UPDATE: KANSAS CITY RESIDENTS STAND UP FOR KCPD MOUNTED PATROL!!!

At the outset of the Prez Trump era an alleged instance of animal abuse directed at a Kansas City police horse sparked outrage across the nation. The mere suggestion that a protester in the company of ANTIFA slapped a horse was enough to garner support for this police animal across partisan lines.

While a few activists decry alleged animal cruelty confronted by these animal in the performance of their duty, there are a lot of locals who believe this aspect of community policing offers a better opportunity for outreach and effective crowd control.

The sitch:

"The KCPD says it is reexamining the role of the officers currently serving on horseback, and at the next board of commissioners meeting, the department could take steps to disband the unit, reassigning the officers for budgetary and personnel reasons."

Take a look:

Deets:

Some of these horses in the unit have been interacting with the public for more than a decade. For people who love seeing the animals, it's hard to imagine an end to the Mounted Patrol.

Alice Lee Hollister is part of the group Friends of the KC Mounted Patrol, which provides funding for some of the Mounted Patrol's saddles and supplies at the stables near Swope Park.

Hollister believes the animals and their officers are some of KCPD's most valuable tools

“They're the ones that soften and create the rapport between an officer and community,” she said.

Currently, the city employees seven officers in the Mounted Patrol, with a little over $630,000 budgeted for the unit.

And so we ask . . .

SHOULD KANSAS CITY KEEP THE MOUNTED PATROL DESPITE RISING COSTS?!?!?

You decide . . .

Of course not. Nearly a quarter of a million dollars annually is too much to pay for a publicity stunt.

They need to do crowd funding. I'm sure more people would donate to this than would ever give to the animal shelter.

KC needs to pass stricter animal control. No carriages, no police horses. Animals are not entertainment.

No need for show ponies, kc need real police officers working to solve murders and secure neighborhoods. Get your priorities straight KCPD.

It's easier to park a car at a convenience store or a doughnut shop than a horse and not as messy. .

Wrongo. Quite the opposite. The horse is an impersonal barrier between the public & the officer, who seems elitist while on horse back.

the police sure do love their toys.

Tell me about it. Their patrol cars cost about 80k each and they always have a half dozen of those waiting to get scrapped. They got drones, shot spotters, two helicopters, license plate readers and jails. You can't haul a case of gas grenades like you can a four runner and you don't hear the rich friends of mounted police paying for it but they sure like selling the hay.

Eliminating horse patrol incompatible with Green New Deal priorities!
