Mayor Sly Pushing Pre-K Sales Tax In Vain

Round-up of what we already know . . . NOBODY who isn't getting paid is supporting the Pre-K sales tax effort but the mayor's stubbornness is tarnishing his legacy that was built on developer cash and not concern for students. Take a look:

The school districts and most mayoral candidates oppose Sly's pre-K sales tax, but the mayor won't back down

In a week, Kansas City voters will decide if the city should impose a 3/8-cent sales tax to help fund high-quality education for Kansas City children the year before they enter kindergarten. Mayor Sly James is behind this pre-K tax proposal, and he's been out stumping hard for it.

  1. It's a terrible idea put forward by someone who obviously knows very little about public policy, but I wouldn't be on it losing at the polls.
The post makes the point that only people getting paid to support the tax do so, but that's pretty much the only folks who actually vote in KCMO elections.
Really bad ideas plus voter apathy are the highlights of local government in the big town.
    Frosty.

  3. Would be nice if Slie would state what many others have identified as the scam in this plan. The schools will only get 20 to 25% of the funds for the first 3 years. Nothing has been stated as to what the rest of the money will be skimmed off for.

  4. This is Sly trying to create employment for his staff and friends. They will be the board running the Pre-K program. Wake up KC.. Another Sly slight of hand.

  5. The city government would have control of the money and the education. The same city government that can’t fix a fucking pothole.

  7. I thought the vote for the 20 year extension of the Earnings Tax would go down in flames 3 years ago. I could not believe it when I woke up the next morning to see voters had given fat Sly another 20 year slush fund.

I THEREFORE HAVE NO CONFIDENCE THAT THE VERY LIMITED NUMBER OF KC RESIDENTS WHO GET OF THEIR ASS TO VOTE CARE ENOUGH TO BE INFORMED ABOUT CITY ISSUES. THEY MAY WELL APPROVE ANOTHER (SLUSH) TAX.

ON THE OTHER HAND, I ADMIT VOTING SOMETIMES SEEMS USELESS WHEN THE POWERS IGNORE THE VOTING RESULTS AS PER THE TOY TRAIN DEBACLE.
