TKC TOLD YOU SO!!! OUR AWESOME BLOG COMMUNITY FIRST ON QUINTON LUCAS DUI CHARGES DISMISSED!!! NOW SUPER DAVE CONSIDERS CELEBRITY INFLUENCE ON POLITICS, CULTURE, LAW AND VOTING!!!

If the election plays out like we expect (it will), this is probably the last time we'll use the mugshot of Kansas City Councilman Quinton Lucas after his DUI and ultimate dismissal that our blog community reported at the top of the day and hours before any other news outlet.

They got their news from TKC. FIRST.

But even better . . .

RIGHT NOW OUR PAL SUPER DAVE CONSIDERS THE AFTERMATH OF THE QUINTON LUCAS DUI DISMISSAL AND THE IMPLICATIONS FOR AMERICAN POLITICS IN KANSAS CITY & NATIONWIDE!!!

After OUR KICK-ASS TKC BLOG COMMUNITY shaped the discourse across the metro.

The best & brightest among our blog community sympathize with the Councilman, but wonder if Lawrence, KS prosecutors dropped the charges because they couldn't win or because of politics . . .

Here's the perspective from Dave along with the full statement from Team Quinton and a roundup of today's coverage:

Super Dave: Lucas Dismissal

Is our legal system now being operated based on who you are? It appears now that public figures and celebrities are given carte blanche to buy their way out of problems with the legal system.

Councilman Lucas made a $1,000 donation to Legal Aid “to help broaden access to the basic rights citizens are entitled to under law.”

If justice is truly blind it means everybody that faces a chargeable offense in a court of law in this nation should be entitled to have the same entitlements. If Quinton Lucas, is allowed to buy himself out of a DUI charge for $1000, it would only be fair that everybody who is currently charged in the state of Kansas with a first-time offense DUI charge, be allowed to make a $1000

How can anybody in good faith vote to put this person into any political office? He’s very clearly demonstrated he feels he is above the law. He has very clearly demonstrated he should not be held accountable for his actions. Is this the kind of person the people want running Kansas City? If this is indeed the caliber of people the voters in Kansas City want, then no complaining should be coming forth with when taxes keep going up and up, while infrastructure and city services keep becoming less and less all the time.

Time to wake up ladies and gentlemen.

The time has come to see that people of good character whose best interests are those of the residents for the area they represent are being voted into office. Till you, the voters start getting up and going out there and making a difference the caliber of people running for office isn’t going to change. Just because a person claims to be a lawyer does not make them a leader of a city. At one time we were a nation who got behind strong leaders and voted them into office. Then we went to simply voting to try and keep somebody out of office. Now we’ve gone to where who’s running for office is such a joke nobody bothers to vote for or against. So which ever special interest group has the most people is going to see their choice makes it into office. What has become clear here of late that people whose best interests are only about them are being put into positions they are very unqualified to be in. Case in point, you have a politician in New York whose work experience prior to be voting into a national office was being a bartender and some minor work in a minority organization. Her pie-in-the-sky promises were ate up in a district with over a 9% unemployment rate. Yes she won the vote from the poor people and I’m not saying it’s wrong to have dreams but at the same time one needs to grasp the reality of life and do all they can to better themselves. Sitting around thinking some politician is going to make your life better with pie-in-the-sky promises will never get you anywhere.

Kansas City will only become a strong prosperous well-run city when the voters get out in large numbers making sure the correct and the best choice for mayor and council members are put into office. Time for the general public to stand up to special interest groups, with votes that say, “We no longer are going to let you run things. We want people running our city that know how to run a city. We want our cities to be operated along with all phases of our government by people with strong business degrees and practices who have demonstrated strong leadership abilities not just the ability to sell out to special interest groups only.”

Now check today's statement from Team Quinton for those who haven't seen it already:

Charges Dropped for Quinton Lucas

Today prosecutors in Lawrence dismissed a case against Quinton Lucas arising out of an October 2018 incident, in which Lucas chose not to drink and drive. Councilman Lucas has maintained throughout that he made the responsible choice not to drive, and appreciates the opportunity to seek justice in this case.

