TKC EXCLUSIVE!!! COUNCIL MAJORITY READY TO RULE KANSAS CITY VOTER PETITION TO SAVE THE PASEO INVALID!!!
Without question, the decision to rename The Paseo was pushed forward despite neighborhood objections and without a vote that was promised by supporters of the MLK switcheroo.
However, by way of accelerated emergency ordinance the decision was approved and now many MLK BLVD signs are already hanging above the iconic local street.
The petition response wasn't very swift but newbie activist neighbors have done a nice job in getting a few friendly headlines which FAIL to examine the challenges confronted by their effort.
First the good news for these crusaders:
Northeast News: Save the Paseo Petitioners officially hit the streets
Fox4: Petition to keep The Paseo gains hundreds of signatures despite city council vote
Now, the EXCLUSIVE TKC REALITY CHECK . . .
BEHIND THE SCENES A COUNCIL MAJORITY HAS ALREADY DECIDED TO RULE THIS PETITION INVALID AND KILL IT ONCE AND FOR ALL!!!
How do they plan to do it?
They'll be holding these activists accountable to the same rules eschewed in the MLK rename.
Ironic. Don'tcha think?
Here's the word from a KICK-ASS CITY HALL INSIDER:
"The petitioners don't have an adequate funding mechanism. We're already replacing signs as we speak. There's also the subject of funding for naming rights that is discretionary and very well hidden.
Even if the petitioners amend and allot for the costs of replacing the new signs. They don't even know the real budget for MLK Blvd rename so their funding plan would be incomplete. The punchline is that the ordinance was drafted so that the some of the discretionary cash paid out isn't enough to require an additional council vote or disclosure until next fiscal year. Then maybe a carefully worded sunshine request might be able to find it. If they're lucky. By that time the change over to MLK Blvd will be complete.
The petition will never see the light of day under the current council and by they time the new council takes office, it'll be too late. There simply isn't any will on the 26th floor to revisit this issue and the easiest thing to do is ignore this small group of people and however many suckers they've conned into signing on to their vanity project."
That's harsh but let's not forget that transit activist Clay Chastain had his citywide vote THROWN OUT because of the funding mechanism issue. SmartKC also had a landslide citywide vote regarding streetcar expansion DISMISSED by toy train supporters because of a smallish debate over cash.
The point here . . .
OVER THE PAST 8 YEARS MAYOR & COUNCIL HAVE IGNORED ANY VOTE OR PETITION THEY DON'T LIKE . . . SAVE THE PASEO WILL NOT BE THE EXCEPTION ACCORDING TO INSIDERS!!!
Whilst TKC loves grassroots activism, it's important to understand the reality of the situation.
Unless petitioners are willing to go to court NOW to stop MLK signs from replacing old school Paseo street markers . . . Their cause it lost.
A legal battle is always expensive and defending the legacy of MLK would attract some of the very best civil rights lawyers in KC and across the nation.
Citizen Initiative Petitions are dependent on good will from elected officials and on this issue one fact is overlooked by hopeful volunteers:
THE CITY COUNCIL WILL NEVER VOTE TO REMOVE MLK BLVD SIGNS ALREADY INSTALLED!!! VOTING TO REMOVE MLK BLVD WOULD BE POLITICAL SUICIDE FOR ANY KANSAS CITY POLITICO!!!
Sadly, none of the REAL LIFE MECHANICS OF CITY HALL BIZ has been reported by newsies who want to encourage petitioners but have kept these crusaders and the electorate in the dark regarding the nasty way 12th & Oak really works.
Developing . . .
That's a shame. I really liked how they were going about it. They had a good point with the neighborhood approval requirement in the charter. I guess nobody told them that an ordinance with an accelerated effective date also invalidates that requirement.
ReplyDeleteTell these folks to get the hell away from the taco joint. Don't bother people during taco week. NEVER!
DeleteIs there a go fund me where i can donate to their cause. It seems like this one is going to court.
DeleteDon't let "insiders" scare you. The petitioners are doing the right thing. If they are shut out by the current council, maybe they should ask new candidates how they fell about the issue.
ReplyDelete^^^ Fantastic advice. If you don't like one lie, go ask for another. Brilliant work there Tex.
DeleteCalm down people this is all just another manipulative attempt to stir up the blacks before the next mayor council election. You know, so the black mayoral candidate (Quinton Lucas) can drum up black voters. He wants to show the blacks he’s for them. This town is so stupid. Everyone puts their energy into renaming a street. When they should be addressing how to create jobs and turn around neighborhood. Cowtown is full of ameature politicians and a public who is willing led around by a ring in their nose.
ReplyDeleteJust don't vote for Quinton Lucas.
ReplyDeleteCity council has already voted on this. They don't like it fix it at the ballot box.

ReplyDelete9:32 Wins this one big time!
^^What does he win dummy??? Are there prizes?????
ReplyDeleteHa! 10:02 tried to pump his own post but got knocked the fuck out instead!
ReplyDeleteCivil War when?
