TKC BREAKING NEWS!!! ACTIVIST AND MAYORAL CANDIDATE CLAY CHASTAIN LAUNCHING $6-MILLION DEFAMATION LAWSUIT AGAINST KANSAS CITY STAR!!!

Here's the latest word from this town's most prolific transit activist as he wages a war against the Kansas City Star amid his mayoral campaign. Checkit:

Today, Clay files multi-million dollar lawsuit against Star for smearing his public reputation right before the mayoral election.

On March 25 (a day that will live in journalistic infamy) the leadership of the Kansas City Star launched a Pearl Harbor-style attack (profile series on mayoral candidates by M. Henneberger) on the only two anti-establishment candidates in the race for mayor - "General" Lee and Clay Chastain. And that is a shame because there are many good employees that work for the Star and the Star has advocated for some good things in the community. I guess Clay brings out the worst in the Star.

Anyway, the Star depicted Lee (who is a nice man who cares about Kansas City) as a "comedy act," "booed by the crowd" and motivated by "hate." Lovely profile.

The Star depicted me as an "angry" person (which I am not), as suffering from past "depression" (which I never have), who was also "booed" and "Jeered" by the crowd (only a few booed and jeered) and was "put on City Hall's Watch List for perceived threats against Mayor Sly James" (which I have never made). An even more lovely profile.

Even Sly himself has never accused me of threatening him with violence.

But our "paper for the people," thought they would just drop a nasty little cluster bomb on Clay's back (right before the election) to blunt his rising popularity in the polls. For the same reason, KCPT censored Clay, Klein and General Lee from participating in its big mayoral debate on public television.

The Star has a 25-year history of going after Clay because he has challenged (with his petitions) not only the City's leadership, but also the Star's as well.

Lately Clay has challenged, along with others, the Star's leadership in supporting...

#1. The shady Cordish P&L Entertainment District that now annually cost taxpayers $13 million a year to subsidize,
#2. The shady streetcar election that went around the sentiment of citywide voters,
#3. The shady "Slyport" deal that was misrepresented to voters and excluded allowing the voters to vote on a plan to remodel KCI.
#4. The shady convention hotel and luxury condo sweetheart tax incentive deals for developers, and
#5. The shady way in which City Hall has ignored and trashed valid petitions from the people - including mine - and overturned my 2006 light rail election victory.

Meanwhile, under the Star and the City's leadership Kansas City has not only vaulted to the 5th most dangerous City in America but is also burdened with oppressive taxes, neglected and decaying infrastructure, high debt, high water bills, stagnant population growth and a chronic under-performing public school system. Some "momentum" that is!!

But I have a hit piece for the Star - a multi-million dollar defamation suit.

The Star can try and make you think a certain way, but it can't make you vote a certain way. Vote your conscience and for the candidate you can trust to give priority to the issues average Kansas Citians care about and who has the best leadership skills and ideas to bring back our "City Beautiful."

Vote for Clay.

Mayoral candidate, Clay Chastain.

  1. This is a tough fight. It looks like he might be representing himself. I wonder if they'll try to settle.

  3. I certainly hope Clay wins. The Star is corrupt, and there has never been anyone to take them on.

The Star doesn't have to be nice to you, & since you are running for mayor, you are now a public figure. They can say whatever they want as long as they don't lie. Calling you names isn't lying. You are not a serious candidate.

If you want to be Kansas City's Mayor, then move to Kansas City.

    1. If you want to post your ridiculous shit on here day in and day out, YOU move to KC. Not that anyone would want you here, but at least it would make more sense than inserting yourself into KC area issues that do not affect you whatsoever.

  6. I posted this in the comments on his previous threat to sue. Clay: were you or were you not placed on a watch list whether political or not, at City Hall? Yes, the journalist was making a political hit piece, yes the Star is biased, but was that particular statement untruthful? You keep saying you've never made threats, with people agreeing you've never made threats, that isn't what the Star article addressed. Let's play a basic childhood game: They said you had been placed on a watch list; true or false?

To be sure, I dislike the Star (I'm the dude who actually took MoAG action against them), I also dislike all the other candidates. But this COSTS YOU CREDIBILITY. If you're a serious candidate, address the issue and move on. Empty threats based on non-factual assertions, make your candidacy seem flippant. Get in the game or get out of KC and leave us alone.

  9. Sorry to the last blogger you are misinformed yes he was put on the watch list and file the lawsuit. In the pleadings response by the city they admitted that he never threatened the mayor so your information is incorrect. After the lawsuit against Steve Rose you would think the star would have learned their lesson about checking the sloppy an incompetent reporters who write like a third grader it's about time someone else took on the star.

