Will Question 1 Save Kansas City Neighborhoods Or Ruin And Reverse Downtown Renaissance?!?!

For about a year we've been talking about The Coalition for Kansas City Economic Development Reform and their gambit to cut back development subsidy. Never mind that any halfway competent legislator can subvert their requirements by way of an ordinance we an accelerated effective date. Here's a look at the grassroots movement to preempt city hall keeping nearly every popular local project on life support by way of hefty tax parks. Checkit:

Much Of Kansas City's Development Is Driven By Tax Breaks. Voters Could Scale Them Back

Kansas City, Missouri, voters will elect a new mayor and city council next month. But it's a lesser-known ballot measure that could have a bigger effect on the city's economic development. Question 1 would cap at the amount of tax incentives the city can award developers at 50%.

  1. Democrats never met a tax they didn't love. They love being taxed even when they don't see their tax dollars at work. So my thoughts are, the Democrat voters will give the developers as many and as much tax breaks as possible, in turn the buildings will sit empty and the developer will get huge write offs as a loss, in the mean time YOU PAY!!!!!

  6. Uhhh - @7:14, both Oklahoma City and Tulsa have Republican Mayors, and they're just down the road, take I-49 south and a hard right on I-44 at Joplin.

  7. So, the mayor and clowncil are worried about saving downtown, what about the rest of the city? They abandoned everything outside the downtown loop so one small portion could be saved...... and even that’s a maybe. Looks like it’s all for naught.

  8. private development does not rebuild public infrastructure especially if you dont collect any tax

  9. Honest question: what is the point of voting for something in kcmo if the city doesn’t follow its own rules or laws? Or perhaps makes controversial votes extremely difficult such as making people get a notary for a street car vote?

    Politics in kc is slimy.

  14. Developers have pretty much had carte blanche to this point and there is STILL no affordable housing. So all this BULLSHIT about if we cap incentives that it'll hurt development and kill affordable housing is total BULLSHIT.

Cap that shit. I could live with a caveat of loosening the cap for TRULY blighted areas of the city that really need the help. But Jolie Justus, Lucas and all the movers and shakers in the city don't want a cap because they want to make sure they can continue to use tax payer money to throw at development downtown. We've been way more than generous with incentivizing development downtown. The pump has been primed to the Nth level downtown. If downtown can't attract development and support itself by now then it's never going to. Over 10 years and BILLIONS of dollars spent downtown and we still need to inventivize development downtown?

  15. If we've been spending so much money / taking on so much debt in furtherance of all this "momentum" downtown, then why are the streets so fucked downtown? Walnut, Wyandotte, 11th, etc etc are terrible.

Just something Radish wonders about ...

  16. @4:04 PM - your query is absolutely spot on. Fact is billions have been spent downtown. And a disturbing percentage of those billions spent has been done with tax payer dollars/dollars that should be going to tax payers.

What makes the problem worse, as you pointed out, is the fact that despite all this shiny, new "stuff" we have downtown, infrastructure still sucks ass. That right there should tell you how or local leaders mis-prioritize the important things in favor of the bright, new, shiny objects they can buy with our money.
