TKC EXCLUSIVE!!! SOPHISTICATE ACTIVIST TRACY THOMAS REVEALS OVERLAND PARK MILLENNIAL TROLLEY SCHEME AMID COMMUNITY FIGHT TO SAVE THE GAZEBO!!!

Tonight we feature one of our favorite Golden Ghetto denizens spitting HOT FIRE in her crusade to rescue a bit of JoCo 1980s architectural history.

To wit . . .

TRACY THOMAS FEARS AN OVERLAND PARK TROLLEY TO RIVAL KANSAS CITY'S STREETCAR AMID THE RUSH TO TEAR DOWN THE OVERLAND PARK GAZEBO!!!

Here are the highlights from a recent note she sent our way . . .

Tracy Thomas: Save the Bandstand

Unless a few senior activists conduct a civil disobedience action, and chain themselves to the steel structure near 81st and Metcalf behind Matt Ross Center, the OP council will rush in and tear down the bandstand this summer--in a big fat hurry we believe--to put what's tantamount to a new bathroom there.

And closer to Matt Ross Center, a stupid "paper airplane sculpture" which will serve as a new place to sit. (It's not even an original work of art. It's a copy being peddled across the country to city councils by some lazy architects in Omaha!! They were paid $353,000 for this design, and then it will cost $3.7 million to build it and remodel the park and build a toilet as the centerpiece.

As activist Roger (the Plumber) Peugeot says, "I've been in every fine home in Johnson County, and NONE of them has their toilet at the front door!"

BECAUSE THE CITY IS DOING LIKE KCMO--AND PLANNING TO BUILD A TROLLEY UP AND DOWN METCALF!

Last night, the council refused to let 65 citizens speak in opposition to tearing down the bandstand.

Now council calling Thompson Park a "regional park" for millennials.

Something is very fishy here . . .

The bandstand is made of steel. GOOD FOR ANOTHER 200 YEARS, according to Pulitzer-prize winning engineer who solved the Hyatt collapse mystery, Wayne Lischka.

Whereas OP council claims its falling down.

The bandstand is a replica, build in the 80's to match the adjacent 1911 carriage house. Whereas OP council dismisses the bandstand as nothing special, BECAUSE it is an accurate replica! Frank Thompson and his wife are donating $1 million of the $3.7 million for the park, and say they do NOT approve of destroying the bandstand--because they lived for decades across the street from it.

The neighbors think of this as their neighborhood park.

Whereas last night the OP Council said this is some "regional park", and it's part of a scheme to run an independent trolley system up and down Metcalf so the millennials don't have to have a car.

The Downtown OP Chamber used to call the area Historic Downtown Overland Park. But recently deleted the word "historic" because some out-of-town consultant told them that millennials don't like that word!

This story mirrors the KCMO trolley fiasco. Elected officials who don't know anything selling out their constituents in service to developers and some amorphous "millennial lobby"

    1. The solution is simple. Just build the KC streetcar all the way Overland park.

    2. sorry, not interested. I'm just taking Uber. Most people in KC are doing the same. The streetcar is more for tourists and weekend visitors. I'm not sure if there are enough hotels within walking distance to justify that kind of expense. $46 million per mile is a very steep price tag for this kind of experiment.

  3. ^^^ EXCELLENT QUESTION.

Nice job Tracy. I may not agree about the trolley angle but you see EXACTLY what is going on here, it's a scam to push the property owners out of the equation.

  5. Ahh the secy, sensuous and always mysteriously alluring Ms. Tracy nailed this one right. I called both my city councilmen today and told them that since they voted for this idiocy when they ran for reelection I wouldn't be voting for them. Their attitude was pretty much "fuck you". Thanks anyway Tracy.

  6. Nice work Tracy, glad to see you out and about and willing to challenge the so called "leaders" of Overland Park. You're doing the right thing and I hope there will be more people who remember this betrayal come election time.

  7. Thanks, Tony.

I have a great and affordable political consultant at the ready, to meet with candidates for OP city council or even mayor. They think they are Annointed Ones, know better than the citizens.

True, some hearings were missed. The neighbors thought when they defeated the plan to move the Farmer's Market to the park, they had won. Council was VERY tight lipped about the fact that they let a no bid contract to some lazy architects in Omaha. $353k!!!

But their arrogance stepped in doodoo last night by refusing to let the crowd speak, while lecturing them about being too old to have "vitality". See you at the polls, Mr. White, plus the two locals from Ward 1: Mr. Healey and Terri Happer Schier. And maybe Mayor Carl Gerlach.

I despise arrogant council members. OP's are worse than Shawnee's.

