Shawnee Tax Fight Underway

An upstart effort by a friend of the blog takes a swipe at politics as usual in a local suburb hopes to push back against municipal spending policy that would threatens to send this enclave down the same path as KCMO . . . For better and worse . . . Read more . . .

No More Taxes Shawnee

A policy wonk preview of the argument . . .

The week before the city of Shawnee jams the 21% no-sunset property tax hike on the ballot, (Feb. 11, 2019) ostensibly for the Shawnee Community Center, but REALLY an eternal slush fund for future projects they don't even know they want, let alone need. they decide to actually develop of their first ever PLAN!

And, to bolster the trumped up support for said projects with more dubious "Made As Instructed" community 'surveys' from ETC. (In 20 years,it's said they've never produced a negative citizen survey for any city or county client.)

The City {of Shawnee} has never had a long-term strategic plan or visioning document. Additionally we never have had a Parks and Recreation Master Plan. Specifically, the City is seeking assistance in creating a strategic plan, to include: CommunityStrategic Plan, Parks a Recreation Master Plan (to include a Parks Needs Assessment contracted through ETC), Community Survey (contracted through ETC), and Business Survey partnered with the Chamber of Commerce (contracted through ETC).

  2. And we wonder why the bottom 90% of the population can't afford a basic emergency.

I guess the academics will get right on it and figure it out.

  5. Hope shawnee fights this. This kind of thing always precedes a town going to shit because the city gets bloated and gets addicted to the money. Then when people move out because of tax rate they have to bring in hordes of people with shitty apartment complexes to try and regain the money they should never have had in the first place

  6. Shawnee City Councilwoman Lindsey Constance is trying to push the Community Center Tax plan by telling people who don’t want it, “it’s only xx dollars per month more, peopl3 can give up their fast food meals to pay for it”.

She is a twit. She presumes we all eat fast food. Compare home values in eastern Shawnee (built in the 1950’s) versus western Shawnee (built in the 2000’s and ongoing). The new Center would be oh so conveniently located in where ? Yup, rich western Shawnee.

Sick and tired of these spend-spend-spend politicians taking my money for shit we don’t need. Can we fix the aging sewer system here before we build a Community Center?

  7. Amen. Tired of disjointed planning for the city. The east part of Shawnee has so many zoning violations that are ignored. If people want to be like Lenexa, have the zoning department start noticing the violations like Lenexa does. Nieman Road Will it ever be finished. What with the bump out by Old Shawnee Pizza?