  15. He can't win a libel suit. it will be thrown out immediately. Oh well. I typically like Clay but this isn't a good look. Still a much better look than whitewashing KC history by renaming historic streets or spending 3 billion on a "new" airport that will be less convenient

  17. It's just that really about clay this is about the Kansas City Star keeping up the pro quo of the establishment and their agenda. Once again the Kansas City Star has lived up to its reputation this information incompetence journalism and then you wonder why people don't read the star. To the bots who write on this blog defending the establishment is only harming themselves in the city it should be ashamed of themselves.

  18. Clay I really think that you have things wrong here. You are blaming another person for your own failures as a candidate and as an activist. Your time in the city is not well spent by trying to tear down our institutions. At one time you were a good petitioner who sought to do the city a Surface by Reviving certain parts of it, but that time has passed. Now your agenda involves nothing but tearing down what we have built and looking to stop the momentum that has push the city well past your era. There simply isn't any place for you anymore in Kansas City and you're obviously upset about it. Don't blame the star for that blame yourself. I encourage you to get help but you won't find it in this kind of lawsuit or attacking people who point out that your Civic activism would be better served in a place where you live full-time.

This is so phony baloney it's not even funny. He's not even suing the right entity. Even Tony's sharp readers figured THAT one out:

"The Kansas City Star is actually owned by Cypress Media, which itself is a subsidiary of The McClatchy Company of California. I thought that was odd, so I took a second look. Turns out that "Kansas City Star" is a fictitious (ahem, FAKE?) business name registered in Missouri."

So good luck with your lawsuit against a fictitious business.

  21. I'm curious, what does Chastain do for a living? If he's got this many vacation days to blow on a quixotic campaign for mayor, surely he works for the federal government.

  24. To cut to the chase of this "issue":
The Star probably couldn't come up with $6 million if they had to.
Clay really doesn't have a public reputation to "smear".
And now back to the center ring of the circus of the KCMO mayoral election.
Who's that big guy in the clown suit?
    Hahahahahaha!!

This blog isn't just about Kansas City. There is no residency requirement to participate. I'm not running for mayor of Kansas City, which does have a residency requirement.

I wouldn't want to live there. After all, you live there.

  27. I don't know whether Clay is ever been on an "watch list" but I do know that I was at City Hall in 2015 when he arrived to file for Mayor (probably just having flown in from his actual home in Virginia for the event).

I was embarrassed to see him held at security until other security officers could be brought in to escort him to the City Clerk's office to file for Mayor of the city. It was an embarrassment – and I don't just mean for Chastain. It was an absolute embarrassment for the city that someone who – while occasionally eccentric in the "let's build gondolas" sense of eccentric – was being treated as if he were a serious physical threat to anyone.

Now I think the level of security that we have at City Hall is an absurd left-over from post-9/11 paranoia and way too much Homeland Security Money! I think that Thomas Jefferson would be spinning in his grave if he could see elected officials and public employees cowering behind metal detectors. Just going to a City Council meeting must be for the average citizen an unnecessarily intimidating exercise. But what was done to Chastain in 2015 had a hard edge of political intimidation attached to it. It was the sort of bullying that Third World dictators put their political opponents through – just to show that they can.

I don't know that The Star owes Clay any money, but I know the city certainly owed him an apology for its 2015 behavior

    1. Exactly right Phil. City hall security theatre is an insult. And ever walk into federal bldg? Those six or eight federal security bureaucrats manning the metal detector positively growl at you.

In re the star column and libel suit, the article kind of did say he had depression/mental illness. Maybe that is actionable if done w malice ... But clay should just do what 99% of the public does: ignore the star.
      Thanks,

  29. Hope this is the nail in the Star’s coffin.
People across the area hate the Star and the rest could care less what they print.
Old ladies all over the area pay over $1,000 a year for what most get for free- any teen get past their paywall- but fact is no one hardly reads it... lost their influence years ago...editorial board whores expense dollars and any corporate raiders will trim that expense and put the pseudo brainiacs on the street.
So here’s hoping gets the Star to cough up $6 million and forced them to sell itself to pay the bill. What a lying pack of left leaning liberals who can’t wait to kiss any Smollett felon with adoration and praise! Their demise won’t come soon enough.

    Go Clay Go!!

GoKC which is Chris Hernandez who is the communication director for City Hall under slime James. Why who writes vile things on this block I am never seen you ever write one nice thing about anybody.is it because you have so much rage and hate inside you and you can't stand that actually people tell the truth and are honest or is it just because you're afraid of your boss Sly James being as little toady I bet you you shine his shoes every morning. Why don't you be a man for what and write some positive things or you just can't that. All I can say is your days are numbered in City Hall the unemployment line is your future.
