Did Kansas City Fringe Fest FAIL 2019??

We noticed less participation and promotion this year for the annual event. More on this later but for now we'd like to know if our artsy denizens also experienced the creative-class drop off???

  1. Only because I was dining at Pierpont's, I spent 30 minutes in the lobby of Union Stn. enjoying this year's Fringe visual arts exhibit. It was VERY well done, congrats to Sarah Slaughter, who was in charge of that. Even at 9pm, there was a volunteer artist, Michael Thomas, to answer questions or coordinate purchases.

A superior location for the visual arts show, rather than before in the lower level back door lobby by the Fringe offices. Thank you, Union Station!

The show was fun and well organized, even had a black light tent. There were several sculptural 3D pieces my friend and I might still purchase. Prices ranged from $25 to $900 I think. Most under $200, the "magic number" for impulse buying of art.
And hooray for Fringe for showing emerging artists' work.

I met a man and his mother, she visiting from Manhattan, and he enthusiastically discussed which theatre performances and concerts they were seeing. As for me, despite spending hours reading the web site and reviewing the excellent and easier to read program, nothing this year called to me. It was hard to tell which acts were on the national circuit and had travelled here.

The topics and themes this year included many "angry" or downer themes of victimhood and abuse. If I want that, I'll watch CNN or MSNBC. Or rejoin the Democrat party. Which is all victims and rescuers nowadays. Whiners. Not hopefilled moon shot visionaries.

In the past, I have attended up to 13 Fringe performances per year, like a staycation. And our local and sensationally talented actors from Unicorn, UMKC, KCAT, Spinning Tree were all producing events or the first acts of new work. Seemed to be MIA this year.

I did notice in the daily emails, half a dozen featured performers cancelled ere start. Not sure why...

  2. I can answer the cancellation question for you. This is and will always be a failing event. The "organizer" Cheryl Kimmi is a loon. Her entire family is on the board of directors and claim their entire annual "salary" from this. People read the background ever since "Opens Spaces" picked their pockets in KC. That is why artists cancelled before the start of the event. I hope it was an utteer failure.

  3. Fringe Festival once again successful, though not as fat as it has been.

  7. "Art with a message" is almost always really shitty art.
