Southwest's maintenance problems costing it millions a week, CEO says
Southwest Airlines' CEO Gary Kelly says the airline is losing millions of dollars a week due to planes grounded amid a dispute with its mechanics. The airline sued its mechanics' union last week in federal court in Dallas, alleging it was encouraging workers to write up minor issues to ground planes.
How did American Airlines and the overhaul base agreement work out?
ReplyDeleteIn the 1960's, TWA threatened to move out of KC unless the new airport was located at MCI, their maintenance facility. KC caved, and TWA move out anyway. KC was not even their hub in the mid 70's. The author asks a very valid question. Who will pay if Southwest isn't here. And who would buy the airport bonds if the repayment was dependent solely on companies like Southwest Airlines? Dig deep folks. It's coming.

So, as usual Tony, you take a false premise and ask your sucker's to run with it.
^^^ I heard Braniff did pretty well too before they went tits up.
ReplyDeleteBetter question: Is Southwest too big to fail?
ReplyDeleteGo ask TWA.
THERE WON'T BE ANY AIRLINES AFTER THE GREEN NEW DEAL!
ReplyDeleteBITCHES.
Southwest is going to soak in some money when it gets its start up of flights to Hawaii. Possibly negotiate for a hub out in Calif. and leave KCI.
ReplyDelete^^^Except they won’t, and you have absolutely no Idea what the fuck you’re talking about. A hub in California for an airline that flies all over the country? Sorta defeats the purpose of a hub doesn’t it? Have you always been this retarded or did you have a serious brain injury?
DeleteYeah let's put a hub on a coast. That way when I want to go to Pittsburgh, I can fly from KC to Los Angeles and then to Pittsburgh!
DeleteJesus, you people are stupid.
The airlines are not on the hook for this boondoggle, the citizens of KC are. What are the chances of a healthy, thriving, airline industry for the next 30 years?
ReplyDelete@6:00pm
ReplyDeleteAs usual, a closer look at the latest over-hyped "announcement" about Southwest flying our of KCI for Hawaii.
The flight from KC lands in Oakland, which many already do.
And you change planes to fly to Hawaii.
There are already many dozens of flights from LAX, SFO, Portland, and Seattle with similar connecting flights.
Just the latest fake hyped up story breathlessly repeated by the local television "news" readers.
How are the trips to Iceland doing?
Are we Heathrow yet?
@6:45 Look in the mirror.
ReplyDeleteSouthwest doesn't do hubs. They are decentralized and fly point to point, unlike the big legacy carriers American, United and Delta.
ReplyDeleteThey are the largest airline here and have nearly 50% of the KC market. They aren't leaving.
They are also extremely profitable. Have been for decades while other carriers were going bankrupt or consolidating.
There are plenty of reasons to not like the airport plans without making shit up. You lose credibility.
So that’s who got the 90 million huh?
ReplyDeleteSince you asked about Iceland flights, they went very well. From KC business journal last September:
ReplyDeleteKansas City International Airport's first nonstop transatlantic flight service is nearing the end of its first season — and it's been a good run.
Monthly traffic reports from the airport (Code: MCI) show Icelandair has flown 3,843 passengers during the first two-plus months since its inaugural flight May 26 through July 31, according to the latest data available.
The seasonal service, expected to complete its last flights at the end of September, has been about 82 percent full during its first 29 outbound flights.
Justin Meyer, deputy director of marketing and air service for the Kansas City Aviation Department, said he is scheduled to meet with executives from Icelandair this month to confirm the airline's schedule in 2019. Currently, the airlines is selling flights from Kansas City for 2019 with an identical service pattern to this year. However, Meyer said it's possible that the airline will increase its flight frequency or that the season will be expanded beyond its current run of late May to the end of September.
5:38 TWA played a big role in creating the current airport, TWA decided to go elsewhere and left behind concrete terminals and gates that do not need to be rebuilt in the interest of an edgemore bonanza fund that causes bdegets to decrease. Even if southwest did not go under in 7-30yrs their interest in the airport are minimal. SW needs to keep the market not be beholden to the city officials they do not really speak with.
ReplyDeletebdegets signifies the health & priorities of the city budgets.
ReplyDeleteLeave it to the union turds to try to fuck up a good company. Soutwest should just hire outside contract maintenance and say fuck the union. Anyone that thinks southwest is leaving MCI doesn't fly from KC much. It's the busiest airline there. Still think the KCMO residents will get left holding the bill, always do. That's why the smart money lives on the Kansas side.
