TKC BREAKING NEWS!!! ROGUE ACTIVISTS TARGET SUPPORTERS OF KANSAS CITY PETITION TO SAVE THE PASEO!!!

Behind the scenes the current fight over MLK BLVD vs. The Paseo continues to escalate.

To wit . . .

KANSAS CITY INSIDERS REPORT ACTIVISTS GONE "ROGUE" HAVE TARGETED THE EMPLOYERS OF PETITION ORGANIZERS!!!

Here's the intercepted message sent our way . . .

"These people (the organizers of the Save the Paseo petition) need to be exposed. They need to be put on notice that they can't push back civil rights and the will of the people while they still take money from our community. There is a teacher in Grandview who is circulating this petition, it's time to get at her workplace and let them know she is against honoring MLK. There is also a small newspaper who takes money from minority businesses, we need to shut that down. And there is one other gentleman employed at ######### who needs to answer for this kind of biased political activity. We will be sending word to their employers, advertisers and customer(s) in the community. We should not do business with these people if they are going to advocate against MLK . . ."

Call it "cancel culture" or simply the price of participating in the public discourse. At this point the support for this action is limited but growing. Notice that TKC will not call out any of the organizations or people that this group is threatening with economic backlash but it's worth noting that the already claim success in dissuading some voters from signing the petition in question. Clearly, the activists have been emboldened and now want to hit at the bottom line of their political opponents.

It's also worth nothing that:

- The group is only about a half a dozen strong from what we can tell.

- Many of the urban core ministers who supported the name change and other more established leaders have DISCOURAGED this tactic and, instead, believe they will prevail if the petitioners succeed and bring the issue to a public vote.

- The petition to Save the Paseo seems to be making good progress in garnering signatures despite the lack of a funding mechanism built into their legislative power move which threatens to disqualify the effort.

And so . . .

Debate over the legacy of the iconic civil rights leader and naming a Kansas City street in his honor continues as most locals in the mainstream agree with some form of tribute but have yet to come to an agreement on a location whilst the replacement of signs on MLK Blvd is nearly complete.

  1. Political thuggery is a KC tradition. Sly's team has done the same thing for years.

    1. This might work on the timid or weaker advertisers or employers but generally people don't like being told what to do and they HATE it when others try to intimidate them. This might be tougher than the activists believe, in fact, they might find find that they'll be encouraging others to support the effort.

      ^^^ +100

If they really didn't like it, they would just tell people to vote against it.

  2. Yes, I've heard about the strategy and it has been mostly rejected in the 5th District where I live. If the council and Quinton Lucas would have done a better job on this issue, we wouldn't be at this point. The selection committee recommended MLK Blvd on 63rd street. Then we could have put the issue to rest. Now it'll cost THOUSANDS in wasted hours to keep this argument going.

  3. How about we remove funding for 18th & Vine? And just name that the MLK district?

Can't just blame Quinton Lucas for this one, Jolie Justus voted for it also.

  5. This is the kind of things jerks like that Socialist Nazi Byron Funkhouser does. I use to have a blog profile but from it Byron got where I worked at and starting calling there and posting to other websites how I was a racist and other related trash. New age liberals can't win on merit that have to lie and try to destroy your life for simply disagreeing with them. Just to bad we can't make these peoples/haters names known so they can get a little of their own medicine back.

Ummmmm. This is about as dumb as blaming the Notre Dame fire on Muslims. Maybe even dumber. Civil Rights will not be advanced by renaming streets. How would these folks know what the "will of the people" is, since "the people" were not given a chance to vote. And not changing a street name does not equate to being "against honoring MLK."

Sounds like tactics city minions would use.

  8. I have no problem with it. The people who signed the petition shouldn't either. You shouldn't be embarrassed if you really believe it shouldn't be changed but you should probably be ready to explain why your reasons aren't racist... if you can.

  9. ^^^^^WTF does race have to do with it? Only because a dullard like you would want to make it so!

  14. This is very very very serious.
Like a tick on Dracula- the emotion of suppressing letting people vote is quintessentially ambivalence at its finest.
It is, per se, rather Draconian.
The effervescence of the - quintet of meditation is delightful in that the humidity of the wrath of the preponderance - if you will- is not of course- what it is.
To make sense of this is to understand.
Let us come together as we walk away.
As a great orator once said, “ Ladies & Gentleman “
So.... if you understand any of this - please explain the rational for not letting people vote on this.

  18. ^^^^ One last stand against sLIE and his bully pulpit friends perhaps? The whole point of it is the city didn’t allow all the people on the Paseo to put in their two cents, plus the fact they broke city charter by allowing the street to be renamed failing to follow the rules. I think the most important thing here is it’s not as much about the name is how it was done.

Ask Alicia cannady if you want the truth of the matter.

  19. "...you should probably be ready to explain why your reasons aren't racist... if you can." No explanation will be forthcoming. You don't like my signature on the petition? Osculate my posterior.

  20. I believe this whole conversation is not at all about Civil Rights or honoring a Civil Rights icon but rather about control, domination and shaming anybody who refuses to submit. Tony's source creates a very wrong and disturbing narrative. The people against the name change arent at all against honoring Dr. King but take exception to the methodolgy employed to accomplish the name change. There isnt a single sentence in the petition that states the issue is about honoring Dr. King. The issue is procedural and Dr. King fought long, hard for equality and eastsiders ought to be free from the grandstanding of the politicians and organizers who ramrodded this thing through. The people, all citizens of this City, should and will, collectively decide how we should honor Dr. King - and it will be done with the equity, transparency and will of the people. Dr. King deserves a respectful tribute and this entire name change disrespects his legacy and the freedoms he fought so hard to champion. Stop, stop, stop using his legacy in this very demeaning way. Just stop it!

  26. Oh, so Christian ministers try to deceive the public into thinking that we are AGAINST Dr. King and will use this lie to try and hurt people? Yeah, that seems like a great strategy. They're trying SO hard to change and control the narrative because they know that 80%+ people opposed changing the name of The Paseo. They know they can't win and it's KILLING them. Threats are all they have left.

  34. No, no you’re not, you’re just like a whole lot of us “white folks” that want the blacks to stop ruining everything, nothing racist about that, unless it interferes with their agenda. The real racists are the blacks, they hate whitey and will lie cheat and murder anyone that gets in their way.

  36. Sacajawea. Anne Frank. Harvey Milk. Each was a minority and each left honorable marks on history. Yet Native Americans, Jews and gays do not throw tantrums and demand that streets, etc. be named for them. As someone else pointed out, KC already has a school and a park named for MLK, but in typical negro fashion, nothing is ever enough. And yet they wonder why so many people find them off putting.

  39. The public still doesn't have a straight answer. City taxpayers will pay an annual fee for naming rights to the King Family in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Instead of an approximate, what is the exact number? The majority of people on the Paseo do not want the renaming to happen, yet influential power and money prevail over needs of those who are truly affected by the change. These are my reasons for opposition.
