TKC READER FACT CHECK: IS COUNCILMAN QUINTON LUCAS A 'PROFESSOR' OF LAW?

A reader note about the side hustle of this Kansas City councilman . . . Take a look:

THE EVOLUTION OF "LAW PROFESSOR" QUINTON LUCAS AT KU SCHOOL OF LAW

Recently, the issue of KCMO Councilman and Mayoral candidate Quinton Lucas referencing himself as a "law professor" has been called into question. Not only has Lucas done so, but he has encouraged others to do it, and failed to correct various media organizations who reference him as a law professor at KU.

Today, you can go to the KU School of Law's website and reference all their faculty members. Quinton Lucas is listed as a "Lecturer of Law" not a professor.

(TKC: Here's the website link to KU law with exact location info crossed out even if the law school is willing to share publicly:)

There are 50 individuals listed as faculty members of the KU School of Law. Only 2 of the 50 individuals listed are titled as non-professors.

If you don't understand the significance of academic titles at universities, and the ethics involved in their misuse, then I encourage you to review your resume and delete all those phony references to you having a Ph.D., a Purple Heart, a Congressional Medal of Honor, a Nobel Prize, and any other fabrications you slipped in there. Words do matter.

We noted in Thursday's Mayoral Candidate Forum that Nick Haines introduced Lucas as a "lecturer in law", which Lucas acknowledged was the correct title, so perhaps the correction process has begun. We just wonder why it took so long. Liberal Privilege?

UPDATE:

Councilman Lucas just tweeted a response:

"Good academic question! I was appointed a visiting assistant professor in 2012. In 2013, I was appointed associate professor. Upon election to Council, I moved to Lecturer given that I could at most teach half time. As a practice, students and peers call you “professor” for all."

Quinton Lucas joins the KU Law faculty as the school’s first Visiting Assistant Professor in over 30 years. Prior to entering academia, Lucas practiced commercial litigation with Rouse Hendricks German May in Kansas City, Mo., where he represented clients in government investigations and in trials and appeals in state and federal courts across the country. While at Rouse Hendricks, he also served as a constitutional law instructor at the Kansas State Penitentiary in Lansing, Kan. After graduating from Cornell Law School, Lucas served as a clerk to the Hon. Duane Benton of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 8th Circuit. His research interests include corporate and financial governance and regulation; corporate criminal liability and sentencing; contracts; and conflict of laws. Lucas will teach Contracts and Business Associations at KU.

So yes he is or was a professor of some sort. This topic is really much ado about nothing. Let KU keep him KC does not need him.

  3. ^^^^^^ No, he's not a professor of any sort. He is a lecturer. That is a good job but it is NOT a professor. His supporters should not claim that he is something he is NOT.

  4. No tenure track for sure. That's a very big difference even among the professors.

It's a certification, the words do matter.

  5. He's still got my vote. A lot smarter than the rest of the candidates.

  6. So what does the Visiting Assistant Professor mean then, I just looked and that's a legit KU web page also. So one or the other isn't right.

  7. Maybe he was a professor and isn't now and his paperwork not updated but regardless rather ignorant thing to fucking argue about. I mean honestly outside of maybe three people, who gives a flying fuck. The whole lot running for Mayor outside of Clay are all a bunch of crooks as their track records show.

  8. His title should be “ Lying Faggot Affirmative Action Drunk Driver”.

  9. Lucas was a lecturer, not a professor, and not on tenure track. It's still a great job for him because he is in love with the sound of his own voice. The guy doesn't speak in run-on sentences, he speaks in run-on paragraphs. And he asks questions in such convoluted fashion he couldn't answer them himself if he tried. He's not 1/2 as smart as he thinks he is and he's about 25% as smart as his supporters on this page and elsewhere think he is. He also has sponsored no meaningful legislation and has walked behind Jermaine Reed on 18th and Vine, taking second-hand smoke credit for the work done (more money wasted) in that district. Lucas has not distinguished himself as a lawyer, a lecturer, or a councilman and he will be a less than distinguished mayor.

  10. There is a extensive description of university professors on wikipedia, here is an excerpt of what it says: PS Im sure if Quinten was a white guy this subject would have never been mentioned.

    Other designations
For non-tenure track teaching positions in the US, academic institutions use a wide array of different job titles depending on if the position is temporary or permanent, if the work is full-time or part-time, and numerous other factors. Adding to the confusion over the formal names of non-tenure track positions, in almost every case the common-noun descriptor "professor" is used informally for people who teach at a college or university, regardless of their formal job title, and the terms are often loosely interchanged by faculty and administrators. For example, US President Barack Obama is commonly referred to as having been a professor of law at the University of Chicago, when in fact he formally held the title of senior lecturer, causing some controversy during the 2008 US Presidential Election. The faculty of the University of Chicago Law School eventually published a statement noting that it is common for lecturers to be referred to as professors, and that they support the use of the term professor to describe Obama's role with the university.[15]

    Lecturer / instructor
"Lecturers" and "Instructors" in the US can work full-time or part-time and may be referred to as "professor" by their classes. At some institutions, they teach as their primary purpose, but they can also serve on academic committees. Since these positions are usually non-tenure track, they often do not involve a research or publishing requirement, although many of these professors do publish, research, and consult. Alternatively, at US medical colleges, the title "Instructor" can be given to someone who is full-time faculty and who may conduct research with no teaching obligation. These appointments can be tenure-track in some universities.

    ^^^ Bullshit.

Clay lives in Virginia and he constantly gets shit about it. If you're gonna run for mayor, you will get questions.

Stop being a snowflake bitch. The question was asked and answered.

  12. What’s with these lying koloreds? They need to admit they’re diversity hires more than anything, you know, the kind of hires you have to make not because they earned it, because they be black and “quota’s” have to be filled, god I miss the days of when you had to earn the job and title, now you have to give jobs to people not because they earned but because they’re black or queer and in this case both.

  13. Before his decision to dabble in KCMO politics he was an Assistant Professor (non tenured) who was on track to be granted tenure.

It is the policy of KU to hire these biglaw washouts in order to bump up the amount of people who get biglaw jobs. Most law schools hire people who were prominent clerks to federal judges for tenure track jobs.

And colloquially if you are a professor and have a nickname you are a true professor. His was/is "Squidward". (The Dean is Dean Cheese like in Old School)

  14. To follow on 11:29, at many schools, the position would be referred to as "Adjunct Professor." This is much ado about nothing.

  15. The situation cries out for a Quinton Lucas drinking game. Puff up your resume? Take a shot. Pander to muslims? Two shots. Fail to address the city's downward spiral of crime, misguided spending, and scandal? Well...

Best part: Professor Drunky can play along!

  16. Did any of you idiots go to college? All instructors at universities are called "Professor X" in salutation, and 'professor' is a non-proper noun. Additionally, their are official titles are part of your job description which are proper nouns (Assistant, Associate, and Full Professor are the rankings). So, yes, it is EXTREMELY COMMON PRACTICE to call anyone who teaches at a university a professor. The ranking is another level that is more about the specifics of the job, discipline, and actual duties. So shut up and critique his policies, morons. All of you Trump supporters who suddenly are concerned that someone might be lying are such hypocrites.

  17. "He's a lot smarter than the other candidates" is a really low bar. And it doesn't matter whether he is a lecturer or a professor or a ditch digger, his racial grievance platform should disqualify him from consideration.

  18. Hey KC... vote for Lucas is a vote for the continued support if his looting of funds for his 3rd district which could be used for police, roads, and basic city services. Lucas is a fast talking con-artist.
