TKC EXCLUSIVE!!! READERS TALK 'SAVE THE PASEO' PETITION WHILST COUNCIL CONFRONT KANSAS CITY POLITICAL THREATS IN APPROVING BALLOT ISSUE!!!

Last week was asked our blog community for their insight and opinions on the current name game debate betwixt "Save The Paseo" activists vs. supporters of newly named MLK Blvd.

Right now . . .

BEHIND THE SCENES KANSAS CITY SPECIAL INTERESTS ARE DISCOURAGING COUNCIL FROM PUTTING THE 'SAVE THE PASEO' PETITION ON THE BALLOT!!!

Not just East Side leaders but local biz people are begging this council to punt on the issue and continue to delay the decision. Just as well-informed TKC readers predicted, concerns about legality and the "optics" of removing the MLK name are among the chief concerns.

Whilst Council deliberates, as promised, we're featuring some of the best comments from our TKC EXCLUSIVE discussion regarding local opinion on the election issue . . .

Super Dave starts us off . . .

"Yes, let the people decide as a whole and not the special interest groups."

A statement echoed throughout Northeast . . .

"The Paseo name is part of KC heritage and should not be discarded."

Lingering questions about legality . . .

"This is an illegal petition. Should not be considered. Must be first referred to the Parks Board."

TKC Reader Phil offers an informed perspective . . .

Let's start with legality of the Council's actions. The Counsel ordinance was perfectly legal because the Counsel has the power – as part of the MLK ordinance – to override any existing ordinance requiring the signatures of residents to rename a street. But if you really care about the city of Kansas City you should ask yourself this question: How will it look across the nation and across the world if Kansas City Missouri were to be the first city ever to hold an election to attempt to remove Dr. King's name from a place of honor?

Finally, a bit of pragmatism:

The "we can't take the MLK name away" is a red herring. Just rename another street like 63rd. The Paseo should remain.

Update: It's on the ballot!!!

I am a supporter of MLK Blvd and I think a lot of the concern from my friends is excessive. I'm confident that KC will vote to keep the name to honor Dr. King. The petitioners represent only a small subset of voters and they will not hold back the progress of our community.

    1. Just as long as we include public documentation of how much the king family is paid. That would be worth it to have this farce exposed.

    3. Dr. King is not worth honoring. James Earl Ray is worthy of honoring.

  3. Yes, how much is the King family paid and do we get a discount if we put a picture of each of his mistresses on a street sign?

You idiots just made a few consultant 50K to run the campaign against you. Thanks bitches.

  6. Perhaps we should make a limited portion of the Paseo MLK Blvd. How about I block for each of his visits to Kansas City?

  7. They shouldn't have caved to the religious leaders demands in the first place. They're more interested in their own political asses than what their citizens want.

  8. Make it absolutely clear a city council is a violation Missouri supreme Court case clay Chastain against Kansas City Missouri where the Court's rules at the city council has to put the ballot issue from the petition on the ballot it could only challenges if it went at the ballot but again they must put it on the ballot in order by the Missouri supreme Court it could be held in contempt.

  9. The fat fake revs choke their chickens. The eat a lot of fried chicken, too. And drive 10 year old Escalades with curb feelers. To Harold Pener clothing store. They plagiarize sermons, as only MLK could appreciate. Amen.

Slie, JoLIE and the council is trying to create a method to circumvent city/state requirements and not put the citizens Paseo petition on the ballot. They definitely do not want the citizens voting down what Slie, JoLIE and the council bullied through.

  11. Why are they so afraid of putting it to a vote?

Jolie needs to get out in front of this and make the campaign all about it but she's scared too. She'd win so easily it it were a referendum on preserving KC history

  12. That petition is legal and should be on the ballot! Tax payers should be aware of how much the King family is getting paid each year for this!!!!!!

MLK Blvd. was a dirty low down trick by the city and needs to be exposed.

  13. Save us from the problem the city council created.
    Go figure.
We pay them to create problems not solve them.

  14. Isn’t it funny how city council members shoved a womanizing cheater down our throats? Some of you may have missed the latest news on the released FBI MLK files. The rape he witnessed and did nothing. His affairs.

BTW the royals just lost, again. 6 straight in a row now. 19-43 is their record. Now THATS the glass family team I grew up with and have known for so long. The royals are back to being who they are as an organization. A farm team for the MLB.

  15. The racist part is how all the blacks did this illegally without properly notifying all the white people on the Paseo, that there is the real racism behind the name change, it was all done to spite whitey.

Did anyone notice how mlk blvd goes right in front of manny cleavers church? Mighty suspicious if you ask me.

And they want to name a street after him? How about Bill Cosby Blvd instead?

  17. So you went all in and you lost. LOL. The Paseo will be saved. MLK will get a tribute worthy of KC. And Mayor Lucas will have to try and accomplish something meaningful that doesn't use back room dealing and charismatic subterfuge. All is right with the KC world.

  19. Rename the north-south street The Paseo. If anybody still wants to honor MLK Jr. after recent revelations about the extent of his bad conduct (not even counting his well known plagiarism), change the name of Emmanuel Cleaver II Blvd. to MLK Jr. Blvd. After all, MLK Jr. did a lot more for Kansas City than EC II ever has.

If a vote is taken, MLK will go down in flames.

  22. I have been discussing another option with some friends and have found a lot of support.

Rename Troost Ave. into Trump Ave.

Just think about the unearned media our city would garner from such a move.

  25. Yes there was pressure to table this issue but I think the council did the right thing. I also like the level of snark that TKC provided. Very fun and funny. The petitioners take themselves far too seriously.

Put those on the ballot too.

  30. The City wouldn't be in this embarrassing predicament had they not ramrodded the decision through without a major public information campaign period that included full cost disclosures and public comment period. Not that it would do any good. Why Sly wants, Sly gets. This was a typical Kansas City costly cluster f^@%.
