TKC SUNDAY QUESTION: WHAT SHOULD KANSAS CITY VOTERS KNOW ABOUT THE PETITION AGAINST MLK BLVD!?!?!

TKC noted this one earlier but now the debate seems to have intensified as it garners more attention: A small group of petitioners are working against MLK Blvd on The Paseo.

Here are a few fun facts that might better inform the conversation . . .

- Voter signatures for petitions are public record and easily searchable - Don't think people won't be looking over who signs on to the effort against MLK tribute. That's neither support nor criticism - It's simply a fact.

- The petition could prove successful and KC council can still throw it out - Ask Clay Chastain about that one.

- Petitioners are absolutely correct when they talk about how KCMO overlooked rules governing Blvds when they moved forward with the MLK rename. The Revs also promised an election but didn't deliver.

Reality check: The petition to block MLK Blvd is a long shot but certainly an important debate and yet another opportunity to call the opposing side racist.

Even better . . .

WHY DO YOU THINK KANSAS CITY VOTERS SHOULD OR SHOULDN'T SIGN THE PETITION AGAINST MLK BLVD?!?

You decide . . .

  1. Right about the searchable part. Not a good look for anybody who wants to run for office or has a job that involves work with the public, which is mostly everybody nowadays.

  2. Everybody should sign it, if the only reasons are to piss off the fat fake revruns. The fat fried chicken eating bastards don’t run the show around here but act as if they do, just because they drive 12 year old Escalades

  3. Most people know one thing about it. It won't do a damn bit of good, it won't change anything.

Kinda like voting against the toy train and extension. We're getting one like it or not.

  4. Everybody should sign it who wants too, without fear of retaliation or intimidation, retaliation against those who sign will be easy to figure out, those caught harassing and intimidating against anyone who fights against an illegal cause needs to be thrown in jail.

Did the fat fake revs intimate the clowncil into putting these signs up in the first place? I ain’t skeered of no fat fake rev.

  6. The petition is just trying to get the city to follow their own rules.

  7. ^^^^ Excellent point @8:02! It's not about race, it's about the rules. That's what should be emphasized.

  8. What Kansas City voters should know about the petition against MLK Blvd??? Sign it, that's what! Stop letting this city dictate to you!

  9. Is this about extortion from the Southern Baptist? If you do not have something named after MLK we will not come to your city with our convention and spend our money in your city. I have not heard anyone ask that question. Also would like to know what company is making all of the signs? Who owns that company? Are there any illegal Kickbacks coming to the person awarding the contract?

  10. The city makes their own signs, so it costs 10 times more to make

  11. after my son graduated he decided to travel the us on foot , he has been back in the city now for six years . he says everywhere he went where there was a MLK sign he knew from experience that he was in the "HOOD", and as a young white man that he had better move the hell along!! So once again the city has made a huge MISTAKE

  12. Tough situation. You're a racist of you sign it and you condone the city council's policy of fast and loose if you don't.

  15. There were two elections about expanding the streetcar. Both passed, both addressed the expansion of the line, and both are being ignored.

  16. Dang when I signed that petition I was told it was to re-name ward parkway “Malcolm X Blvd” ....

  18. Why sign? Because Paseo is part of KC’s history, MLK is not. AND KC has a park named for him anyway. There were lots of people, black and white, that were important parts of history, but KC doesn’t need streets named for them unless they had local ties (ie John Wornall; Buck O’Neill).

  19. They can call it Martin Luther King Boulevard, Sly James Boulevard, hell call it Hey Nigga go Fuck yo Mamma Road for all I care I'm still calling it Paseo.

  21. Can someone please come up with a real price tag for this ? I've heard that the King family is going to get $ 366,000 for the naming rights. I could almost justify that cost if it was a one time payment, but every year, really? And the local news has been silent about that conveniently. How much are the signs going to cost? And who's getting a kickback. Meanwhile, the potholes are horrible but at least now we have a MLK Blvd..

  22. how do i sign this?

  23. The real problem is that a small group of people hijacked the City Council to get change the name of a historic boulevard. The Paseo was the least popular of the three choices the citizens committee came up with but was forced on us anyway. Personally, I think 22nd Street would be a better choice since it runs through an area connected with civil rights history, is wide enough, has new construction happening, and involve renaming an iconic boulevard.

  24. First of all is important to understand that no rules were violated by the Council in this process. The Council has the absolute right – by ordinance – to supersede rules that might otherwise apply to the street naming process. That is exactly what it did.

The Paseo has never actually had a name. "Paseo" is simply the Spanish word for the French word "Boulevard". Had the Parks Board not been so arrogant and dismissive towards those who advocated naming the street in honor of Dr. King, a workable compromise could have evolved: The Paseo of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Then anybody who felt the need to simply abbreviate their address as "The Paseo" would be perfectly free to do so.

Dr. King was not just an African-American hero. He is an American hero. He not only advance the cause of civil rights and voting rights for all Americans, but courageously opposed the foolish war in Vietnam. Had his advice been heeded, it would save the lives of 30,000 American boys – by far the great majority of them white. When he was murdered, Dr. King was in Memphis supporting a LABOR union fighting for decent wages and working conditions.

Frankly, it is our honor for Kansas City's grandest street to bear his name.
