TKC BREAKING NEWS!!! KANSAS CITY STREET SWEEPING CUTS VIOLATE EPIC EPA STORM SEWER AGREEMENT!!! 12TH & OAK REVERSAL UNDERWAY!!!

Embarrassing but good news for Kansas City reveals an upcoming reversal on a service cutback that would have left local streets in even worse shape.

Remember that the KCMO budget cut the street sweeping program citing a stormwater fund deficit.

Now, the push back according to KICK-ASS INSIDERS . . .

CITY HALL RECENTLY LEARNED THAT CUTTING THE STREET SWEEPING PROGRAM WOULD VIOLATE AN AGREEMENT WITH THE EPA!!!

The upshot . . .

BUDGET BE DAMNED, A REVERSAL OF THE DECISION IS NOW IN THE WORKS!!!

Kansas City, Missouri Clean Water Act Settlement is a tricky series of agreements and buried deep in the files is a requirement for the citywide street sweeping program to stay in place. Initially, there was hope that a half-promise to provide catch basin cleaning would satisfy the terms of the deal. Alas, City Manager Troy Schulte and water dude Terry Leeds had to step back from their slashing in order to cope with federal concerns.

And so . . .

While we don't hope for much improvement in the condition of local streets, it's nice to see just a bit of accountability at 12th & Oak despite the fact that it comes at the expense of a budget that CLEARLY is getting harder to maintain.

Developing . . .

  1. KC rarely if every lives up to its agreements. Glad that this is the exception to the rule. Street sweeping is a basic function of local government, to eliminate it would impact more than sewers. Almost a quality of life issue.

    1. Almost?

This week's sight that KC is getting desperate for money.

  2. Do the math, what we're seeing now is the justification for higher rates. That was the reason for the cuts in the first place -- To put the story out there and show voters that the need for more taxes was about their "quality of life" and not just one of many cases of mismanagement.

  3. Typical of the James/Shulte Administration and ALL members of the current City Council.

Charge into some bone-headed impulsive action with guns blazing, then tuck your tail between your legs and scurry for shelter when the results of your failure to study the situation first come crashing down on your ass!

    Airports, anyone?

  5. It's election time when city candidates discover neighborhoods. Really bad optics to cancel street cleaning but not terribly surprising. Hope the reversal sticks.

  7. How the hell does the EPA have it’s hands on KC where it can dictate its street cleaning? That shit doesn’t even clean the streets it just moves shit around all over the place.

Next strategy being discussed: Reduce financial impacts of the City’s @KCMOSmartSewer Program by proactively working with EPA to adjust the timeline for project completion and proposing additional green infrastructure solutions.

  9. Street sweepers came by a week or so ago and sat around idling a lot of the time to what looked like the drivers scrolling on their cellphones, and then left messes and piles they didn't pick up.

So, what's your foul mouth going to say when the EPA, attorney general, and media receive proof of the city's failures.

Dash cams and data transmissions=inexpensive and easy!

And, some federal agencies pay rewards for reports of ABUSE, FRAUD, or NEGLIGENCE, committed by public and private entities receiving federal money.

  25. Give Florida some credit for counseling against "smokestack chasing" -- using tax incentives in a desperate, and sometimes self-destructive, bid to chase developers. And Florida himself, he notes, denies counseling the abandonment of struggling communities.

    Apparently KCMO ignored this advise.