In response to the dismissal, Lucas said “It is a fair result and one that we expected, and I am proud that I made the responsible choice not to drive that night. More importantly, this process has continued to make clear that access to justice is often out of reach for many in our society. I’ve been blessed with the time and resources to have the legal system function as it is intended. Too few in our society have that opportunity.”

Councilman Lucas made a $1,000 donation to Legal Aid to help broaden access to the basic rights citizens are entitled to under law, saying “wealth should not determine outcomes in our criminal justice system.” He added, “beyond funding organizations like Legal Aid, we need to take a good hard look at our criminal justice system.”

The dismissal was signed this morning in Lawrence by both the City Prosecutor and the Honorable Scott J. Miller of Lawrence Municipal Court. Councilman Lucas also thanks his counsel Timothy Riling of Lawrence, KS and Scott Gyllenborg of Olathe, KS. Lucas had previously filed a motion to dismiss the case.

KCTV5: DUI case dismissed against Kansas City mayoral candidate Quinton Lucas

KMBC: Lucas was arrested by the Lawrence Police Department late on Oct. 18, 2018, on suspicion of a DUI.

KSHB: Lucas said he had attended an event where he drank alcohol and decided to wait in his car until he felt it was safe for him to drive. He was still charged with DUI since a person is considered to be in control of a vehicle if they have access to the keys (whether in their pocket or the ignition), they are in the car, and the car is operational.

KCUR: Lucas also announced a $1000 donation to Legal Aid on Thursday. Legal Aid provides assistance to people who can’t afford to hire an attorney.

Fox4: Asked Jolie Justus, who is also on the Kansas City Council, for her thoughts on the matter. Her campaign manager said they don’t have any comment right now.

You decide . . .

    1. Again, again and again. The charges were bunk. He shouldn't have faced a DUI if he wan't driving the car. Quinton was right to fight it and he should be congratulated for it. He made everyone who visits or lives in Lawerence safer.

    2. Really liked the column Dave. Hope KC does wake up but at this point there isn't a lot of options.

I would have liked to see a mayoral election between Miller Vs. Canady. I think those were the more honest candidates who really understood the city.

But we've got what we got and it's a bad choice either way.

    3. Again, and again, and again: Quinton not only showed incredibly poor judgment in being charged with this crime, he doubled down by using privilege to weasel out of his accountabilty.

  10. The legal system has never been about justice in this country! Its a MONEY MACHINE! No judge gives one shit what you did or why you did it or who you hurt or killed, that Judge at the end of the day is a politician, and politicians only care about their ass and the money they can get from our hard working asses!! If you think I am wrong - prove it, and when you cant, you know I am fucking right!

Who f-----g cares. Kansas City lazy uninformed voters deserve the government they are too lazy to even vote for. It's okay to enumerate all the problems this shitty has under a democratic administration, but don't expect any level of sympathy sufficient to get folks off their asses to fix them.

Until true fiscal conservatives have at least an equal input into KC governance, expect more, and more of the same. I see no light at te end of this tunnel.

NaziDave was never going to vote for a black man. He hated James, denying that it was about race, but now is going to vote for the white women who will continue doing everything that James was doing rather than a black man, because he suddenly discovered that the law favors the connected so he can pretend to be outraged that a minor infraction is not being prosecuted.

    In other words: BULLSHIT

  21. Interesting comments, but Lucas was never driving under the influence. He was sitting in his car. The charges were rightly dismissed.

Go get blasted at westport tonight, crawl in your car, start it up, and pass out behind the wheel. What the FUCK do you think will happen to you? You will be going to jail for DUI. Anything else is a fucking lie. Go run out into traffic, you worthless bitch.

