TKC BREAKING NEWS!!! SAVE THE PASEO PETITION SPUTTERS AND PLEADS IN VAIN FOR MORE KANSAS CITY VOTERS TO OPPOSE MLK BLVD NAME CHANGE!!!

Just as our blog community predicted . . . The petition effort to "Save The Paseo" is unlikely to meet its modest signature goal in hopes to reverse a controversial decision by City Council to change the name of an iconic Kansas City Blvd without following stringent rules from the Parks Board.

A few deets from insiders . . .

- Petitioners gathering signatures have dropped out after some push back from neighbors. There are now only two people actively collecting names and they're having a tough go of it.

- There is doubt the petition will stand up against City Council. A petition can be thrown out for just about any reason, just ask Clay Chastain about this topic -- He has filed multiple lawsuits against KCMO for petition grievances and even votes for the light rail overturned.

- To be fair, there is a lot of grassroots support for this effort in Northeast Kansas City BUT even among those neighbors -- Signing away their personal info to a public document on this controversial issue has scared more than a few people off . . .

And so . . .

PETITIONERS AGAINST MLK BLVD PLEAD WITH KANSAS CITY VOTERS TO TAKE A  STAND FOR LOCAL RULES!!!

A quick note sent our way . . .

"Voters need to do more than leave online comments. The City violated its own rules with their actions on The Paseo. This isn't about racism or hate. It's about the rule of law and holding our elected officials accountable. We feel like that is something that EVERYONE should support . . . "

KCMO public works is busy hanging the new MLK signs and the deadline on this issue is quickly approaching.

Developing . . .

  8. I’ll sign the damn thing and then prove the city harassed me afterwards and sue the city for $5,000,000, don’t worry, I’ll win!

  9. LOL "sputters." On day one? Not registered properly? Wishful thinking from a mayoral candidate or two? Your tipsters are very worried, and this is just the first day our petition is active. I have given you a lot of credit in the past, Tony, but maybe my regard has been misplaced. We only need 1800 signatures. Watch and learn what happens when you blatantly disregard your constituents, City Council. #SavethePaseo

  10. The name change only condemns the area to further decay. A beacon to all to stay away or beware if you dare enter the area. Dumb move.

  11. My gosh some of you readers are so stupid that its baffling. This is supposed to be funny, not serious. The petition effort is not sputtering at all. There is so much support that it isnt funny. There are plenty of people of all skin colors that want this name changed back, so do your research before commenting.

  16. I am a kc property owner and was raised here. I want to sign the petition against renaming the paseo. Where can I sign? There are other ways to honor Dr. Martin L. King Jr. In our city! The Paseo is so historic to our community.

I am not a Piece of Shit Racist and I care about this issue very much on 2 fronts:

    1. The City Council didn't do its due diligence and follow the Ordinance that is in place for Renaming Streets. I feel its their duty to follow the Ordinances. If they are going to change an Ordinance through a City Council Vote only that wipes out 2 of the requirements to rename a street (Parks and Recs must approve and 2/3 of the the property owners and business along the street must give their okay - neither of these were met). This is about Democracy not Race!

    2. I would love to have a MLK Blvd. I agree with the special committe that Sly James appointed on this topic to turn 63rd Street into MLK (they recommend 3, Airport Road, 63rd and The Paseo), therefore a street that crosses the racial line in our East-West city. Unfortunatley the City Council didn't even vote on 63rd Street just on The Paseo.

Personally I would love to see JC Nichols turned to MLK Blvd. to make things right by his Racist Block Busting Activities that created the East of Troost Blight.

If the City Council is to follow the Ordinance and 2/3 of the Paseo Property Owners and Businesses agree to the Name Change - then I am all on board. I as a property owner on Paseo will vote no. I love The Paseo Name. Not so much for the history but because of the The...secondarily Paseo.

There are more than 2 people collecting signatures and we are getting very close to the 1700 required. Now what the City Council will do with our Petition will be another issue that I don't have control of. But please get your facts straight. I also know of 10 others who are collecting signatures that I have met personally.

If you would like to sign the Petition I will be at the Aquarious Book Store, 3936 Broadway Saturday 10-2.
