After a horrific deadly shooting, the festivities are moving back inside and the event is dramatically scaled down . . .
The basics:
Following the deadly shooting of a 25-year-old bystander in August. Crossroads Community Association leaders said Friday that the next event on Sept. 6 will not include food trucks, art vendors or performers on streets and sidewalks “due to the loss of general liability insurance and the inability to obtain new coverage in time.” As a result, no streets will be closed for the event. Crossroads galleries, studio spaces, restaurants and some businesses will be open as usual on Sept. 6. "This family friendly monthly celebration will continue in earnest and will be focused on the business entities which call the Crossroads home," the Crossroads Community Association Board of Directors said in a news release.
The insurance complaint is pretty substantial and the changes are pretty drastic.
Check the links:
Crossroads Community Association Board of Directors: Changes Planned for September First Friday
KSHB: No food trucks, street closures at next First Friday following deadly shooting
KMBC: Crossroads galleries, studio spaces, restaurants and some businesses will be open as usual on Sept. 6.
So we ask . . .
GIVEN THAT NOBODY WANTS TO LOOK AT ART: IS THIS END FOR FOR FIRST FRIDAY?!?
It was fun while it lasted and nearby residents seem to endorse the move as the party was, obviously, getting out of control and an innocent white broad had to die before they made changes.
You decide . . .
It was over two years ago. They just forget to tell the hipsters.
ReplyDeleteGood call! ^^
DeleteLong overdue. Only agree with one thing about this post. It's a shame that somebody had to die before they made changes.
DeleteThe colder months are actually the best time for the event. A shame that insurance backed out. But sharing that info was probably essential because now you won't get people screaming racism.
ReplyDeletewho am I kidding, you'll still get people screaming about racism!
So I guess there's no need for the stretcar extension.
ReplyDeleteWelcome to Sly's Killa' Shitty! The Momentum!
ReplyDeleteTHANK YOU AFRICAN AMERICANS FOR RUINING ONE OF THE ONLY DECENT CIVIC EVENTS WE HAVE
ReplyDeleteWhat a disappointment. Definitely an overreaction but if you can't get insurance. No party. Sorry.
ReplyDeleteCan’t we just keep the negroes away from the Crossroads? Nobody wants them there.
ReplyDeleteWhat did you expect was going to happen. At it's peak it had more than 20,000 people there and very little security. You can blame the "yutes" all you want but the blood is on the hands of organizers who were irresponsible and haphazard in their planning.
ReplyDelete^^^^ Please don't blame the victim.
ReplyDeleteThis is a good move. In the long run it will save the Crossorads.
ReplyDeleteThis is what our former Community-Organizer-in-Chief meant when he told his people that even one person can make a difference. Only with hood rats it is a negative difference.
ReplyDeleteToo bad. I agree with the one comment that said this was one of the best KC events. Too bad we can't find a way for it to continue.
ReplyDeleteToday the thugs won.
ReplyDeleteWhat a bunch of whiners you all are. Also, I totally disagree with the premise here.
ReplyDeleteKC LOVES art and this is a way to make the event even better. People who are actually there to enjoy local businesses and maybe buy something. Not just those who want to loiter.
The Crossroads had to do this and this is one of the best things that could have happened in order to move forward after a tragedy. The negativity here is just awful. It's Sunny outside. You definitely need to lighten up.
Fucking whiners, complaining about endemic and worsening black violence, why don't they grow up and get nose rings and wear Chatlie Hustle T shirts!
Delete^^^^ +1
ReplyDeleteTime to move it to Leawood. Let's get the party started!
ReplyDeleteLived near the Crossroads for more than 20 years. I can absolutely tell you that this is for the best and most of the residents have been asking for more police control and earlier closing times. First Friday stopped being about art years ago. It turned into a car show and a circus that had nothing to do with why people should come to KC. I'm sad that someone was killed and the changes should have been made far sooner.
ReplyDelete#Rip KC. It was fun while it lasted.
ReplyDelete^^^^ Dumbass.
ReplyDeleteToo little, too late. They should have made the changes before that poor woman was killed.
ReplyDelete+1000 ^^
ReplyDeleteI'm sure there is a correlation between the number of taco trucks and thug shootings. Kudos to our wise city leaders for finding it!
ReplyDeleteIf you want to die on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday then visit KCMO. Planf your funeral for the following Friday, Saturday or Sunday. Graveyards are filled with corpses of people murdered in KCMO ever since the 1930. The number are "hidden". But just stop and think of the thousand of dead people who were just minding they own business in KCMO and a bad person killed em!
