Just as TKC reported before any other news outlet in town, the activist outrage against a controversial ICE arrest was overwhelming and resonated from KC to the nation's capital.
Because of the decline of legacy media, there were very few popular voices to contradict what was a progressive outpouring of sympathy, anger and promises of reform.
A few things to clear up . . .
- KCPD didn't break the glass. There are plenty of online and social media rumors out there, we want to provide an accurate view of the sitch.
- Can ICE arrest a suspected illegal alien and are they allowed to use force?!?!? Yes and maybe . . . In the course of their duties, ICE agents are entitled to take an alien into custody with or without a warrant—see 8 U.S.C. Sections 1226 and 1357. However, there's A LOT of debate this one . . . An expert notes: "The Fourth Amendment to the Constitution, that individuals—including illegal aliens and aliens under a final order of removal—may be free from "unreasonable" searches and seizures, whether of their property or person. Translated into everyday practice, this means that officers with an arrest warrant, regardless whether it is civil or criminal in nature, may not enter the premises of a wanted person without a search warrant concurrently authorizing them to do so." Again, this is up for debate and there are likely few Constitutional scholars reading this dumb-ass blog.
- Overall, the reaction from the local leaders, politicos and people willing to go on record has been overwhelmingly negative regarding the tactics of ICE used locally.
That's right . . .
THE CONTROVERSIAL ICE ARREST HAS MOBILIZED LOCAL PROGRESSIVE LEADERS TO OPPOSE KCPD COOPERATION WITH ICE!!! MOREOVER, THIS BUST IS PLAYING HORRIBLY IN THE LOCAL MEDIA WITH NO CONSERVATIVE LEADER STEPPING UP TO DEFEND SPRAYING BROKEN GLASS ON BABIES IN ORDER TO NAB A CHEF!!!
Or a "taco dude" as some of the TKC blog readers have tagged him.
Meanwhile, TKC loves a lot of the comments and there have been some great arguments that try to bring reason and perspective to a debate wherein the suspect might be a federal felon repeatedly violating U.S. law and endangering his loved ones in the process . . . But let's be objective and realistic . . . The average person who has seen the "broken glass" clip and witnessed some of the nastier comments isn't swayed by the trolling.
And c'mon, when do the "good guys" ever split up a reasonably happy family in the movies??? Without taking sides, there's no denying the optics. A wise, beloved and probably drunk lady once said:
"The more you tighten your grip, the more star systems will slip through your fingers."
Worse still . . .
WITHOUT A REASONABLE CONSERVATIVE VOICE TO DEFEND ICE IN THE KC MEDIA, THE ALT-RIGHT TROLLING TURNS EVEN MORE PEOPLE AWAY FROM IMMIGRATION ENFORCEMENT!!! MOST OF THE SOCIAL MEDIA RIGHT-WING ARGUMENTS PLAY LIKE HATE SPEECH!!!
Meanwhile, progressives have turned this family tragedy into an opportunity.
Let's not forget that the new Mayor-Elect has a racial justice plan to create a Municipal ID card that could've allowed that dude to go along his merry way, likely bypassing the feds with help from local police.
To wit and considering the "many sides" of this hot mess that has dominated the KCMO news week, now check the litany of local outrage that isn't over by a long-shot as immigration crackdowns will play a HUUUUUGE role in the 2020 election nightmare . . .

Pushback Against La Migra
KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -- A Facebook live video showing ICE agents breaking a car window and pulling Florencio Millan-Vazquez from his car and arresting him in front of his girlfriend and young children, sparked a tweet from congressman Emmanuel Cleaver. This video is very concerning as to the traumatization of children and the reasonable use of force.
Mexican Standoff In KC
KANSAS CITY, MO (AP) - Federal immigration officers trying to arrest a Mexican man who is in the U.S. illegally smashed a car window and dragged him from the vehicle in front of his girlfriend and two young children, prompting condemnation from the woman's Missouri congressman.

LAWRENCE, Kan. - More than a year has passed since Syed Jamal of the Platte County Jail, but seeing of a Kansas City man's arrest this week brought the memories flooding back. "It of course is painful," Jamal, a father and chemistry instructor, said of seeing agents break a car window to take Florencio Millan into custody.
A Facebook video showing an immigration agent in Kansas City smashing the window of a car and dragging out an undocumented immigrant marks a newly aggressive approach by Immigration Customs and Enforcement. It also has provoked community outrage, along with questions about whether the agency complied with the law and the extent to which the Kansas City Police Department is lending assistance to ICE operations.