  22. What the hell kind of antiquated conspiracy bunker do you live in Dave? Thinking that a $1000 donation might be all it takes to buy a JUDGE in a public case, ha! What's next Dr. Evil, sharks with frickin laser beams attached to their heads?

If you're really desperate for a story beyond what is obviously an unlawful arrest and charge done right by a reasonable judge working within the bounds of the legal system, maybe it's this. The good folks on the Kansas side took one hard look at this thing and asked themselves, do we really want to get in a pissing match with the next mayor of Kansas City?

There are no special interests or PACs at play here Dave. There is also no pie in the sky, liberty or die, oh me oh my sense of high school cartoon politics that you aspire to.

I hate to break it to you, but most folks who actually make it out of their parents basement take every reasonable opportunity they can to put themselves in a good position with those in positions of power. Lawrence recognized that Lucas is in a position of power, and soon to be in a much bigger one. They gave him the legal benefit of the doubt.

Uh oh Dave, logic reared its ugly head again! Lawrence, like damn near every one else paying attention to THIS world, FAVORS QUINTON "THE TEFLON" DONALD LUCAS! Get in line or be left behind, brother.

  26. You know, if you're a first time DUI offender and not "excessively" over the limit, you can plead these charges down accordingly. Sometimes courts will take a first time offender and plead them down to moving violations. However, if a defendant screws up and gets another DUI in their probationary period, they're going to jail. Any good attorney who is on good terms with prosecutors around the area will be able to work this agreement out.

Lucas will still have to deal with the repercussions of a license suspension and insurance that is a LOT more expensive.

I know TKC readers love a good conspiracy but this is much ado about nothing.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. No. Wrong. Lucas will have to deal with nothing because the case was dismissed. Charges dropped. Deleted. No plea. No lesser charge. Nothing because he did nothing.

      This isn't hard guys.

    2. Nah. He was drunk in public to the point of passing out and exerted a little privilege to scoot out from under the responsibility.

  29. FACT: Quinton Lucas does believe that he's "special"....I guess because his momma's been feeding him that line all his life.

KC is full of articulate young attorneys. If you're Caucasian, Latino or Asian you don't warrant any special attention because you are baseline material.

However, if you're an articulate young Black attorney you are a celebrity when you walk in the door. Then on top of that, if you have a hard luck tale about your impoverished single-mother struggling to raise you, some want to nominate you for a Nobel Prize. Never mind that your legal skills are mediocre and you've never established yourself at any firm.

    ReplyDelete
  30. @8:48 - as much as I hate to admit it, I have experience here. Once you're charged with a DUI, it's filed at the state level and your license is suspended regardless of the outcome of your case. In order to drive again, you have to submit an SR-22 to get your license reinstated which your insurance gets a hold of and in turn either drops you or raises your rates a LOT.

All this is the administrative side of a DUI. There is NO WAY around this. From a legal perspective, this charge can be wiped away and it's a freebie towards your DUI counts. This is critical because when you get a 3rd DUI, it's a felony.

Again, I know TKC commenters lover conspiracies and all but this whole thing is really a situation of 'nothing to see here' because a lot of first time offenders get this same offer.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Byron you ignorant slut. Super Dave can't stand Jolie and if you paid any attention you would know so. I thought you're supposed to be blind? So how can you read anything?

When sitting in a car with the engine running passed out from drinking you're DUI! No ifs and no buts!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Apparently, you're flat out wrong.

      Delete
  32. Hey 12:04 - I'm not arguing the merits of the case....I'm saying these things get dismissed or knocked down to moving violations ALL THE FUCKING TIME. Reading comprehension....give it a shot sometime.

Again, regardless of what charges he ends up facing or ultimately not facing, he will pay the price on the administrative end in the form of an AUTO-FUCKING-MATIC 30 day license suspension and filing an SR-22 to get reinstated which in turn leads to getting dropped by his insurance company or much higher rates.

But by all means, get angry about everyday happenings in our legal system. We all get it, you hate connected politicians or black people or all of the above. Now scoot back down into your basement.
