Kansas City Star Plays Gun Grabber

As for as Op/Ed journalism goes, this is just depressing because it assumes even causal local news readers don't know the basics of state & Constitutional law. There's an ongoing effort to take away 2nd Amendment rights in KCMO and, thankfully, the Missouri GOP Super-Majority in Jeff City has pushed back those efforts. Even worse, think about this issue objectively and notice that it's a mostly white-suburban organization wanting to DISARM LAWFUL GUN-OWNERS in the urban core.

Here's their argument:

As the body count continues to rise, why can't Kansas City write its own gun laws?

Kansas City police officers canvass a neighborhood in an effort to curb celebratory gunfire. Michele Shanahan DeMoss, whose daughter Blair was killed over the Fourth of July holiday in 2011, joined them. Fourteen-year old Damian Norfleet's life ended far too soon when a barrage of bullets fired through a window struck him in the head and chest.

  1. As the body count continues to rise, why is it so hard to acknowledge the unkind truth about violent crime?

  2. The constitution is why KC can't write it's own gun laws. Guessing that's a pretty big reason why

  3. More gun laws are not needed if existing laws were strictly enforced. Chicago has some of the strictest gun laws of anybody and look at their crime rate.

    Making good people helpless
Does not make bad people harmless.

  4. Don't Legislate, ENFORCE!
That's something Kansas City can actually do!

  5. Wow maybe make murder a crime that will stop it

  6. Stop and frisk would put a dent in the problem.

  7. The Missouri Constitution might have something to do with why Kansas City can't go it alone on gun laws:

"Section 23. That the right of every citizen to keep and bear arms, ammunition, and accessories typical to the normal function of such arms, in defense of his home, person, family and property, or when lawfully summoned in aid of the civil power, shall not be questioned. The rights guaranteed by this section shall be unalienable. Any restriction on these rights shall be subject to strict scrutiny and the state of Missouri shall be obligated to uphold these rights and shall under no circumstances decline to protect against their infringement. ..."
