Possibly a moment of redemption (and great PR) after this 12th & Oak group dumped some bleach on hobo food.
More importantly, the push back against the inevitable consequences of the rental inspection fee represents an election season alliance with Kansas City renter's rights group who are advocating against cost of living increases targeting po'folk.
Unfortunately, because activists don't care about economics . . . This defense of low-income residents will most likely serve to spike middle-class rents to an even greater degree . . . Because there is nothing "FAIR" about capitalism or housing.

KC Health Department blocks landlord from charging illegal fee
Renters in Kansas City are thanking social media and the city's Health Department for stopping a landlord from charging an illegal fee.In a letter Thursday to residents at four properties, Landmark Realty said they were "passing on" an annual $20 fee for Kansas City's new Healthy Homes Rental Inspection Program.
ReplyDeleteSo in other words the city wants the landlords to give these people something for nothing? BS. If you put hundreds or thousands into your building you need to rescue that money back. We all know the place will have wear and tear that they are making the landlord eat?
That kind of dictatorship is communism.
This fiasco is just getting started.
ReplyDeleteSo it's "illegal" for landlords to pass on increased costs and fees? Then I assume the city will also come down on the airlines when they raise gate fees and/or ticket prices to cover the cost of the new KCI.
ReplyDeletePassing on fees to customers is not illegal. Once again the Health Department doesn't know what it's talking about. Any regulation saying this fee is illegal has no understanding of consumer protection law. I only hope that a lawyer takes city hall to court and makes a small fortune.
ReplyDeleteRather then do the right thing the city has turned this whole thing, the original petition created by a couple people into a revenue strip mining scheme. A revenue strip mining gestapo.
ReplyDelete^^^^ Excellent point. This is the city's screw up, not fault of people fighting for tenant rights.
ReplyDelete^^^Under the new regulation, asking tenants to reimburse landlords for the fee is explicitly defined to be retaliation (don't ask me for what) and illegal. However, initial and annual fees do represent costs to the landlord and no doubt will be factored into rent increase analyses.
ReplyDeleteThe City somehow does not get that making a commodity or service more expensive will result in there being less of it, and that if demand for same is unchanged, the cost will rise. The City Council must be composed of idiots, and no improvement is in sight.
@11:14am
ReplyDelete“Just increasing rents based on that ordinance is retaliation,” Lucas tells The Pitch. “I would be happy to litigate that on behalf of all the tenants in Kansas City, Missouri, because it’s not right.
Raghuveer (KC Tenants) says she hopes to see a statewide move toward rent control, which would also prevent landlords from being able to raise rents to make up for costs of programs like Healthy Homes.
ReplyDeleteROFLMAO oh man
Weez going to teach you landlord bastards a lesson or two!
ReplyDeleteQuinton Lucas won't be in Kansas City 5 minutes after he loses the election. Guy already had his bags packed.
ReplyDeleteThe Dutch have made it illegal to buy a house for the sole purpose of renting it.
ReplyDeleteAlso, you may not resell the house for at least six months.
Once again, if you want to see how sane adults do things, you must look to Europe.
Not to mention, health care, education, taxes & guns.
You have no idea of what either a sane person or an adult does.
DeleteIf you've read and sutdied the new "regulations" it's pretty obvious the city drew up this up with zero input from anyone so your basically fucked if your in the rental game.
ReplyDelete11:41 AM
ReplyDeleteSo then how come you not living in Europe?
Once again bLIEron is talking out his blind ass, it’s none of your business what happens in killa shitty, besides, what do you care, you’re living Scott free off the taxpayers backs, we should take your ass to court for because I’m sure they’ve been giving you increases and I didn’t get any notification they were doing it. Poor pitiful bLIEron. Sad.
ReplyDeleteEverybody wants free rent. At some point the system can't support all of the deadbeats. Sorry.
ReplyDelete^^^Nobody wants free rent but your building didn’t magically appreciate in value because a toy train runs by it or the city adds a bicycle lane out front.
ReplyDeletethe rents high cuz stupid fucks dont know what shits worth, overpaying for property then raising rent. No apartment should be more than $500 a month
ReplyDeleteFree Rent for All!
ReplyDeleteByron is a lying, thieving pussy.
ReplyDeleteIf you rent property, you are a loser and deserved what you get.
ReplyDelete^^^Not necessarily. Some people rent to save on maintenance cost and property taxes. Homeowners still pay insurance, upkeep and property taxes and now can’t deduct that much interest. Yes the house has value, but so does renting.
ReplyDelete@2:30 - Do you really walk around all day with STUPID on your T-shirt? No apartment should be more than $500 a month?????? You have no idea about the value of property or even a dollar, oh wait, you don't know how to actually earn a dollar. You believe to much of the crap Occasional-Cortez is spewing. What a Whack-job.
ReplyDeleteThe more you regulate Rental property will only decrease the availability of "affordable housing".
