Congressman Cleaver Applauds USDA Selection of Greater Kansas City Area for New Research Agencies’ Headquarters

The Kansas City region was chosen over potential sites in North Carolina and Indiana for new ERS and NIFA Headquarters

June 13, 2019

(Washington, D.C.) – Today, U.S. Representative Emanuel Cleaver, II (D-MO) commended the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) decision to move the new headquarters for the Economic Research Service (ERS) and National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) to the Greater Kansas City Area. Congressman Cleaver and members from the Missouri and Kansas congressional delegations have been advocating for this decision, sending multiple letters to USDA Secretary Sonny Perdue, the latest sent just last month. The move is expected to bring more than 550 jobs to the Kansas City region with wages averaging between $80,000-$100,000, while also bringing ERS and NIFA employees closer to the agricultural stakeholders and rural communities they serve.

“This is a major win for the Kansas City region, and I’m pleased that Secretary Perdue was receptive to our calls to bring these agencies to America’s heartland where they can better serve the communities they were created for,” said Congressman Cleaver. “While this is just the first step in bringing these agencies to Kansas City, I, along with other members of the Missouri and Kansas delegations, will continue our fight to bring these jobs and economic activity back home.”

Bringing the ERS and NIFA headquarters to Kansas City will help save taxpayer dollars and improve customer service by bringing the agencies closer to the farming regions they serve. After deliberations on relocation began last summer, the Greater Kansas City Area today was announced as the selection over multiple sites in Indiana and the North Carolina research triangle.

“The decision by USDA to select Kansas City as the location for the new ERS and NIFA headquarters demonstrates our region’s impressive combination of high quality of life, skilled workforce, and agricultural impact. The USDA is always in search of talented, experienced workers that can help forward their mission to promote agriculture production and economic opportunities to rural America. I have no doubt that the people of Kansas City will be able to meet these personnel needs,” Congressman Cleaver said.
