DID QUINTON LUCAS JUST SOLVE THE KANSAS CITY HOMELESS CRISIS?!?!

No, no he didn't.

However, in a rare reality check, last night Westside residents pushed Mayoral candidates to deal with the KCMO homeless crisis given that nearby BEARDSLEY ROAD HAS BEEN SHUT DOWN FOR A YEAR AFTER A HOBO VILLAGE INFERNO REPORTED 1ST ON TKC!!!

This morning, the leading mayoral candidate offers his solution after some time to contemplate . . .

Quinton Lucas: "How to address homelessness? 1. Create access to good job opportunities. 2. More affordable housing opportunities." #kcmayoraldebate

That sounds nice but already he's getting pushback from his hopeful yet naive commentary.

A few choice quotes challenging the sentiment:

"I hope these are not your only two ways to address homelessness. There are so many steps that need to take place before a homeless person can even attend a job interview. Such as personal hygiene, hunger, and access to resources for interview prep"

"Access to mental health care, drug addiction counseling and programs, education..."

And that's the kicker that people on the street level acknowledge but politicos seem uncomfortable discussing.

A top echelon insider reminds us:

"Kansas City's homeless problem is really just another manifestation of a drug problem. The influx of homeless people that we're seeing aren't working poor folks who are down on their luck. They're people with severe drug problems who also might be confronting mental health issues as well. What's worse is that many, not all, are prone to violence. It's a public safety problem, not something that "social justice" efforts are going to solve with more freebies and local socialism."

You decide . . .

  3. Whenever the police choose to shut down a homeless camp, social workers and reps from the UG Mission and the Salvation Army (among others) sweep the site 24 hours beforehand offering to help people gain admittance to shelters. Invariably, the number of takers is less than 10%. Jobs and affordable housing options have absolutely nothing to do with this issue. A little less social justice and a lot more "tuning in" would serve Quint well. That said, I hope he beats Joie's ass in June.

  4. Drinkin' Quinton chiming in with sophisticated solutions from the 'magic wand' school of social science. He should have just said he has no clue.

Not a word about personal responsibility from the race-baiting candidate du jour, either. Wonder why.

  8. How you solve it is more tax incentives to developers and luxury apartments so the loser bastards have to git the fuck out!

    God bless Luxury!

  9. His answer is pretty decent...or at least better than I was expecting. I don't get all this talk about affordable housing because there is a TON of affordable housing on the east side.

  11. Momentum !!! We are going to be just like San Francisco, the beautiful City by the Bay (except for the weather). Tents up and down the Main streets, close to the Trolley. Shit on the sidewalks. Pedestrians must walk in the street just like in SF so as not to setp in shit or get stabbed by needle armed losers. Thanks Slyster, along with all SJW democraps.

  19. Those homeless people just need to go to college for free like Queerton did and then get an affirmative action job. Then when they get arrested sleeping in their car, drunk outside a gay bar in Lawrence, they can get the charges dropped.

  21. I agree affirmative action is a huge deal still today. Quinton Lucas has never had to lift a finger for anything and never will. He's like the stupid idiot who puts a coin into a machine and when the machine doesn't work he keeps putting coins in not getting anything in return.

I have an idea: Why not talk to some actual homeless people & see who they are & what they think their needs are?

Try treating them like members of your community instead of criminals. They are not a public safety problem, but your dangerous stereotyping is. I think you will find that some homeless people are veterans, & some are children.

  24. Here is the solution. This will work.

    1. Find all the homeless on drugs and the young people who stand on corners asking for money instead of looking for a job. Put them on a one way bus to San Francisco or Oakland. Not kidding. We dont want them. Ditto for the illegals. They are taking the jobs of Americans who want to work.
    2. Eliminate the eTax and other taxes like the tax in case Obamacare is repealed because we need to pay the head of Truman $2M a year tax. These do nothing except drive businesses away.
    3. Have the churches and other charities help the rest of the homeless who are down on their luck and trying. They can help with baths, haircuts, clothes, a good night sleep before the interview, temp housing, etc.
    4. The businesses that are attracted to KC after the tax cuts could be incented to hire clean, homeless people who try. Especially in this economy. A bigger incentive if the company puts itself in a bad school district and the homeless person relocates to that area.
    5. Have the city admit its taxing faults and pay reparations to the homeless it caused by providing three months of rent assistance after the homeless person finds a job. $300 a month payable to the rentor for three months until the newly working homeless person has a couple of paychecks under their belt.

Its time to dump the illegals and drug addicts and help those that try. Its also time to stop penalizing all of KC with the high taxes.

This will work. If you disagree, you are wrong.

  26. Certainly, there are lots of layers to the homeless problem in any large city. But it is also possible to "overthink" the issue. That is especially true if we think of homelessness only as it applies to single persons.

It is not simplistic to say that the cure for homelessness is: homes. That is especially true for homeless families in dire need of having a stable place for children to live and where they can reliably attend school. Usually that also requires a sufficient income and help with childcare. The long-term impact of families being required to live in a car or being evicted from one place to another can be devastating. People who view the homeless problem is limited solely to the fellows begging on the corner simply do not understand its harshest societal impact.

Not to say the homelessness among single individuals should not be addressed. It's just that it is a different problem that may need to be addressed differently.

Check out this documentary. You can't let the homeless just break laws with no consequences. Seattle has handcuffed their police department so that they can't enforce laws. The homeless there know they can walk into any store, shoplift, and get away with it. Check out the Facebook group Seattle looks like shit to see more. I'm a liberal guy but Seattle has gone too far. Most homeless are drug dependent which leads to all sorts of crimes they commot.
