Immigrant Biz Built Kansas City

Mexicans, Italians & Swiss merchant history documented by the very best blogger in Kansas City offering a glimpse at old school advertising and elegant souvenirs for a more civilized age.

Take a look:

Matchless city: The neighborhood grocer

From a collection of hundreds of American matchbook covers dating to the late 1940s, I've culled a number of examples from Kansas City to present here. They offer a tiny sliver of that midcentury town as it was about to turn 100 years old in 1950.

  1. Damb near all of the immigrants that built this city were here legally and wanted to speak English.

  3. ^^^ Don't know, but in 1965 (or maybe 66, can't remember) it cost $4 at The Hole In The Floor.

Old Northeast has dozens of examples of these, build a Corner Grocery with an apartment upstairs, live there until you could afford to build a house nearby, then rent the Apartment out to friends or relatives.

EXACTLY like what is going on there now with more recent immigrants!

By the way, those dirty "Wops" and "Spicks" didn't always speak very good English, not like the "Bogtrotters" and "Dutchies" that built this Country.

We'd be a lot better off if all those damned Irish and Germans had been sent back where they came from, heck, some of them weren't even Baptists.

  5. 6:13: Are you aware immigration was pretty much unregulated (except for Chinese) until 1924?

    Didn't think so.

    ReplyDelete
  6. 8:31, are you aware that while there were no specific immigration limits prior to 1924, regulations prohibited entry by persons who were feeble minded, diseased, criminals or would not be able to support themselves?

  7. ^^Nah, because I have a life and don't spend all day vomiting hate on a blog for dying geriatrics. You don't. This is what you do. You failed.

  13. ^^Umm... no. Sorry retard. This is you. Try again chump.

Geriatric: an old person, especially one receiving special care.
