A glimpse at City Hall legislation that proves voter sentiment doesn't really count . . . Especially after a low turnout election.

Deets:
"The proposed ordinance — which will be discussed this week by the City Council and, if approved, would be on the June ballot — would maintain the status quo of available incentive packages and prevent lowering a cap on TIF allowances from 75% to 50%, which the Coalition for Kansas City Economic Development Reform has proposed."
As usual, there are more than a few activists making a lot of noise about this one and we'll see how much interest they'll be able to stirrup beyond a Sunday night report.

Actually, TKC, this is pretty awful and you need to follow up on it. With the Pre-K vote the electorate has spoken. We're tired of city hall's tax games.
ReplyDelete^^^ Actually this will be a very great test for the two mayoral candidates to see how they vote on this and what the future will hold for Kansas City. If they both vote yes, we can look forward to more Sly James style corporate leadership. Quinton is the most likely to oppose. If Jolie doesn't she's going to lose a lot of votes.

ReplyDeleteThis is a bald face attempt to thwart democracy. Why on earth would any council member vote for this? There is nothing in it for the city, so what's in it for them? This stinks of corruption.
A real debate on TIF reform would start at 25% & discuss lowering it to 15%.
Same old, same old for KC. The hits keep coming if you've got a deal in front of city hall.

I’m just glad the city has a per capita homicide rate higher than Chicago. The TIFs are handed out like candy, the sewage at flush creek smells the plaza mobs up nicely, and we demand a lesbian be our mayor. We have an “entertainment” district at Westport that needs secure checkpoints and metal detectors. Hey, we renamed Paseo to MLK thanks to city council and the bodies still drop on it.
ReplyDeleteNobody gives a fuck at city hall. The people who would have actually tried to steer this city into normal functioning are voted out. A lesbian and a black man. Great. I’m sure either of them have the answers. Neither of them have proclaimed anything to deal with blood and muscle tissue spilled on kcmo curbs.

Hopefully Ordinance 190241 passes so that KCMO will move up in the rankings of most in debt city in the nation. Murder rate is now in the top five so KCMO needs to get in the most in debt top 5.

There are effectively no tools left for this crew to deal with another major crisis. They have no Plan B. They’re completely defenseless in the event of another economic shock. We should all take a moment to appreciate this level of incompetence. This doesn’t happen overnight. It usually takes decades of “blunder and neglect” to engineer financial vulnerability on this scale. But they’ve somehow managed to pull it off in seven years.
