TKC WARNING!!! LOCAL BIZ ALREADY FRUSTRATED BY NEW KCI AIRPORT!!!

Amid this increasingly silly election season there's talk of a new "outreach program" for local companies to participate at the airport but the reality is that the advantage of homegrown small biz to compete at new KCI has all but disappeared thanks to the sketchy structure of the deal.

Take a look:

"Because the airlines are "paying" the $1.5 billion cost of the new terminal, the new lease that begins once the new KCI becomes operational gives the airlines more power over making changes at the airport. . . . Under the deal, any project at the airport costing more than $1 million must be approved by more than two-thirds of the airlines, instead of the city or its taxpayers."

We put in the quotations on the word "paying" because the airlines aren't really paying anything more than rent with KCMO taxpayers guaranteeing the bonds for the project and most of the startup costs via a short-term loan.

A KICK-ASS TKC SMALL BIZ READER offers a translation about the biz jargon . . .

"City Hall has ALWAYS done a horrible job in working with local businesses and most times has served to drive small business out of the city. The competitive advantage of small business is that we have a fan base among voters and Council can make a lot of their constituents happy by helping to bolster local companies and workers. The airlines don't care about Kansas City small biz and it's becoming apparent there will be a lot less local involvement in how this airport is built."

  1. Small business isn't going to get any deals but I'm sure there will be some nice perks for the local lawyers who made this happen. Gotta start somewhere.

  2. No handouts to "minority" business that are usually just front companies. Sorry.

  3. ^^^^ Choose the best person for the job no matter of the race or location. That is the only way to make this airport a winner.
