WHY IS THE KANSAS CITY STAR COVERING 'CRACK CHICKEN' ARMED ROBBERY AND PLAYING UMKC STUDENT NEWSPAPER ONE YEAR AFTER TRAGIC SLAUGHTER?!?!

The premise of a tragic college student killing story was old news from a year ago and basically concerned some e-mails which caught the city college performing basic crisis management public relations.

Here's one of the most quizzical front pages we've seen from The Star in years . . .

UMKC pushed false narrative after student from India was killed in KC restaurant

"Sharath Koppu, a UMKC student from India, was killed while working at J’s Fish and Chicken Market. UMKC officials claim they were not aware Koppu was working there which would violate his visa status."

It might be a a captivating story but it's not news and it doesn't impact many people around the metro.

What's worse is that the paperwork newsflash glosses over the more important parts of the story like a potential hate crime trend against Indians in KC, rising danger confronting UMKC students AND worsening violence on the East Side.

But here's the question that we're asking our blog community . . .

WHY IS THE KANSAS CITY STAR TARGETING UMKC WITH A STRANGE NUMBER OF HIT PIECES LIKE THEY'RE THE KANGAROO STUDENT NEWSPAPER?!?

We can only hope the professor Kraske is fired in the midst of all of this and UMKC stops letting The Star use KCUR like its retirement supplement pension program.

We agree this is a sad story but the newspaper only discovered that, yes, UMKC has PR which should be obvious and they're entitled to try and "manage" a story in much the same way the administration of Mayor Sly James managed KC dead-tree media effectively over the past 8 years.

Please tell us if we're missing something here because this bit of college journalism isn't even as captivating as a good blog post and seems rather sophomoric.

  1. Actually, you have this the other way around. It's the newspaper that want the KCUR and UMKC resources. That's a big part of the trend to take down the UMKC president.

  2. The UMKC president should be fired. He is from some third world country.

  3. I would not want Steve Kraske teaching my children

  4. On a scale of 1 to 10 in newsworthiness (10 is nigh)... this is a 3.5.

  5. UMKC has some great people working there, but the upper level administrators continue to lie every time there is an issue. Remember the Block School fake award, the Pharmacy professor's indenturement, mold that displaced 600 students and the recent LGBT confrontation of right wing speaker. Time to clean house!

  6. There are too many administrators making too much money and doing too little for the students at all colleges and universities. Want to make college more affordable? Start laying off the dead wood would be a start.

  7. You mean to say that a university administration would lie if the issue were something about money?
    Shocking!

  8. Third rate school run by third rate administrators, particularly Agrawal. Deport that cocksucker back to India or whatever shithole he is from. Also, get rid of all the faggots. UMKC is pathetic.

  10. UMKC is a terrible school. I have two degrees from there and i regret it every day

  11. "but it's not news"

It actually is, little man. Unbunch your panties.

  12. Why is anyone even reading The Star to begin with?

  13. 10:53: And did you expect your MFA to open doors for you?

  14. If the Star were not able to manufacture a daily scandal, two or three pages of the newspaper would be totally blank. The Star does not do enough news reporting to fill them.

  15. All the Star cares about these days is negativity. It's sad, and a wonder why anyone continues to read the publication.

Neither of their two mayoral endorsements survived the primary. If that isn't an indictment on their influence in KC, I don't know what is. They continue to push this narrative of how bad everything in KC is when we are in the middle of - arguably - the best decade in the history of the city. Their reporters, editorial board, etc., don't seem to understand how the world actually works. There was a time when journalism was a noble profession, and a critical community resource. Today, the Star is more concerned with what shops are closing on the Plaza and what Boston fans said on Twitter about Mahomes' appearance at the Blues game in St. Louis. Real important stuff.
