TKC REALITY CHECK!!! MANY KANSAS CITY EASTSIDERS REGRET LEON'S MARKET SHUT DOWN AMID SUNFRESH SUBSIDY!!!
Full disclosure, my grandma and I shopped at Leon's for years and our always leans toward Indie biz.
Nevertheless . . .
A popular social media discussion offers an ALTERNATIVE view of the urban core discourse beyond the political talking points pushed by City Hall. Recently, many KCMO East side residents expressed their disdain for local biz subsidy as local leaders looked on while a longtime local biz closed up shop.
A paraphrase from community activist and former council candidate Rachel Riley's recent social media comments:
'How in the HECK do we bail out Sunfresh with $375,000 of taxpayer's money??? And Leon's Market, which fed the community for 50 years . . . Goes under.'
The closure of Leon's strikes many as FAILURE of the political & biz community considering how many politicos were happy to use the place as part of their campaign platform just a few months ago.
Meanwhile, the Sunfresh struggles to control violence, shoplifting and consumer complaints from neighbors about treatment within the store.
Developing . . .
City hall doesn't represent the east side or the inner city. They only represent themselves.
ReplyDeleteA lot of the reports show us that Leon's didn't really want help from the city to stay open. Smart man.
DeleteCity hall forces welfare, it's the only way they can keep critics in line. Smart people from KC know this. Looked at rachel's posts. She has some good points but she thinks taxpayer funding is the answer. it's not. Better leadership at city hall that prioritized public safety for all parts of the community would be more valuable.
DeleteThey’re mad because a white store owner is getting money to run a store in the hood, they be wantin da monies fo they selves, Escalades aren’t cheap people.
ReplyDeleteIt was easier to shoplift at Leon's.
ReplyDeleteThe millions spent up front and the hundreds of thousands thrown away recently are just the beginning of endless subsidies for this losing proposition.
ReplyDeleteJust like 18th and Vine.
No "community" "deserves" a grocery store propped up by tax dollars.
Especially when the behavior and lack of personal responsibility of members of that same community make it impossible for a business to stay afloat financially.
There are very good reasons why there is so little private investment in the urban core.
And those reasons are what should be addressed and improved, not playing make-believe with the public's money.
Let's being back Citadel Plaza!
It never changes.

With some exceptions, poisonous, violent parasites who murder, rape and kill at a outrageously disproportionate rate and are excused by the Main Stream Media and Democrats because they need "The Vote".
We all suffer under the suzerainty of an increasing demographic change which will bring the same results as we are now seeing in the post Mandela South Africa. Here in the US, we see it in Liberal cities where the Rule Of Law has given way, to the soup de jour "feelings" of current "Talking Points" diffused into the zeitgeist.
Whats worse than the violence inflicted on citizenry by blacks is the insistence that we all pretend it doesn't exist and that when it does, it is "Whitey's" fault.
We are dead, in black on white hate crimes that no one remembers.
^^and yet we are not. Weird.
ReplyDeletenow if you steal at the new Liparis on 31 st st, they are Italian and we KNOW what will become of you dont we?
ReplyDeleteMUNICIPAL POLITICO VEGETABLE STATE
ReplyDeleteKCMO owning/subsidizing an unprofitable grocery store? This is what you get when political leadership and the City Manager are operating in a grey-matter desert.
When you FAIL on basic services like public safety, code enforcement, streets, sidewalks, and water, businesses don't want to invest in the area. Then you feel the need to subsidize in order to cover your initial failures. At this point, you're just continually chasing your own tail.
I suppose after you've done something incredibly stupid like the completely subsidized Cordish Power and Light District, followed by multiple Cordish Light towers, it's an indication that you're a mental lost cause. Might as well go for broke (literally) and subsidize a wealthy local engineering company's headquarters expansion, a convention center hotel, a tourist trolley, and an airport terminal.
Hey, before we slide into bankruptcy, let's build a new baseball stadium downtown just for the hell of it! Yes, there's a perfectly fine one where it sits now, but don't you want to impress outsiders?
Sylvester, Schulte, and Council = Ass-Backwards
What’s $ 375,000 it’s only money. We make that much from the P&L District in one day
ReplyDeleteSadly, the P & L is subsidized to the tune of 16 million a year. Like most everything in the Downtown Disneyworld, it loses money.
DeleteThis is a literal example of why liberal programs do more home than good. Cleaver refusing to allow 71 to be part of I-49 is another obvious example that has perpetuated the decline of the eastside. It's too bad the eastside won't go against cleaver because he goes against them every time. But he's a sainted figure around here which is hilarious
ReplyDeleteLets be real here, if you were the Leon's family and city hall was throwing money right and left at your competition would you really be wanting to fight the fight to stay open in the community to serve anyone?
ReplyDelete^^You don't even live in KC, so nothing you have to add is EVER relevant. Go start your own blog dummy.
ReplyDeleteSome one open a apple market there and put sunfresh, out of Business.
ReplyDelete^^^^^10:43 he's been around longer than you I bet so why don't you go away instead.
ReplyDelete^^sorry stupid dave, you're not fooling anyone posting anonymously anymore. As the previous poster mentioned, go away.
ReplyDelete^^Fuck off jack off.
ReplyDelete^^Nah, he can stay. You should probably go. You're boring.
ReplyDeleteWhen will there be a Star investigation of the details of the cost of refinancing the Baltimore Cordish P&L bonds in 2014 as a lead-up to Sly's re-election in 2015? Reportedly fifteen million annual subsidy lowered in 2014 and 2015 to five million dollars. Why? Only apparent reason was to help Sly's re-election in 2015. Reported cost of extending was to extend bond repayment term and increase debt. Was $36 million added to $297 million Cordish P&L debt? Who besides the bond dealers benefited from this ploy?
ReplyDeleteByron told me himself that he can't stand to live by black people and that is why he moved here to WV. There are not many black people living around here for sure. He just bothers you folks around there because he has been banned from all the local groups here plus kicked out of the chess clubs and Facebook banned him years ago. He has no friends and frankly I think you all can see why.
ReplyDeleteAaww, the widdle tot @11:14/11:47 is twiggud and needs to crawl back to his safespace.
ReplyDeletePrevious poster? YOU are not fooling anyone.
^^who are you talking too?? Nobody cares dude! Are you a retard?
