Here's How KC Pet Project Can Get Out Of Paying City Hall EIGHT MILLION BUCKS!!!

Quick background . . . A few years ago KC Pet Project encouraged locals to support GO Bonds and said they would help to raise $8-MILLION BUCKS to help privately finance a new animal shelter. Credit where it's due, they claim to have $206K but now report that they only owe about a million bucks.

Now, if they fire all of the old, mostly minority dog catchers and take over KCMO Animal Control . . . They'll likely be forgiven any debt and THIS is why being a middle-class white lady supporting a good cause is the most powerful thing in the world because anybody else would be in jail or discovered in a car trunk if they owed that kind of cash but never paid up.

KC should get out of the animal control business, and here's who should take over

Teresa Johnson, CEO of KC Pet Project, gave a tour of the Kansas City Animal Shelter on Raytown Road in March 2017. Since then, KC has moved forward with building a new animal shelter in Swope Park.

    1. Or maybe exterminate the shitbags who have given the dogs a bad name by over breeding them and raising them to fight

  2. Enough with the pitbulls ! My husband and I would like to adopt a new dog but all they have there is pitbulls. Like 90% pitbulls. Most people's homeowners insurance won't cover them and we're not taking the risk.

  4. 6:31 is exactly right. That's all that seems to be available. Most people don't want to risk having anything to do with that breed even though we're told by KCPP and other groups there's nothing to worry about. Staying on topic...I like animals and do not like to see them abandoned or mistreated in any way, but honestly there is a laundry list of other issues our city needs to address, all affecting human needs and quality of life. I'm sure I'll get slammed but I'm more concerned with making sure our citizens have appropriate housing, our kids are fed, and are safe in their own homes.

  5. ^^and just what exactly are YOU doing to "ensure our citizens have appropriate housing"??? Oh, I get it, you're coming here to post. Good job! You're making a difference!

  6. KCPP is getting bitch-slapped around for not picking up the slack of the City and County. Having said that, I want to slap people and organizations that demand and trumpet the "no-kill" designation.

Just last week KCPP took to FB to show another dramatic (in quantity) rescue of multiple animals. They need fosters and money. One guy asked in a post how they (and other shelters) have room for these high-profile rescues but when he found a stray he was turned away by multiple shelters...no room at the inn...and treated like crap for attempting to do the right thing.

Citizens and their poor choices cause pet overpopulation. The citizens should be paying their cities/counties to operate shelters with tax dollars while demanding that they be run properly, efficiently (I know, government/efficient, lolz), cleanly and friendly for animals and citizens alike.

Strays found by citizens who can't keep them or re-home them need a place to humanely leave them. "No-kill" facilities that turn people away are sentencing these strays to death. It just won't be done humanely. It will be a long slow slog of starvation, weather extremes and terror. Like it or not, the three-legged blind diabetic lovable dog that's been in the shelter for seven years with no takers needs a humane medical send off to make room for the stray puppy that will almost assuredly be spending little time there.

  7. @6:31am If you re serious about adopting a dog take a look at Always & Forever Midwest Animal Sanctuary. They are out in Spring Hill, KS, and take in and find homes for mostly senior dogs of all breeds. I just adopted a little 12 year old toy fox terrier from them. Check out their FB page and on petfinder.com to see what dogs are up for adoption. They are not all pitbulls.

  8. Pet project seems like it has turned into a scam. The new leadership has turned it into public private partnership that's political.

  9. We have to come up with a better solution. not all dogs & cats can be placed into homes. Euthenizing animals humanely isn't such a horrible thing. We should treat animals with care.

  12. KCPP, Roshann Parris and Kristi Wyatt should be ashamed of themselves. It wasn’t eight million they were supposed to raise, it was $10 million. They insisted the shelter be built on the land in Swope Park where the disc golf course already was, causing the relocation of the course at great expense. They claimed multi-millionaire Cliff Illig would back up the money if KCPP couldn’t raise it (not true). They demanded a palatial animal shelter that is nicer than a hell of a lot of homes in KCMO. It’s going to cost $30 million before it’s all said and done and that’s before operating costs which the City will no doubt end up paying.
No-kill shelters are not humane. The animals that get turned away are left to die a slow cruel death. Meanwhile the KCPP folks get to be the pet Nazis, shaming you if you don’t treat your fur babies as your child. Animals are great but they are not humans. And Ms. Parris, Ms. Wyatt, (both JoCo gals) and KCPP have fleeced the City for their love of a fur baby palace.

  13. Wow, did this article seem like a one-sided hit job or is it just me? I know for a fact the city has done everything the now two year old audit asked them to do. That small detail is missing. The people out there at animal control do public out reach and education without KCPP or their support. I've seen them take dog houses to people who can't afford them, they offer alternatives to taking the animal to KCPP, they help directly with helping people find resources they need. They seem to try to help people more than most city employees. The reporter got a short quote from the supervisor, did he talk to the field hands? The people who are out there trying to clean up this city's animal mess everyday and then have to deal with the elitist at KCPP? I'm thinking not.
