NO PROGRESS ON JACKSON COUNTY BOE TAX ASSESSMENT PROPOSAL AS PROTESTERS MARCH ON COURTHOUSE!!!

The "news" is that the debate continues as local media witnessed rising homeowner angst against a broken process that has changed political fortunes and sparked debate but has yet to offer any advancement toward a solution.

The recap . . .

The Jackson County Board of Equalization on Thursday tabled a proposal to cap property assessment increases. The board says it needs more information.

Board member Preston Smith is asking the board to reduce assessed value increases to 14 percent on properties that received more than a 200 percent hike.

This would not affect any property with an assessed value increase of less than 12 percent. Those values would stay the same.

"Basically what we have now is a train wreck," Preston Smith said. "We are a total disaster. We have areas clearly favored above other areas in taxation. It’s based on factors of race and poverty. These are people who’d be a lot less likely to make appeals. The people who would be likely to make appeals, they avoided raising taxes in those areas."

It gets worse . . .

THERE'S NOW A 10-DAY DEADLINE TO CHALLENGE THE PROPERTY TAX ASSESSMENT THAT JACKSON COUNTY HAS FLUBBED OVER THE PAST TWO YEARS!!!

And so, it's likely we're on the way to another showdown . . .

On the other side . . .

Jackson County Executive issues statement after BOE meeting

“The Board of Equalization took the appropriate step today by requesting additional information regarding the impact of the proposal before them. The Board has every right to be fully informed and the County looks forward to providing members with information from the assessment department to ensure that happens.

“From the beginning, I have said the County is committed to ensuring that the assessment process is both fair and accurate. We remain actively engaged in that process as the assessment department continues to work with property owners to process informal reviews and today, the BOE began hearing formal appeals. The assessment process is long, but it is in place to ensure that property owners are heard and that corrections, when appropriate, are made. The deadline to file a BOE appeal is Monday, July 29.”

  1. Only two real solutions here: Move or sign a recall against Frank White.

    1. ^^^ Recall won't work. It would be better to reach out toward the Missouri State Tax Commission to stop this process that is obviously working against poor people.

  2. Favorite protest sign of the day: Frank White tries to steal home again!

    That's just clever.

  4. ^^^^ wait game, Preston is the only guy who has a plan. The rest of the board is just content to watch the nightmare go forward.

    1. Democrats, they are the same everywhere in whatever city they run. They will destroy cities then proceed to blame conservatives. Idiots keep voting for them.

    2. Very true. Democrats tax and spend out of control, run good cities into the ground, hurt the poor and working class, then blame everything bad on conservatives. They act like they don't understand when a program or process is broken, wasting more taxpayer dollars on it won't help. It is unbelievable that the idiots keep voting for the democrats, when the conservatives are the only ones that really care about them and trying to help all people.

  7. Frank White needs to go. Eliminate the damn county executive position while you're at it. Let me vote for assessor and collector!!!!!!!

  8. Anytime I hear a politician talk about the media not reporting accurately or screaming about fake news my guess is they're trying to hide something and the media is just getting too close for comfort. Kudos to KCTV5 and the Northeast News for their detaiked reporting on this. Puts the Star to shame.

  10. While the usual marching around and shouting goes on and White and the clueless legislators, who are actually responsible to providing oversight for the property assessment process make excuses, look the other way, and sit on their hands, Preston Smith has actually made a serious helpful proposal.
Maye he's the kind of person who should run for office and get elected instead of the same tired old worn down names that appear over and over again and hang around for years.
Apparently in the JaCo government game, experience DOESN'T count.
    What a joke!

  11. Assessor wouldn't answer reporter's tough questions. Meanwhile, Frank's flunkies on the BOE didn't have any questions to ask. What a cluster.

  13. If you don't know what you are talking about, shut up and find out the facts. The boe does not answer to ANY county governement official. It is an independent body and hopefully will attempt to make things right. The 15, 14 , 13 percent proposal is not a legally recognized option. I don't live in your county and I wish you the best, but my suggestion to my friends that do is, file at the boe, if you aren't happy with the outcome, appeal to the state tax commission. It isn't politics, it's reality.

  14. Where's the money going... allegedly umb bank been stock piling county tax payments for decades without a bid on bank to do so.... the county hasn't given a decent raises to the folks on 1st floor who handles tax payments and back office employees... why?

Folks who know what going on allege millions missing that tax payers paid. Some allege money used to fund political campaigns and pay for favors... a decendant of the pendergast family ran that money operation until a few years ago.. so now they want folks to pay more...

Allegedly records reveal some of the big restaurant chains and business pay zero or next o making millions.

Home owners are now asked to pay more.. wow...

  17. So as it appears, the inner City has been getting a break for over a decade, while the other parts of the County have been having their property appraisals increased regularly.

Now that the State has changed the law to require that the appraisal be made to reflect "Market Value", the inner City properties' valuations have to (by law) be brought up to market value all at once.

This makes it seem to be a State, not County action that is causing the increases, which are not a result of "ethnicity", but of "geography"! Blame the former County Legislators for not increasing these inner City appraisal valuations, but "deferring" such increases to curry favor among certain residents.

Unfortunately, this is not an arbitrary action, but the result of yet another betrayal of Inner City Residents by their Political "Leaders".

  18. ^^^^ Shut up Caleb.

  19. 11:01 I think 12:36 is probably right. If not Caleb, you are probably some other Frank Flunky.

The County Legislators have zero power to change assessments. None. Zip. If they did, they'd step in and end this year's painfully incompetent and probably corrupt process.

You want to talk about inner city property values increasing. while Frank's benefactor is still getting an enormous break on his McClain Mansion, assessed at a fourth what it is worth? And we're supposed to just believe Frank when he says it is just a coincidence when so many value increases came in at 14.9% a tenth of a percentage point of what would require a physical inspection?

This would be the same Frank White who swore he didn't owe any taxes and still won't give us the details of his "private" foreclosure bailout?