Imagine a Friday afternoon in Omaha, and the hired gun architects say, "Come on Darrell, we gotta design some f'ing thing for overbearing ladidah hicks in Overland Park. An old man at the historical society told me it was the first place an airplane landed in Kansas. Got any ideas??"

So Darrell II folds a paper airplane and sails it over to the desk of Darrell I. "There's their f'in new performance space. Now let's go get a beer. We just made $353,000! And since we didn't promise it would be 'ART' or one of a kind design, we are absolutely free to peddle this crap all over the country! Just hope we cement it into the ground real good so it doesn't take off and fly. We just invented Millennial Airlines."

  8. wow rail on metcalf. Just going to try to slap together a transit system with no planning to take you to the next strip mall, may be 50 years too late for that neck of the corn field to pretend to do transportation or urban planning, but souper idea.
I remember when Chili's on metcalf and 119th was at the edge of a vacant field just back in 1993 and look at the beauty there now, and the beautiful Sprint Campus.

  11. Tracy gets it. As do many other level-headed residents. As for the donors wanting the bandstand to stay, they’re a lot nicer than I am. I would seriously think about giving my money to another beneficiary. Part of OP’s character is that it’s not KC (and that isn’t meant as a dig), so stop trying to make it something it’s not, especially to appeal to a demographic that works at Starbucks and lives at home with mom and dad.

  12. maybe it's the fluoride in the water.

  13. what a dumb idea to get rid of something that so many people love. You would think that the OP council would get the point.

  14. Tracy should just run for mayor. Let her run the joint and perhaps some level headed common sense would return to politics, at least in OP.

  15. Well done Tracy!

  18. A side by side pictorial representation of the two structures shows the council needs a mental health evaluation. Except for two of them.

  19. Looks like OP's city leaders are getting to be as bad, maybe they already are, as what KCMO has.
KCMO has the failed fair weather toy train and OP wants to duplicate a failure which does not make sense.

  20. Tracy Thomas

Your comments and information is always interesting.

Excuse this question if I’m missing something obvious... Is your article posted on your blog? The bandstand / toy train (oooh riding the bus down one of the ugliest corridors in the area) / $$$ paper plane article enticed me to go to your blog and look around - but I didn’t see this item on jocopost.com.

  21. Any updates Tracy on your homeowners association?

  22. 8:10--great question. The answer is no, the story is not on my blog, Jocopost.com. At least yet. I just got involved with the OP bandstand and the ageism on that council, and the city's secret Golden Ghetto Trolley that will mess up Metcalf.

And I've been busy fighting the preposterous $54 million Shawnee Community Center mail-in May ballot proposal. And going to meetings listening to MY city council tell bald-faced lies...that promising on a ballot to cover 'financing' does NOT mean the hidden $16 million in 'interest'!!! That's bond fraud. But hopefully, we will defeat it. 82% of folks on Nextdoor.com are voting no. Nextdoor, the finder of lost dogs, is how uninvolved people who don't know about TKC stay in touch since the Star is worthless.

So that's my priority. Also need to feed a new FB page, NoMoreTaxesShawnee.

And for the faint of heart who like less sizzle to their political choices, I refer folks to a great new site 25 Shawnee folks have posted: BetterWayShawnee.com.

So I'm behind. Plus planting 18 boxwoods and golden junipers and 20 bags of rubber mulch from Costco--myself, no illegal Mexican gardeners for me, like they do in Mission Hills.

I'll get to it. And thanks for looking!

And Chuck, thanks for your vote of confidence that I should, from Shawnee, just run for mayor of Overland Park. And then, like Clay Chastain, promise that IF I win, I'll move there!

That's not my style. And can't leave all these boxwoods behind...

  23. 8:31--no, Craig Scholes/aka anonymous troll. Not since your wife was replaced as worst HOA president ever. Our HOA is doing great! Thanks for asking.

You embarrassed yourself a year ago, at the last annual meeting. That's when you stormed out, butt crack glowing in the fluorescent lights, from the last annual meeting. In your out of control anger, you nearly broke the latch on the middle school library's door. All because the HOA wouldn't let you completely cover your rooftop facing the street with a dazzling array of butt-ugly solar panels, to light the mancave your bride let you build in her basement.

Oh, by the way, happy anniversary. I know you married your wife at a brewery in Chicago. Such a class act. As reported on your former podcast which had six subscribers, you loser. Namaste.

  24. This issue has been going on for months and Tracy has ignored the whole issue. Now that's it's a done deal she leaps up seeking attention on the matter. Stick to Shawnee Tracy you never lived in OP and most there can't stand your stupid ass.

  25. oh look--8:59--the Chris Hernandez of OP!

Mass transit from the past century that messes up traffic for the Joco metro is everyone's concern.
