Kansas City 'Save The Paseo' And MLK Blvd Push Back: Court Fight Coming Soon!?!?!

Northeast denizens, grassroots petitioners and sponsored content newspaper publishers better have deep pockets because local civil rights lawyers are gearing up for a fight they literally cannot lose. Whilst petitioners deserve credit for bringing this issue to a vote when some members of the clergy couldn't despite promises . . . Citizen initiative power is tenuous at best and very dependent on more powerful forces flexing their muscles inside City Hall -- Where voters high ideals usually go to die. Take a look:

Changing name of Dr. Martin Luther King Boulevard could go on November ballot

  5. There's no such thing as an illegal petition! This thing will be fought hard by the city because it's been done by black racist people who are trying to make a racial statement. Changing the name of The Paseo was done under the table with tax dollars spent on new signs and to the King family every year not just a one time fee. It needs to be fought until they change the name back! Hispanics need to know this name change was also a nasty statement towards you too!

  9. What a bunch of idiots, how is this going to help the black community? It's just a feel good proposition to make these ministers feel like they are doing the city a great service, yet the murder rate of K.C. will remain the same.
Naming a street isn't going to placate the gang bangers. Idiots.

  13. @10:31, you might be on to something. If they converted 71 into an interstate, they could even call it MLK section of I-49. I'd vote for it, several times. As long as you don't have to go through those ghetto-empowerment stoplights.

  14. 7:47 is on the Money. A half a Dozen Black ministers .That want to change the name. And Four hundred thousand citizens That want to keep the name THE PASEO. DID YOU HEAR THE JOKE, ABOUT A BLACK MINISTER WALKS INTO A BAR.... REMEMBER IN THE BIBLE IT STATES not to worship false gods. And the minister's want to rename a street After M.L.K.

  15. @10:31 and @11:52, a lawsuit filed with a Federal Court resulted in those stoplights rather than overpasses (and has been the direct cause of several pedestrian deaths).

Since there cannot be any stoplights on Interstate Highways, that is why Fed Hwy 71 was not an extension of Interstate 29, and why Interstate 49 cannot go any further north.

The only possibility would be an appeal to Federal Courts getting the original ruling overturned, building the originally planned six overpasses, and connecting I-29, with I-49 going away.
