly James in that he’s going to focus on nuts and bolts rather than big and bold projects like the airport and the downtown convention hotel.

And Lucas told The Pitch that as mayor, he doesn’t plan on raising taxes to reach any of his goals in office.

  10. I once had a job years ago with DEA contractor spraying paraquat on pot fields. The harvesters would then quickly harvest it before it would die. They would then sell the weed with paraquat on it to people who had no idea it was a dangerous chemical like "Roundup". I always wonder if that cause the huge outbreak of autism amoung the former pot smokers having kids. it was a really deadly chemical

  11. PARAQUAT & 2,4-D – INFO
Upon exposure, paraquat can adversely affect the proper brain development of children. Meanwhile, 2,4-D was one of the two different active herbicide ingredients in Agent Orange, used extensively by the United States in Vietnam during the war from 1961 to 1971,

  15. 6:47 - Well a ton of tax money is supposed to go for improvemnet, but the money disappears...hmmm Dope cash in Kansas city wont be like the money Denver Made off weed, who put that money into infrastructure, and made the city debt free. Kansas City will never have any money to do shit with as long as we have a corrupt city government and corrupt city services such as KCPD and KCFD, and the Unions who represent those city services.

  16. 8:17, does than mean KCPD will actually enforce the ordanance of panhandling being illegal? I hate catching a red light but what I hate more is catching a red light where someone is begging for money! In KC that is at a shit ton of red lights!!

  17. No sane person believes that anyone should be imprisoned -- or even suffer the disadvantage of a criminal record -- over pot. Period.

(Except, of course, those feasting on the Drug War trough.)

Frankly, it is absurd that we do this silly dance over decriminalization -- medical limits, licensing, etc -- over a drug that has never been shown to be more dangerous than Advil or Tylenol. The government should simply bug out -- or limit regulation to the same level as beer.

  18. I agree with Phil but I have to say I notice a lot of litter from low class weed smokers e.g. every single time they litter the blunt wrapper, plus fast food litter.

Radish is a proud graduate of the 90s dorm room bong team but we weren’t like these low class gang bangers who litter ...

Smoking weed isn’t bad enough to deserve jail but it’s not a virtue either. Just sayin

    Thanks,
    Radish
