Video captures car striking bicyclist in Overland Park
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - There were no winners Sunday morning in Overland Park when a car struck a bicyclist. Video of the incident shows two bicyclists heading northbound on a sidewalk adjacent to Metcalf Avenue at 137th Street when a car looking to make a right-hand turn onto Metcalf enters the crosswalk, striking one of the cyclists.
"The driver was also cited for entering the crosswalk." How was he going to be able to make a right turn without entering the crosswalk? It's a crossWALK, not a crossBIKE.

ReplyDeleteBikers are causing a lot of trouble on the roads. You can't turn right without the chance of hitting a biker. The bike lane on Armour is the most dangerous.
Bikers should stay off the roads. Ride on trails. Even a tiny car will flatten a bike and kill the rider.
ReplyDeleteParks and trails galore, but these pains in the ass have to infest sidewalks and city streets. I’m especially annoyed by the groups or clubs that ride together- very dangerous.
ReplyDeleteI have viewed the clip and I believe the car driver to be the one wrong here. I have personally taught three sons and over three hundred employees how to drive correctly as part of my career. The car driver did not exercise sufficient caution when he wad approaching the intersection. When the pick up truck was there, stopped, waiting for traffic or pedestrians that should have alerted the car driver to use extreme caution and he failed to do so.
ReplyDeleteI have personally on this site railed against bike lanes, bike clubs and the street car and Armour Boulevard but the law is clear, pedestrians (which bicyclists are ) have the right of way in every situation. I am really glad the cyclist was not seriously injured.
You're seriously going to put the p/u truck at some sort of fault here? He's stopped at a red light, on the stop bar. Was he supposed to jump on his PA and tell the car to watch out? Here's a hint, just 'cause its a truck doesn't mean it has a CB in it. In fact, most people who drive trucks, for certain in OP, don't even use them as trucks. Mostly they're status symbols for the Joneses.

ReplyDeleteYou can mandate bike lanes everywhere but you can't escape reality and that reality is that the United States will NEVER be conducive to bike riders. Whether it's the driver's fault or not it needs to be realized that bikers need to know the danger they're in when going out on the street. Yes, even if it's victim blaming. Riding a bike in south overland park is as risky as walking down prospect at 2am
