KANSAS CITY SLOGAN DOUBLE TAKE TONIGHT: THE NEW MIDWEST!?!?!

More important than that the low-rent political debate tonight. This evening we consider the latest marketing push from the crew at Visit KC.

TV news tells us that response has been pretty good.

But we want our blog community to have our own private screening . . .

First a glimpse at the camping kick-off . . .

"Welcome to the heart of the New Midwest. Yes, the New Midwest—it represents a fresh spirit, a reimagination of the region at its finest. And it all starts right here in Kansas City. The epicenter of a new energy, the crossroads of a creative revolution in food, art and business. A home to new people and new ideas—lots of new ideas. We’re staking our claim with a bigger, brighter idea of everything it means to be the Midwest. It’s time the center of the country became the center of attention. Consider this your invitation to join us in the heart of it all."

Food for thought about local life . . .

"It's farm to table, because the farms are closer to the tables. Welcome to Kansas City, heart of the New Midwest."

And then a tribute to the creative class . . .

Finally . . . A look at MOMENTUM:

And so we ask . . .

WILL THE "NEW MIDWEST" LURE MORE PEOPLE TO KANSAS CITY?!? I THOUGHT WE WERE ALREADY DOING GOOD WITH 25-MILLION VISITORS ANNUALLY?!?!?

Think about the seemingly desperate marking push given that local politicos tout big visitor numbers already.

You decide . . .

  1. I've seen worse. At least the videos look good and they seem professional done. A lot of cities don't put any effort into their promotion.

    1. The footage looks grainy and the tagline is really lame. Why are we talking on the advertising burden for the entire metro area? Should be much more KC focused.

  2. If KC is already getting 25 million tourists? Why go begging for more? The advertisements don't make any sense. They contradict most of what we've heard from the mayor's office about tourism.

    1. ^^^^^^^^^^^^ Wrong.

Not my business to defend the mayor but your premise is wrong. Some of the biggest cities in the world advertise for more tourism. There's never a point where you have enough tourists. Don't forget that study where we actually learned that there's a saturation of hotel rooms downtown. We've got to work to fill them. Coke is the biggest soda company in the world and they spend more than anyone else to keep advertising their products.

  6. 25 million visitors annually? This is definitely B.S.

Thats 68,493 people visiting a day. How do they even come up with this? Do they count all the persons coming to KCI and getting on a connecting flight? Do they count the people from other cities who drive to work every day in KC?

Thats basically saying a full chiefs stadium group size of people is coming to KCMO every day.

  7. Why is Kansas City so self-conscientious about getting national attention? Why do we care about what others think? We should just enjoy what we have and stop comparing ourselves to other cities. If I wanted to live in Atlanta, Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, or other cities, I would move there. I like Kansas City because we are not like those cities.

  8. The first commercial isn't so bad. The rest of them are kind of cringe-worthy. I know that other cities do this I just think we should have tried something that wasn't so generic.

  9. I hear tell that we've even got a place where you can go and throw a hatchet against some chipboard.

  10. Lipstick on a pig.
And anyone who actually believes this crap will find out in just one visit how ridiculous it is.
Come for a baseball or football game, or art at the Nelson Gallery, or to visit historical sites, or whatever your reason might be.
But KCMO city government has nothing to do with any of those attractions and actually detracts from any visitor's experience by the incompetent basic services it "provides" and the long list of taxes it imposes.
    One and done in KCMO!

  11. Do we really get more tourists than Holland ?

According to the “Perspective 2030″ findings, Holland is expected to receive 50 percent more tourists through the next decade — from 18 million visitors in 2018 to an anticipated 29 million in 2030. The Guardian, however, estimates that if the tourism numbers continue to rise so exponentially there may be as many as 42 million people visiting Holland by 2030.

  14. What’s wrong with this slogan:

    “The City of Fountains”

    Thanks,
    Radish

  15. It's "visitors," not "tourists."

  16. Well, we've got a few blocks of hyper development that has to be subsidized by 15 million a year; it's a chain-restaurant meat market for dudes who wear their baseball caps backward. Close by that we have a failing artist's colony of sorts that is so pretentious it can't even stand itself. Outside this little bit of heaven awaits the fifth most violent city in the country. Wheee!

  18. 1:44 AM comment NAILS IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Meanwhile, the rest of the country says, "Kansas City? That's in Kansas, right?"

KCMO leadership is desperately envious of larger cities. Instead of moving there, they're obsessed with trying to impress non-residents. It's all about their own insecurities.

Unfortunately for everyone here, if they have their way, they will bankrupt KCMO and ruin our quality of life.

  19. Well, we also have THE OLD WILD WEST. We can outshoot Dodge City.

Youall be sure to bring your shootin' irons. With your help we can beat last year's numbers.

Instead of High Noon, just stroll MLK blvd at MIDNIGHT.

  20. Those are cool commercials but holy fuck that slogan sucks

  21. I like it I think its kinda cool! With so many hating on KC you haters might try another city and move there. If you not part of the soulution you are part of the problem.
