New Downtown Royals Stadium Would Cost City a King's Ransom

  2. A downtown stadium would kill baseball and football in KC as most people would not go to it. Parking and crime surrounding the location between the crossroads and the Vine district will not change. I am not going to KCMO to get shot or have my car vandalized or stolen and I have not and will not ride the stupid streetcar.

  3. ^^except most people would in fact, go to it. Weird.

  7. The problem with is that it's going to need yet another tax increase. Building one of both stadiums downtown is going to cost well over a billion dollars. Maybe even north of 2 billion. The Hunts and Glass families, if history holds true, are only going to pitch in a small percentage of that cost. The rest will be on the city, county and state. Can we afford another tax increase after the GO-Bond tax increase, the East side Eco-Devo tax increase, the MCPL tax increase, the Buck O'Neill Bridge tax increase, the zoo tax increase, etc, etc, etc...?

Look, I want a downtown stadium/stadiums as much as anyone. It's a sexy idea that would put a lot of shine on our city. I don't think the location of the current stadium is optimal in terms of appeal and such. The location of the current stadiums is only ideal because of the limitless parking available (to which the Royals and Chiefs make a small fortune off of at our expense as WE pay for the maintenance of those stadiums yet they collect the money from parking fees....but I digress). But the fact of the matter is that this city is already over-taxed as it is. Now we're going to do another tax to build a couple of palaces for the Royals and Chiefs? Again, I want to see downtown ball too but the ask may be too great in terms of taxing of the working class to do it.

The Royals and Chiefs have enjoyed sweetheart deals for decades on the tax payer's dime. It'd be great if they took care of this themselves. The small amount of rent they pay pales in comparison to the costs the city, county and state face to cover maintenance and such.

Again, I think everyone would love to see the Royals and Chiefs move from the TSC to downtown. I just don't think it makes any sense for tax payers despite all the supposed jobs it would create (most of which would be temp jobs and the rest would be low wage).

  8. The City and County will be Bankrupt in a few years. Why do you think they continue raising taxes. And Kansas City will be a ghost town in about ten years .THE Communists will take over WASHINGTON .AND you will be Taxed at fifty percent. And that is the poor and middle class. No money for entertainment .After all the taxes are taken. The will be buying food and paying utilities and trying to keep a roof over there head. Oh yes there Debt. They will be slaves to the NEW WORLD ORDER .

  10. A downtown baseball stadium would do wonders for this city and get a TON of people who don't normally go to games out there. The stadium would bring the sort of development bullshit like the streetcar promises. I have a lot of friends who live and work downtown with no car and have never been to a Royals game because why would someone with little interest drive through the scrapyards of independence to see a baseball game. They'd definitely go if it were in walking distance. There are 81 home dates in baseball and that's a lot of money for restaurants. Parking isn't an issue.

Arrowhead should stay where it's at. Downtown football stadiums with only 8 games a year don't make sense and ruins the culture of football. That's the problem though. This city can't mentally separate the baseball and football stadiums because they've been so close in proximity to each other. No other city has this problem because their stadiums are in different parts of the city

    1. Sure, I am on board if it paid for completely by the Royals team. No taxpayer handout or false promises. The Sprint Center ring a bell? P&L?

Oh, and making sure the nice, revamped stadium aka Kauffman the taxpayers have been paying for isn't allowed to sit and rot.

  12. @10:45, while I agree with you in terms of there being 81 games of baseball downtown, which would, subsequently, increase downtown population to some degree and, subsequently, potentially bring more business/money downtown, at what cost? We're talking potentially a billion dollars of borrowing and spending just for a downtown baseball stadium. Is that tax burden on an already struggling working class really worth it and smart fiscal policy?

I've argued for years that the problem with the P&L (despite the shitty deal the city made with Cordish that screws over tax payers for many years to come) is that there is really not much of an engine to draw people from outside of the metro area to downtown KC. The P&L really needed and still does need an anchor tenant. Since both the Sprint Center and P&L are already here (with the P&L not covering the debt on the bonds sold to build it) that's what's needed. A baseball stadium could potentially help that specific issue but it creates a massive different one. Raising taxes on an already overly taxed populace to fund the dang thing. To me that's not good, sound fiscal policy. In fact, that's just about akin to throwing good money after bad. Simply put, we'd be incurring a massive amount of debt for the new stadium only to MAYBE help the debt at the P&L.

The Tax, Borrow and Spend culture of this city is out of control. We were told that the street car was the final piece to driving Eco-Devo downtown. Then we were told the Loews hotel was, etc. If the baseball stadium gets built, we'll need more hotel and convention space funded by tax payers. It never ends. And the tax payers suffer.

And "El Weirdo", better post faster, there's only six hours left before the Library closes and you have to find a place to sleep tonight.

  15. Yet something else actual taxpaying residents don’t need or want. Let out of towners build stadiums in their own towns. I’m sick of these folks coming in from God knows where - hogtying our politicians and convincing them that we need shit like this. It worked so well for the St. Louis Rams... **eyeroll** If people want to live like their in another part of the country... my suggestion is to move where that particular amenity is and stop trying to turn our small town into an even shittier place to live. Seattle has lots of unaffordable bullshit that White people can bump their chest at as having paid for. Kansas City proper doesn’t need or want for more of this type of thing...

  16. Louie Wright (Ex IAFF Prez) once said it might not be broken, but its like a old computer it might still work, but its behind the times. I say We have a stadium that games are played and it works, its been updated and is far from behind the times and we USED to have a ambulance service that actually cared about its citizens and provided top notch medical care for the citizens of KC. Louie Wright was a politician, he worked hard and ruined EMS in KCMO, so any politician that thinks moving baseball and football downtown, will let you down in everyway trying to get you to vote to do so!! If its not broke, dont go broke as a KCMO tax payer beliving anything the politician idiots have to say, their agenda is for themself and their moneymaking business partners NOT YOU THE TAX PAYER!!!
