Kansas archbishop responds to criticism over school not enrolling child

KANSAS CITY, Kansas - Archbishop Joseph F. Naumann of Kansas City wrote his March 15 column in The Leaven, the archdiocesan newspaper, about a Catholic school's decision not to enroll the child of a non-Catholic same-sex married couple, noting the issue has garnered local and national media attention.

  1. I can’t believe the parents would want their child to go to school there. Do they just want to start trouble or what? Can’t they send their child to a school that approves of the sin of homosexuality?

No, they've been very honest. Gay marriage is the law of the land. Get over it.

    You've been hateful.

Homosexuality is not a sin (in fact there is no such thing as a sin.)

A man who lived two thousand years ago (& lied about meeting Jesus on the Road to Damascus) said something negative about it in a letter he wrote to some Jewish heretics, & now it's magically the Word of God.

Jesus said, "I give you a new commandment, that you love one another."

Why is what Paul said more important than what Jesus said?

  6. I talked to God, and it said he didn't care. He was fine with enrolling the kid. There you have it. The word of the lord.

  7. I think it's a mistake to not enroll the child. You can't punish a child for the sins of the parents.

    1) I know tons of non catholics that go to catholic schools here in KC. The one in Leawood enrolls the children of non practicing ethnic muslims.

    2) If this kid has 'bad' parents wouldn't having them in Catholic school teaching them Catholic values be better for the kid?

  11. ^^^Not taxed. Got it. No such thing as private dope. If you're not taxed on the land, building or assests are most churches are or receive special exemptions from due levies and taxes, then you're really not "private" Not hard to fathom dope. Start paying your fucking taxes then, you mandate who gets in or not. Until then, go fuck yourself.

And the many other faith based charities of this nation designate who is in or out on getting shares of their funds. Are you equal opportunity bashing on Jews, LDS, et al, or just Catholic entities? Don't think for a minute that those sums of gubmint taxes exempted for these philanthropic organizations outpaces the values of goods and services generously provided. Feeding, clothing, sheltering, healing, educating, and advocating for the low-income and underserved, especially children, isn't going to be accomplished by market forces alone.

  12. One can read the four Gospels from beginning to end and find absolutely no condemnation from Jesus of homosexuality – or any other kind of sexual activity (except, perhaps, adultery). He does condemn hypocrisy, however so criticism of the sexual behavior of others by a Catholic leader does seem a bit ironic, given the headlines.

Of course the Catholic Church is always based its power on the ability to define what is and is not acceptable sexual behavior. Also ironic not just because of today's headlines but because of the actual behavior of prelates and popes as well as parish priests over the centuries. But it was an important power base: the ability to determine who could and could not get a divorce/annulment was a powerful and often profitable power to have over the rich and noble. That is still the case today, in the system where the well-connected are often able to get annulments of long-term marriages with multiple children. But the point has always been less about dogma than about power. And money. Those gold vestments don't pay for themselves.

There are really two Catholic churches: the church of the bishops and the Church of the nuns. The bishops give weighty pronouncements and get to go to dinner at private clubs. The nuns teach and comfort God's children – and get to go to heaven.
