Social Media Question: Is The Kansas City Effort To Save The Paseo Racist?!?!

Locals social media denizens have been questioning the motives of this effort demanding a public vote. While the group has defended itself valiantly and spoken of historical preservation and Democracy . . .

AS OF THIS WRITING THE "SAVE THE PASEO" PETITIONERS DO NOT HAVE A SINGLE AFRICAN-AMERICAN SUPPORTER AMONG THEIR GROUP!!!

To be fair, these signature gatherers did get early support from Council Lady Canady and the use of her office BUT the core group remains mostly white and one Asian dude that they trot out but who might have lost interest.

TKC doesn't care one way or another but behind the scenes scrutiny of this group is increasing as they make impressive progress toward accomplishing their goal.

  1. Good call. Watching white people cringe while they try to explain their not racist is always fun. One screw up and their petition gets labeled as a hate crime. That should be fun.

I would have supported renaming any street after Dr. King if it could have been done without paying an annual extortion. Just imagine how much money Lincoln's family has coming to them.

When the King family demands their money, tell them no & see what happens. What they're doing won't hold up in court.

Otherwise, how can you justify the expense.

  3. Byron is a racist.
The King family deserves reparation money.

  4. Save the Paseo.
    Stop paving over history.
This has nothing to do with racism.
    Find another street.

  5. Agree with @9:15, why not rename Cleaver Blvd.?
We can then name something after Cleaver when he's dead, like we were supposed to.

  6. I didn’t see where the city asked any white people on Paseo if it was ok to rename the street, that’s racist right there.

  7. Martin Luther King, Jr. is the icon of a failed idea.

  8. I know many African - Americans who do not want to change the name of the Paseo. More FAKE NEWS!

  9. To hell with the MLK crowd! We already have a school dedicated to him where they teach the young minority skulls full of mush what to think! And how to be a good liberal! Why do we need to name a damn road after him he's never even been in our city!

  10. We should name something after James Earl Ray, a true American hero.

  11. If you disagree with renaming anything after MLK then you're a racist? ummm okay..

  12. Renaming the Paseo MLK Blvd. is racist unto itself. Good idea just wrong street.

  13. Yesterday I spoke with a black woman campaigning for Alissia Canady who is against renaming Paseo to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. She said so many people don't know about the annual payment to the King family for the naming rights, that Dr. King didn't directly do anything in Kansas City for us to put his name in place of Paseo, and added that residences and businesses will have to pay to change the address in their checkbooks, signs, business cards, etc. which is an extra expense [in a poor area]. As a white male, I agree with her.

  14. Please quit letting Quinton Lucas be a "tipster."

  15. So odd, just counted 80+ POC in the group before I got tired of counting based on profile pics. It's almost like this "tippster" is even in the group. This was a publicity stunt by Reed & Lucas. Can't imagine how he will be mayor if this is how he handles a simple name changing situation.

  16. I am a Black woman opposed to the name change. The Paseo is a part of this city’s history. Why not name one of the number streets after MLK, such as 63rd, 35th or 75th?

  17. Dr. Stay Away Blvd

    Money
    Leaves
    Kuickly

  18. Personally, I get tired of seeing MLK exalted into a sainted position. To say he had a checkered past is an understatement. There are plenty more black folks who worked diligently and peacefully to advance civil rights and no city goes tripping over itself to honor them with a street, park, etc. Not to mention, MLK had nothing to do with KC. If you want to recognize a black person besides Cleaver (yuck!), why not consider someone like Charlie Parker or Oleta Adams?

  19. If the only way to remember who the fuck MLK was is to rename half the streets and bridges in this country after him it cheapens the memory of his accomplishments.
