TKC EXCLUSIVE!!! RAT INFESTATION RETURNS TO DOWNTOWN KANSAS CITY!!!

Springtime in Kansas City brings renewed life, blooming flowers and a rapidly growing plague of vermin to the streets and alleys of downtown.

There's a growing rodent crisis in big cities across the nation but the problem threatens the upscale image of new Downtown KCMO development more than anywhere else.

Sadly, there's a politically charged social justice conflict at the center of it all.

Look closely at the areas where rats are making more brazen and public appearances in and around downtown Kansas City and notice those spots also serve to feed the homeless.

Providing food to the poor is a noble goal but the reality is that a lot of these folks discard their meals without much care and the rats follow quickly behind to pick up the leftovers.

The politics of this issue are rough because locals don't want the health department throwing bleach on the food of the homeless, but there's also no denying that encampments and hobo hangouts have given rise to a growing population of rats. Of course we hope the hobos will be a bit more tidy with their food waste but this growing downtown KCMO rat infestation isn't going to be solved with an easy fix.

Remember that our TKC blog community called out this issue a couple of years ago. One day later local news followed up but the problems has seemed to have worsened this year.

Downtown Kansas City denizens have seen a noticeable population boom among rats during Springtime 2019 but calls to City Hall reveal rat control programs shut down and merged with 311 - A long suffering help line where responses to complaints are measured in months.

To wit . . .

CAN JOLIE JUSTUS OR QUINTON LUCAS SOLVE THE KANSAS CITY RAT CRISIS?!?!

It's the kind of question that local media needs to ask political hopefuls but the topic betrays the myth of downtown "momentum" and reveals so much propaganda promoting endless subsidy and upscale development has overlooked the burgeoning population of rodents on local streets during this election season.

    2. I have been a resident of KCMO for over 50+ years and I sadden that you would print a story and not fully investigate it‼️ Here is the truth, homelessness plagued every large city and, like everything else, KCMO has failed to be proactive in remedying this problem. As for the rats... definitely not caused by feeding the homeless‼️ The rats come from the riverfront via the numerous sewers and tunnels under the city. Furthermore, if you walk down any of the streets where buildings have been redeveloped you noticed rats come out via the ground where the trees are planted. Walk down 12th, 13th, 14 th you will see numerous business owners who have placed rat traps outside their businesses‼️ The homeless are not being fed in these places‼️ Furthermore, I worked on numerous developments during my 15 year tenure for JE Dunn Construction and I have been in some of those sewers, storm drains and tunnels and they are scary with millions of rats inhabiting them‼️ Two things I can assure you, the rats are coming out because all this development has disturbed their habitat and what we are seeing is the rats response. Furthermore, I live downtown and have been for 10 years when I was lent to the construction company from Minn who built the Sprint Center. I also worked on the H&R Block Building, One Kansas City Place, Costentinos, JE Dunn Corporate Office and a lot of smaller remodels. As a matter of fact, I am a relative of the family who owned the Cherry Street Inn on 10th and Cherry where I also assisted building the present parking garage and apartments‼️ In response to the blame placed on feeding the homeless...not only do I witness those groups who feed the homeless clean up afterwards, myself and another person go out late at night and clean up what may have been either overlooked or left later that night‼️ Whoever is trying to make this political is pitiful‼️ Don’t complain about rats as result of feeding the homeless, complain about the serious crimes that have been committed and not reported by the news media such as the murders that have occurred‼️ There have been shoot outs and murders unreported and unsolved...that’s the political issue in a nutshell‼️ It is safer on 9th & Woodland than downtown and they have issues with rats and homelessness‼️ Pitiful‼️

Practical questions almost never get answered. The guy who actually wanted to fix potholes didn't even finish close to the rest of the pack. KC votes on image not the issues.

  3. Fucking nightmare. Pay 3,000 a month in rent and walk out to an entrance full of rats.

  4. You can spot the Republican rats in KCMO. They call came from JoCo and they constantly beg everyone for more government cheese.

  5. Problem is worse when it's dark. Totally thought there were a bunch of cats downtown but then looked closely and there are nothing but rodents moving back and forth in the alley behind my office. Really gross. I don't blame the homeless, it's the Water department AGAIN at fault because they're obviously coming up from the sewers.

