Tonight: Kansas City Library Lesson In Resolving The Past

Remembering Emmett Till

Drive through the Mississippi Delta today, and you'll find it dotted with memorials to major figures and events from the civil rights movement. Most chilling, perhaps, are those recalling the 1955 murder of Emmett Till, a tragedy of hate and injustice that became a milestone in the fight for racial equality.

Love and Rockets - So Alive is the #TBT song of the day and this is the OPEN THREAD for right now . . .

  1. Yes, let's all go back to 1955 and wring our hands over this terrible event.
But let's NOT spend any time at all on the horrendous and ongoing murder rate in one part of KCMO.
That would focus a very bright light on a subject that cowardly electeds dare not touch.
Are we certain that all the Confederate statues in KC have been removed?
    Tiresome and irrelevant.

I wonder if poor, innocent Emmett is buried next to his father, Louis. Louis Till raped and murdered an Italian woman in 1945 and was hanged by the US Army that same year.

  4. "Turns out there’s money to be made in struggling communities from luring civil rights tourists."

--- said the white male from KU who's made a living from talking about Emmett Till for 5+ years.

  5. Byron Funkhouser7/11/19, 11:57 AM

8:55 Considering the year, you shouldn't assume he was actually guilty.

  7. Funhouser is fraud. He is a middle aged hack posting from a couple of coffee shops in Raytown.

    That's a fact.

A couple of those hack Raytown lawyers caught him.

  8. 8:05 - So what, we should just forget that young black boy was murdered because he was black and MAYBE whistled at a white woman? Please tell me how blacks get everything handed to them on a platter now.

I don't know about the confederate statues but have all the Nazi memorabilia and statues and symbols been removed from Germany yet? Oh yeah, I forgot, Germany lost and yes, they were removed. Yet, loser Southern Confederate trash think they still get the right to put their bullshit history out on display. It's their heritage, they say, I guess their heritage is wanting to be able to own slaves.

    1. Gosh, you're stupid.

Rather than confront the black on black genocide going on in our cities, or the failure and dysfunction of war-torn 'communities' that bleeds into less broken areas, you want to yet again use this poor kid's murder to somehow perpetuate the toxic perpetual victimhood narrative--untrue on its face, which keeps black people as slaves to the party that favors the myth the most.

And they do get plenty handed to them. In many ways they are the most coddled, excused, sheltered, and privileged race in history.

History isn't bullshit. It happened. Going after Confederate statues doesn't put a single meal on a table, or create generational wealth, or create a single job. It's just another empty, feelgood gesture on the part of moral cowards.

      Like you.

  9. +1000--except I think we should keep the statues to remind ourselves of the bad old days.

  10. 8:42pm hits the nail on the head.
Cherry-picking what history should be destroyed and forgotten, while simultaneously purposefully ignoring the self-inflicted carnage regularly taking place in the black community is the ultimate exercise in amnesia and blame shifting.
Lots of bad things have happened in the past all over the world and this country's history is no exception.
But as 8:42pm said. Decisions and events took place. They are facts which need to be learning exercises, not airbrushed away.
In KCMO year after year, there are over 125 homicides, and in some recent years, as many as 150.
Regularly 90% of both the victims and perpetrators of these murders are black.
These acts are not because of history, statues, or other people.
They are caused by individuals who have no respect for themselves or others, have not taken advantage of a free education, have no work history of holding legitimate jobs, and whose behavior deteriorates to being self-destructive, taking entire neighborhoods down with them.
And society cannot eliminate or even reduce this scourge without leadership and cooperation from the community in which they reside.
    Not history lessons or excuses.
Courageous leadership in the community's own self-preservation.
KCMO is well on its way for yet another year of murders well in excess of 135.
History lessons at the library are unlikely to change that sad fact.
