JOCO United Leader Launches Lawsuit Overland Park & Golden Ghetto Over Transparency After Police Shot Suicidal Teen

Really great round-up report worth a read on the topic of rising local government activism by a community group and growing tensions betwixt community vs. authorities regarding this tragic case. Checkit:

Overland Park man sues city, Johnson Co. DA over records about deadly police shooting of teenage boy

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -- On Wednesday, an Overland Park citizen asked a judge to force the city and Johnson County district attorney to release records related to the night a police officer shot and killed 17-year-old John Albers. A dispute over what the city and district attorney have the right to hold back from the public is at the heart of lawsuit.

  1. Once that kid accelerated in an attempt to leave the property he was a danger to others. The police did their job. Civil suite should be thrown out of court. The family should face reality.

  3. If you are suicidal and try very hard to back your van over a cop with gun drawn, you get your request: suicide by cop. I feel for the parents but it is not the OP taxpayer’s fault.

  5. I’m going to be sarcastic. Just think if he was black the cop would have been a hero.

  7. I am not involved in this at all as I am not a family member or a policeman or an OP resident and definitely not part of JOCO United.
I think the JOCO United and the family member who is filing this suit is wrong. The young man was suicidal and wanted to die. His parents left him home alone that evening, so how much did his family really care then? In a way I feel like they participated in his actions. I don't think this should go forward, the court should reject this suit.
I feel for the mom and dad but it is over a year ago now and time to get counseling to get over his death. He is not coming back.
He did what he wanted to do and got the result he wanted.

  8. Anyone saying this was suicide by cop isn't thinking it through. If he wanted to commit suicide by cop he would have walked out the front door with a weapon. He was backing a car out of the garage, and likely didn't even know the cops were there because they hadn't announced their presence yet. If you read the complaint in the case for damages (which is over by the way, and has been settled -- the case in the article is about trying to have access to records, not about getting money), you would see that the evidence showed that the boy was shot from behind. He very well may have been shot before he even knew the cops were there. The cop completely screwed this up. He shot at someone backing out of a garage, not at a person speeding down the street at people. That's why OP already paid the family $2.3 million.

  9. Also, the true acceleration started after the cop shot the driver. Prior to being shot, the driver was slowly backing out of the garage. Try to think how you would react if you were backing out of a garage and all of a sudden got shot. At least know the facts before you say the kid tried to accelerate off the property.

  10. Assisted suicide is illegal. Charge the cop with that.

  11. 11:19 a motor vehicle is every bit a dangerous weapon as a firearm and much more accessible to a troubled person.

It was a good shoot, the haters need to get over it.