ReplyDeleteif 31st street, Independence Ave, or Truman Rd, was changed to GW Carver blvd, would there be fees to use his name?
ReplyDelete^^I don't know. Why are you asking dumb questions here. Did you research it before you posted this slop? Why not?
ReplyDelete^^^ who's the genderless bitch.
ReplyDeleteThe petitioners need to let it go. The deed is done. They lost.
ReplyDeleteCharlie Parker's old school house was located in Westport on the little vacant lot acoss the street from the Vietnam memorial. There is a little plaque on the stone all wall, covered in bird shit. Burned down by fire in 1969, no doubt by the Irish.
ReplyDelete^^OK? Go sell that shit elsewhere turd. You're boring as fuck!
ReplyDeleteYou can name the street anything you want but it will still be the paseo, just like the paseo bridge, nobody calls is Bond bridge!
ReplyDeleteTrue story. It is technically the Dr Jeremiah Cameron Park, Dr. Jeremiah Cameron (1919-2008).
ReplyDeletePlaque not on wall but a low elevation natural rock cropping on the North side.
and some italians really do get upset if you bring up their mother
ReplyDelete^^Well don't do it then! Idiot!
ReplyDeleteHistoric East-side Satchel Paige ballpark is seriously eroding to the point it's unsafe. It is used for inner city sports. However, the city can't afford to repair it, with MLK signage needing financed.
ReplyDeleteOne can still drive along (Paseo) MLK regardless of fake name. However, kids cannot play ball due to unsafe condition of this once proud facility. Not enough glitz and media appeal for the fake revs, Slie and council members, I guess.
Nothing about this street renaming has been above board and all facts/costs made available to the public. Sure sign the petitions and fight it but a simpler way would be to not vote for anyone running for reelection. Taking them all out of office will send the real wake up call that is needed.
ReplyDeleteSame with the single-terminal shenanigans and the TooT Toy Train looting. And, now it's the Pre-K clusterf*©k!!!
DeleteS'liar, on TV 4 noon news less than an hour ago, did his duck-lipped, double-speak, dance-a-jig around most queries for that "interview" with Vasos. Mayor Mensa wouldn't provide names of administrators and such for his grand pyramid, er, "teach the tots" scheme. This evening and Thursday evening he's hauling along some "educator" lady from Denver to try to help him talk up the bigly success of that pre-K program. Fox 4 actually put out Mr. Bedel's and the NAACP's opposition statements. They were met with the canned quips Sly had recited elsewhere.
12:28, So sad. And, bad. But, typical for this City of Malfunctioning Fountains---Dodge the Bullets & Potholes on Miles & Miles of Wide Boulevards---Taxed Into Eternity Tinseltown---Weekly Trash Pickups Kicked to the Curb---& more!
ReplyDeleteNothing quite like ignoring the city charter and sticking your fingers in residents' eyes just prior to the mayoral primary.
ReplyDeleteRemember, coming up is YOUR chance to participate and make a difference!
Hahahahaha!!
Be lucky to have a 10% turn out.
I call on the taggers of this once great city to step up and resist this evil imposition of the re-naming. I suggest that ugly lime green color would be perfect for defacement of the offending signage. Resist!
ReplyDeleteNothing to worry about just trust us
ReplyDeleteThis council did the same thing with the Street Car extension. The only difference is the way it is paid for. The street car sill be paid for by a special tax district and the general fund pays for the MLK renaming.
ReplyDeleteThis is an absolute abuse of power and these guys should be voted out of office.
As a life long Democrat, I would vote for anybody including MAGA over this group of Thugs.
ReplyDelete^^^If you really were a lifelong democrat, you would never vote MAGA. Nice try. Now go away repubtard!!!!
Delete^^^^Shut up Byron
ReplyDeleteHey 2:41, you can say what you want but this is the truth. This council would lose in a landslide to MAGA.
ReplyDelete^^^^^Look Look Look Look it's Super Dave, see he's there, no wait he's here, oh hell lookout he's everywhere.
ReplyDeleteJust had to say that before Super Dave's hater pops in again.

ReplyDeleteI don't understand what the problem is.
ReplyDeleteI'm so sick of this this mayor and this city council doing what ever they want with our money. I'll gladly sign a petition to get that name back.
ReplyDeleteIf you want to watch his stirring "I Have a Dream" address from the 1963 March on Washington, you can pay $20 to buy the DVD from an online shop under the control of his heirs.
ReplyDeleteIt's an anti gentrification tactic. Keeps the white developers and white yuppies away.
ReplyDeleteNaming it MLK will benefit the 25 million visitors we have each year by giving them a warning about staying out of the area.
ReplyDeleteI don't care what they name it, it's still the Paseo to everyone in KC except the race baiters and local pols pandering for votes. Fuck 'em.
ReplyDelete"accelerated emergency ordinance"
ReplyDeleteReally? An emergency? To rename a street?
Or just a mechanism to bypass proper procedure.
^^^^ I think you got it right the 2nd time. Sad situation Byron, they should have done it right right way.