ReplyDeleteI bet they would have held on to their insurance if CCW security were allowed and encouraged.
ReplyDeleteWas okay a long time ago but turned into a scene where you go to hang with the KC Visigoths, all tatted up and armed to the teeth, moiling angrily while waiting in line at the burrito trucks.
ReplyDeletePeople saying this is the for the best don't remember KC in the 70s, 80s, and 90s and how dead and shitty this city was.
ReplyDeleteImagine unironically believing making it smaller is a good thing in anyway. Big crowds are good for cities. It's how they thrive. Having it once a month was huge for this city in ways you guys will never understand. People from out of town would come for it, regionally. The only new businesses downtown are restaurants, bars, and coffee shops. They need big crowds to survive since actual businesses aren't moving downtown in any measurable numbers.
Yes it sucks really bad an innocent girl was shot and it's one of the biggest tragedies our city has had over the last year but restraining the organic movement and growth of first friday is horrible as well. The aren't scene in KC is okay, but not good enough to sustain the event, which is why FF became what it is. Seems like the failed artists are the ones cheering this new measure. Get more police down there but don't try to limit what kc has organically come together to create once a month.
Anyway, i can't wait for the KC star editorial praising how good this new policy will be, but i can also count on two fingers the amount of times the KC star editorial board has been right about something. Sad day for our city
Go to any major city and they have events just as big as this. Shit, Austin closes down 6th street three nights a week, EVERY week and it's more chaotic than FF ever were but they have a police presence.
ReplyDeleteKansas Citians want to act like they're oh la la metropolitan and this is a REAL CITY (we have a streetcar!) until it comes time to actually be a real city
4:12 today the murderous blacks won, they ruined everything, we can’t have anything nice in this town without them ruining everything.
ReplyDeletePetersucker has as much blame too though, she’s allowed these murderous bastards to roam freely without any threat of serious punishment. If only she and the blacks were nevar born.....
The murderous blacks- 100
The law abiding citizens- 0
Nationalize the insurance industry
ReplyDelete^^^ That's really the only way we can make sure things are equitable! The illegals will vote for it surely.
DeleteVery cool another KCPD fail.
ReplyDelete4:54 PM You sound like you were born in 1990.
ReplyDeleteNo problem. Now just raise the rents to keep the riff raff out and we'll be rolling in the dough.
ReplyDeleteThis is what happens when you have a bunch of idiots trying to turn everything into a playground for Kidults.
ReplyDeleteI think it’s a good move from a safety standpoint in the sad wake of the young lady’s murder, as well as for the gallery owners there. Who wants to have an open house only to be used as a restroom pit stop for the great unwashed that have no interest in purchasing anything more than booze and a food truck taco?
ReplyDeleteWhite broad...nice. Well, I guess a black thug had to ruin it.
ReplyDeleteIf @4:54 thinks this City was "dead and shitty" in the 70s. 80s and 90s; he must not have gotten out of Mommy's basement very often.
ReplyDeleteThe nightlife back then puts today's puny little attempts to shame! City Market, Westport, Plaza, any of those on a mid-weeknight had more going on than the busiest night the P&L District has ever seen.
Actually that's 100% correct. Feel sorry for those who think P&L district is real night life
DeleteCorrect KC was fun n safe back then. Too bad today's youth dont k ow how good it could be....
ReplyDeleteAlso....they do ruin everything.
Cowtown.
ReplyDelete^^^ I feel sorry for the citizens who live here and think this a great place to live. For 100 this year it was a great place to die. The government here is corrupt, and you tax payers keep taking it in the ass because you live in your 9-5 bubble and dont a shit enough to hold your city leaders accountable for the failures in your shit city! What you see is what you will get and it will only get worse.
ReplyDeleteI think this is a shining example of how events in Kansas City are going to start facing issues in getting insurance coverage due to the amount of violence taking place at such events and the public streets in this town and surrounding area. Face it, when an insurance company gives you coverage they are hoping you never ever file a claim. No law says an insurance company has to give you coverage for anything and they have the power to make you pay what they want if you're a huge risk.
ReplyDeleteThug life is taking over Kansas City in more ways than most folks think and this is a shining example of how they can ruin it for all. I mean come on if you are the head of an insurance company who handled liability coverage for events such as First Fridays would you be all excited about sticking your neck out over the chopping block to write liability coverage for such events in Kansas City? Nope you would not!
Sly James... His motto was, "KC You are on a Roll"
ReplyDeleteWhat a con artist. Sly had one motive and that was to create a City funded employment agency with no responsibility for the outcomes of their work.
