KC TENANTS RESPOND TO MAYOR’S STATE OF THE CITY

KANSAS CITY, MO— KC Tenants in Action, a new organization led by a multiracial base of tenants in Kansas City, responded to Mayor Sly James State of the City address this evening. After the Mayor’s speech, KC Tenants staged a response outside the venue at Rockhurst University. KC Tenants in action announced the launch of their voter guide, each participant identified as a tenant voter, and they challenged every candidate to come to them with a 100 day plan to act on housing if elected.

“We have heard from Mayor Sly James for two hours about the state of the city. The Kansas City that Mayor James describes is NOT the Kansas City that we live in. Mayor James talks about a renaissance in Kansas City during his term in office. Renaissance for whom? We want to tell you about the State of OUR city,” said Brynne Musser, a grassroots leader with KC Tenants.

“42 evictions are filed per day in Jackson County. Landlords win 99.8% of evictions in court. Race is the biggest predictor of whether or not you’ll be evicted in Kansas City. Under Mayor Sly James 75,102 evictions have been filed in Kansas City. Seventy. Five. Thousand. One. Hundred. and Two. That’s the state of OUR city, and that ain’t right,” said Becky Amezcua, a grassroots leader with KC Tenants.

“Over 1,798 people experience homelessness in Kansas City on a given night. And those are just the people on street. Those numbers don’t account for the thousands of us who are between shelters and hotels, cars and friends’ couches. Many more of us are invisible to KC. That’s the state of OUR city, said Tonya Bowman, a grassroots leader with KC Tenants.

“Our families are being uprooted and moved further from schools, jobs, and transportation as our neighborhoods gentrify. Even worse, Kansas City lures developers to downtown and our neighborhoods with tax breaks that we the people pay for and that cost our schools money that we don’t have to spend. These decisions are made behind closed doors, and through barely-secret pay-to-play deals. That’s the state of OUR city,” said Steven Tyler, a grassroots leader with KC Tenants.

“Our city is being bought and sold by out-of-state investors and private equity outfits based in New York, California, and even China,” said Christian Wade, a grassroots leader with KC Tenants, “These speculators are horrible neighbors, bad landlords, and-along with luxury developers downtown-they falsely inflate prices and sit on vacant properties. And then we give them tax write offs that cost Kansas City hundreds of millions of dollars. That’s the state of OUR city.”

Elyshya Miller, a grassroots leader with KC Tenants, said, “We face an undeniable moral crisis. The state of OUR city? It’s evicted. It’s homeless. It’s displaced. It’s discarded. It’s SOLD OUT. But it’s also FED UP. It’s defiant. It’s ORGANIZING FOR CHANGE.”

“We can’t wait another eight years. We can’t wait until another 75 THOUSAND of us KC Tenants are evicted. Guess what? We have a plan,” said Brett Clement, a grassroots leader with KC Tenants, “In the last month, KC Tenants has spoken with over 9000 potential voters in Kansas City. On Saturday we are having a mass canvass. We will knock doors all over the city, talking to another 3000 voters at least. I’ll be voting as a tenant, using the KC Tenants in Action voter guide, which is available on our website and written by regular people who are concerned with housing in Kansas City.”

  2. So...you dont pay rent and get evicted then cry injustice. Got it. Go ahead progressives....put the boot to the neck of homeowners who rent houses out and see what happens.

You know what we need in KC? More useless bike lines.

  3. I am all for fair housing but tenants create a lot of their own problems. I’m not sure if I support this group or not. What’s clear is that tenants are often the problem and not the solution. I have a neighbor right now in a 4-bedroom house that they’ve decided to use as a rooming house. Of course, no cooperation from the landlord and the tenants continue to move people into the property. This is a neighborhood; not a party hall. You want to live in group home accommodations then live in one and not a house. Property owners deserve the quiet enjoyment of property, they paid for, continue to pay taxes on only to be put off by nuisance tenants. Fucking buy a house and you’ll appreciate things much better. Renters are destructive leaches and ruin neighborhoods.

  6. Some people can't afford the rent hike. One tenant had their rent raised 80% and could not pay so they had to move farther away. That is bullshit and you know it.

  7. 10:17 is correct dipshit, too many people wanting something for nothing. If you want to bitch about rent then don’t demand something the gubmint won’t pay for, you don’t deserve the ritz when living off the taxpayer you dumb bitch. Just think, socialism wiould be ten times worse, you don’t get a say so with that system.

  10. Ocasio-Cortez will find nice places for people to live whether they want to work or not. She has really nice tits, too.

  11. 11:13 How is this wrong? An 80% rent hike is ridiculous. When I had an entry-level career position, I had to move three times because the homeowner raised the rent so high that I couldn't afford to live there. You're probably a homeowner so this doesn't affect you. If you are a renter, have some empathy for your fellow human.

  16. The people who don't understand the affordable housing debate are usually shitty old people who live on the outskirts of town in little shacks that nobody would ever buy. Sorry Cletus, we can't all have your low ambitions.

  18. It's hard to think of one accomplishment from Mayor Sly James that doesn't involve raising taxes, borrowing money or suppressing voters. He has truly been one of the most destructive forces Kansas City has ever endured.

  19. After reading this article I can see where this thing goes both ways. Sly has been kissing the developers butts and has been the most destructive mayor KC has ever seen. Christian Wade has a good point, one of those old mansions in Northeast on Gladstone Blvd is owned by a shady individual from CA and it was the house that had the meth lab in it. The other side is, a lot of people destroy properties and don't pay their rent which causes landlords to raise rent or evict. Things are definitely a mess and Sly was not any help to this city.

  20. What makes anyone think Jolie will be any better? All her energy is directed to Lesbos and the airport.

Jolie and Lucas were Sly's enablers in the Council. This trio was destructive to the City.

  22. Sly is a Republican. Don't even get on the violent crime issues in the city.

  23. This is what those gender studies degrees are good for. Unable to pay rent so they join the KC tenants group to bitch about not being able to pay rent.
