Kansas City Opts Out Of Ride-Share Strike?!?

Across the nation there's gig economy worker push back against the practices of a rising star Internets corporate giant.

However . . . Via social media there's a debate over local participation.

Some claim the availability of rider-share services are a sign the strike didn't go over well in Kansas City. HOWEVER, notice that the number of drivers took a nosedive this morning despite a few scabs.

Nevertheless, the mini-strike seemed to accomplish its goal and tarnished Uber's IPO.

We sent a few messages to some of our ride share friends and got one reply . . .

The local Uber dude wrote back: "Yeah, not going out today and did Postmates instead. I wouldn't call it "solidarity" but joining in the complaints is the right thing to do. The wage theft is ridiculous and KCMO regulations make it even worse."

  2. Here's a groovy internet "gig economy" story.

Baltimore: City Government Paralyzed By Cryptocurrency Ransomware Attack

Hackers wrote in a note that 3 Bitcoins (equivalent to about $17,667 at current prices) will unlock each system, or approximately 13 Bitcoins (worth $76,557) to unlock the city's entire communication system. Apparently that amount is too much for Baltimore to afford.

Jeez I wonder how long KCMO's "not secure" system will last.

  3. ^^^^ Good point. But I'm sure the executives are going to make out of the deal with boatloads of cash.

  5. Just from some casual conversations I would guess that Uber drivers don't make enough money to make it worthwhile. For a while they make some extra until they prematurely wear out their car and realize how little they made. Looks like Uber wants to cash in before they have to pay drivers more.

  6. Another leftist buzz phrase, like "equitable" and "momentum," is "wage theft." When you are convinced that you should be making $55,000 per year, but you are only making $50,000, somebody must have stolen that $5,000 you didn't get. That's wage theft, darn it! And I'm speaking from experience because last year somebody stole $1,000,000,000 from me in just that way.