  6. I blame the schools. They don't teach critical thinking skills so we end up talking about socialism and "momentum" rather than the real issues.

  16. This is disgusting in every sense of the word. Even TKC had to admit that EVERY city has a problem with rodents, it is a part of pest control. But to say that the rats are the number one issue for downtown is simply not accurate. KC has made incredible progress and nobody can deny it. While there may be challenges and issues, to deny that downtown is one of the best attractions in all the Midwest is simply false. It amazes me how this blog and the readers are obsessed with the negative aspects of KC but REFUSE to acknowledge progress we have made.

  17. ^^@Go4KC: You have to remember that this blog is full of geezers who do nothing but complain. All day. Every day. Doesn't matter what, they will complain. They come here everyday because Tony keeps giving them their daily hit of dopamine. They don't go anywhere, do anything, or have any sort of social lives. Complaining about everything makes them feel better about not being connected to a city that quite frankly has passed them by. get used to it.

  21. No rats here! They said the same in Los Angles, San Francisco, Seattle and now Kansas City. Where ever you have the homeless living on the streets, you get RATS! They eat the leftovers the homeless toss and then multiply. The homeless dump their trash in the parks, alleys, bridges and anywhere they get fed. It's time the politicians address this issue.

  25. The basic problem is that the good "Christians" who self-righteously have decided that they will "feed the poor" want to feed the poor as far away as possible from their own suburban homes and feel they have no obligation to clean up after the poor. The inevitable public garbage dump that follows their spasms of generosity is of no interest to them.

They wish to exercise virtue – but only half way and at other people's expense.

Homelessness is a complex social issue. Some – even families – are homeless because they cannot find affordable housing in which to live. Some have no interest in housing (then the responsibility that comes with it) for a variety of reasons. The problem is that simply delivering food to public spaces and then wandering back to your suburban homes feeling full of virtue does not address any of those underlying problems and leaves the city with the additional problem of having to clean up after the effects of this "drive-by virtue".

^^Saint Philip,S.J. (Society of Jurists) could help by getting those "poor" and "homeless" some limo rides out to the beautiful and bountiful burbs. YOU KNOW, DON'T SIMPLY FEED THEM RIGHT WHERE THEY ARE ALREADY. Instead, Saint Phil the philanthropic, and his amiable attorney buds, and other "responsible" associates can do better than lowly "drive by virtue", huh?

Or, how about most holy Phil just give these needy folks enough for bus fare to get to the KC urban soup kitchens, like that very good one near KCK federal courts, the Gill Services (or St. Mary's to us Strawberry Hill oldsters). Yes, I have served at many lunches in my childhood area of downtown Dotte, right alongside an affluent, notable Plaza-officed attorney who resides in South Leawood, and grew up in KCMO. He is still a hard-working, half Italian son in a very large extended family--most of his long ago immigrant kin were very poor, but only in material wealth, and for a very short time. That's the spirit of the kindness that comes from the ones who share with the hungry WHO CHOOSE NOT TO GO TO THE SCHEDULED INDOOR MEAL SITES.

  29. Oh great! Now we have the LGBTQIAR group.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I have no legal or moral obligation to feed or house people who choose to live in squalid camps, i.e. "bums." We should limit our help to the involuntarily temporarily homeless get back on their feet, which is a much more realistic goal.

When people get really hungry (e.g. Leningrad 1941-44) they eat the rats (as well as cats and dogs). Apparently nobody's that hungry yet.

  31. Go4KC and Geezer Hater are a perfect couple. Both are delusional, yet think they have it all figured out. Geezer Hater, while a complete pain in the ass, is obviously very angry and needs an outlet for his frustration. His parents should have had him in therapy a long time ago as he is now truly to be pitied. Go4KC, however, is a first-class douchebag if he thinks anyone really believes the nonsense he peddles. It’s truly an insult to the residents of the city he claims to love.

  37. Just want to add to ad that somebody wrote something about the water department at the root of the problem. That is right on the money, and maybe our city should conduct an outside audit to try and fix the situation. Does anybody really want to live in a city filled with rats?
