Downtown Kansas City Tragedy: Transit Activist Jared Miller Struck By Semi-truck & Killed Walking Across Interstate

Recently, we noticed Kansas City's professional community still reeling from a recent loss that defies logical explanation.

Some of his friends have decried local news coverage but the death of this otherwise brilliant, young man is odd given that he seemed way too smart to try and cross in the middle of a busy highway. He was a champion for downtown and his recent passing has created a social media stir.

The latest update from recent news is somewhat low-key . . .

According to investigators, Jared R. Miller was walking across the interstate when he was hit by the semi truck in the eastbound lanes of I-70 near Main Street.

More . . .

The engineering company that Miller worked for, HNTB, released the following statement Monday:

“The employees of HNTB are shocked and saddened by the sudden death of our colleague, Jared Miller. He was a skilled visionary who was recognized regionally and nationally for his transportation planning and engineering expertise. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones as we all deal with this tragic loss. Jared will be deeply missed in our firm and the Kansas City community where he faithfully and selflessly served.”

  2. Never heard of him but that is really weird.

  3. Very sad. Another reports said he had his Apple airpods in when he was found, so he likely couldn't even hear traffic coming. Horrible price to pay for a shortcut of just a few steps.

  4. Sometimes, just a moment of inattention is all it takes. RIP.

  5. Obviously he wasn't that smart. Also never heard of this guy. Was he decapitated?

  6. ^^well others did, hence the story. Don't worry loser, no one will remember you when you go!

  7. +100 ^^^ 8:36 just a sad little man begging for attention on a blog. Seems like a wasted life from start to finish.

  8. All the fancy credentials and degrees on earth is no replacement for common sense and paying attention to ones surroundings. It's way to easy to become a victim of ones own overconfidence.

    ReplyDelete
  9. ^^I don't think his "fancy credentials and degrees" played any role in his death. One thing had nothing to do with the other. Jesus, that was a reach. False equivalency much? What an awful post.

  10. Makes sense that those pushing for bike lanes, "visionary" ideas, and want to engineer our city into a less livable pap, are the kind of people who are dumb enough to walk out in front of traffic with their headphones on

  11. Sad story but the real scoop is how badly Sly James has fucked this city over to the point one of his own gets snuffed out because glamour projects and ludicrous ill conceived concepts take priority over public safety.

Welcome to the banquet of consequences.

  12. 9:26. You think that's bad...wait until you find out how Cleaver made 71 the most dangerous and inconvenient stretch of road in the metro. That needs to be fixed first

  13. If he wasn't under the influence of alcohol/drugs, it would appear to be a suicide.

    There I said it.

Everyone else was dancing around the obvious.

Do you cross the interstate on foot?
If you do, and you're a healthy 20-something person, can you avoid being hit by a tractor-trailer?

    1. My thought too. Why was he down there...it's not easy to get there, obviously dangerous, and many other more convenient routes???

  14. Maybe he was distraught with his beloved streetcar extension being rejected by Trump.

  17. ^^^ Probably a rolling gun battle on the toy train line during one of those conventions this summer. Being this city is so dysfunctional at this point that wouldn't even be a surprise or shock to anyone.

    Happy Walking

  18. Miller was asked what he was most hoping to learn in @CenturionsKC. In a newsletter he answered, "every great city has a story of how it adapted to change and succeeded, and I want to learn how that story has been and currently is being written in Kansas City"

    Lesson learned. Tragically unfortunately.

  20. For whatever reason he commited suicide. There is no other reason for him to have been down on the interstate. So either he was depressed over buying into one of those over priced places to live downtown or his gay lover dumped him and it may have been both of those reasons.

But have no doubt it wasn't an accident, it was suicide.

  21. Doesn’t look to be gay.

  22. ^^^ Oh, yes he does!
Must have had money though - that sort of cover doesn't come cheap!

  23. I witnessed this accident. I was there. He literally came out of nowhere running across the highway. He was not visible until he was actually on the highway. The semi had no time to stop. It was not funny. It was not something to laugh or joke about. This was someones life. All lives matter. This is something I will never be able to un-see. It has been imprinted on my brain. My 12 year old daughter witnessed this man get hit by a semi and die. Please be mindful of other people. Please respect people and their feelings. Please never get out of your vehicle on the highway. Please do not think that just because the highway is clear that it will stay clear. My thoughts and prayers to his family and friends who are suffering an incredible loss.

  24. ^^^^^Yes a suicide as many has stated.

  25. jesus christ, that is who it was!

NYC should have made an interstate loop around wallstreet or central park.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Was he alone on a mission he hatched in his cubicle late one night or any other HNTB folks investigating with him?

    ReplyDelete
  27. let me guess, the truck wasn't even intending to stop in KC.

    ReplyDelete
  28. What a dreadful method of suicide if that is the theory. Surely not. A horrid death by trauma??

    ReplyDelete
  29. 1:21 I hope never to have to witness anything like what you saw. But your account does raise suspicions, not so much of suicide but of an assault. What could have scared him that much? I hope we find out someday.

  30. It's a wrap. Just another KCMO unsolved mystery.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I am sorry, but anybody who decides to cross 1-70 when there is a bridge above you is a moron. Just because you are book smart doesn't negate actual common sense.

Is this who is representative of the hobo street car fools and TIF thieves?

Oh, and closing the loop is one of worst ideas I have heard yet. Where would the traffic go? How would that impact other parts of the loop? Traffic. Already blows now due to the Viaduct under repair.

We need some actual common sense in KC. Not people not paying taxes and pulling ideas out of their a--.

  33. 8:16 traffic sucks b/c you have all those folks on i-70, i35 and 71 going THROUGH kansas city, not ,going to kansas city, being dumped into a circle jerk dumbass loop around downtown.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. So, again where should the traffic go? Downtown is the intersection of 1-35, 1-70, 1-29 and 71. Removing part of the loop will not change this configuration.

What solution do you propose? Close the highways coming in?

I work Downtown and am very aware of the traffic and patterns. But, thanks for playing. I am presuming you are a Mensa member.

  34. iwas once chased by urban youth on bikes in nyc on st patricks day, they were white, don't recall what i said to them.

    ReplyDelete
  35. i would be very happy to see the northern section of the loop closed, and get those INTERSTATES out of downtown completely, am sorry miller won't be physically present to help make that happen.

    ReplyDelete
  36. if you are INTERSTATING you can go around the city not the loop.
