SAVE THE PASEO PETITION SIGNATURES VALIDATED!!! KANSAS CITY RESTARTS DIVISIVE DEBATE OVER MLK BLVD!!!

Tonight's Kansas City grassroots democracy celebration of a very low voter threshold crossed.

The update . . .

"KANSAS CITY, Mo. - A petition to rename Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard back to The Paseo Boulevard has been certified and will go before the Kansas City City Council. A Certificate of Sufficiency was sent to Mayor Sly James and the City Council from the City Clerk's office after the petition to reverse at 4-month-old street name change received the required 2,450 signatures."

More importantly . . .

NOW PETITIONERS MUST CONFRONT POLITICOS AND CONSULTANTS WHO DON'T WANT THIS TOPIC TO HIJACK UPCOMING ELECTIONS!!!

Check the links:

Fox4: Petition to change MLK Jr. Blvd. back to The Paseo gains enough signatures for a vote

KMBC: A city spokesman said an ordinance will need to be introduced and sent to a City Council committee for discussion.

KSHB: It’s unclear if the new proposed ordinance will be considered in the Planning, Zoning and Economic Development Committee again or taken up by a different committee.

    1. ^^^^ WRONG.

Invalid petition. Should be thrown out with the trash. They are illegally trying to usurp KCMO authority. The signs are already up. The "debate" is over.

    2. Split the difference. Call it Obama MLK Paseo Boulveard. That should make everybody angry. And thereby give us all a victory.

  4. Great news, people need to vote to change it back to Paseo! There is history behind the name and tax payers don't need to pay money out to the King family when we need the money to stay here and work for our city. Besides it was done behind the backs of tax payers and that was dirty.

  5. In polite company, a person who has received an honorary degree does not use the title when referring to themselves, nor do they permit others to address them with the title. This is out of respect to those academics who have actually done the work and earned the title. So I would have expected The Paseo to be renamed Martin Luther King Drive - or whatever - but certainly not Dr. Martin Luther King Drive. Bad form.

  6. Please, someone tell us how much the yearly royalty payments are to the greedy King family. KC already has a park and a school named MLK. How much do the tax payers ship off to the Kings now ? Get a city official to stand in a pothole and tell us. Isn't this public record ?

  7. How much are the payments? And what does every other other city pay? Someone please prepare that list and lost it here.

    Well done and about time.

  10. I’m gonna guess if there’s a vote at all would it be those who live on the Paseo or would it be the entire city voting? It would be funny if it was just the people who live on the Paseo, the fat fake revs couldn’t vote and that would be worth it to see them shitting all over themselves!

  11. I think we should accomodate our black friends in the hood not with a street sign (except for "enter" at your own risk) but they deserve recognition so we should label malt liquors and bullets with MLK in hood liquior stores and call all the news footage of all the carnage in their neighborhods in this city fair. If they dont like it they should move to East St Louis, most KC tax payers will help them pack, hell the fire service should help them pack and drive them there since their greatest bitch is how the inner city takes away from their xbox time.

  12. No mail malarkey, but MLK family may make money still!!5/10/19, 1:12 AM

So what that the signs are already up. Tax paid municipal personnel with a bucket truck and a socket wrench easily takes them down just like they went up. Maybe auction the signs for some sensible use like trash pickups, potholes repairs, or charity. The revruns could buy them for collector/novelty items to hang on their garage walls.

Seems a compromised solution may have more acceptance if there is an MLK Drive for a couple of blocks in the city hall area. KCK designated a couple of blocks adjacent the city hall on North Seventh Street as Mayor Carol Marinovich Way. These few honorary signs are set below the North Seventh Street signs in downtown Dotte, so the official mailing address remains North Seventh Street. Wow! What genius!

  13. You have to give these folks credit for trying to introduce some basic democratic process into making these kinds of decisions.
But a petition has NO chance of succeeding when its up against the intimidation of the cowardly electeds by the east-side revs.
Hundreds of millions of tax dollars disappear into thin air.
Unqualified people are hired or hired every day.
Endless excuses are made about the behaviors that perpetrate well over 100 homicides each and every year.
And all the rest of the grifter "business model".
Elect some folks to 12th and Oak who have some common sense, an understanding of what the job of a municipal official is, and who has the guts to make decisions in the best interest of the greater community.
    No contest here.

  16. 9:15, MLK Jr. did receive a doctorate, in theology, so he's entitled to be called Dr. He did plagiarize another person's work along the way, but that was swept under the rug almost as soon as it was discovered.

A degree in theology is not worth the paper it's written on. All the subject matter is based on writings thousands of years old when most of the world's populace were sure the Earth was flat, yet parroted today as if their proclamations are fact. It's all OPINION unable to be supported by repeatable evidence. Might as well be a Phd in Gender Studies. If one believes the fat revs are fountains of "truth", I have a bridge to sell.

  18. Keep a close eye on this petition once it is referred to the Planning and Zoning Committee (under Section 2 of the Charter, it cannot go to another Committee).

Under Section 2 of the City Charter, their only function is to verify that the petitioners are "Property Owners" of property along the street in question (not done when the MLK name change occurred),and that there has been verification that the signatures on the Petition are valid (already verified). The Committee HAS NO OTHER ROLE, and cannot avoid forwarding the Petition to the Council as a whole for placement on a ballot (which was again not done with the original MLK name change) to be passed or not based on the majority of a City-wide vote.
