Private biz pioneer couldn't compete with the current biz climate and local political leadership focusing on handouts over opportunity. There's a hope that politicos might save this place but both mayoral candidates made sure to get their social media selfies before the end of the biz. Take a look:
Leon's Thriftway closes Saturday, owner hopes to revive soon
For more than a half-century, Leon's Thriftway was a staple on 39th Street in Kansas City, Missouri. But the owners were preparing Saturday to close the grocery store's doors possibly for good, though Vernon Stapleton hopes to give his father's store a second lease on life.
Oh, a food desert. The city should pay someone to open a store there so people in that neighborhood have somewhere to steal, er, I mean shop.
