Lame Duck Mayor Sly James Pushing Pre-K Sales Tax On Skeptical Kansas City Voters

He doesn't have much left to trade and this effort is opposed by community activists, schools and many residents. Here's the best info we've seen on the debate this week. Read more:

Mayor urges yes votes on Pre-K Plan, many in community still have questions

Kansas City Mayor Sly James is hosting a series of Town Hall meetings to discuss the proposed pre-K plan, which would implement a three-eighth cent sales tax for the next ten years to fund pre-K. This tax would generate roughly $30 million annually.

  1. Sly couldn’t care less about schools or Pre-K children. That’s why I’m skeptics. Who really gets this money?

  2. It is not the cities responsibility. Can't this be challanged in court ?

  3. You could start their education right at birth and the KCPS will still graduate them as illiterate eventually.

  4. Incompetence at unbelievable proportions.

Why doesn’t he just pull it out of the gobond money like he does with everything else.

  5. Sly is no Rahm Emanuel, Obama aide now mayor of Chicago, where schools really ARE part of the city budget and mandate.

If he wants to fix schools, run for school board.

  6. Poor Sly. Can't fix the pipes or the planes. Now desperate for relevance, hoping for an appointment by Bernie Sanders and AOC to something in WDC perhaps?

  7. In a 2-7-19 post on TKC Dr. Gayden Carruth exposed the lie in Slie's pre-K proposal.
“According to the mayor’s plan, only 25 to 30 percent of the approximately $30 million in sales-tax revenue will be spent for direct services to children during the first three years.” This would leave Slie a $21 to $22.5 million slush fund, as several on TKC has previously stated, for who knows what. It is very likely the money from this slush fund has already been spent. You can bet that after 3 years the direct services will be much less. The taxpayers of KCMO should definitely not support this money grabbing scheme.

  8. Yeah, I don't think Trump would name him to replace Betsy DeVoss as his Secy of Education....

but hey, if he did, it would be doing us all a favor. Get him out of town.

Like appointing Sam Brownback to God's ambassador, or whatever the HELL he is doing. Out of the country...

  9. Mayor Slushfund is so quick to raise taxes for things:

    GoBond
    Buck O'Neill Bridge tax
    Mid-Continent Public Library
    KC Public Library
Tax for development on the East side

    Just to name a few.

    When does it end?

All the while, all his developer buddies are paying a FRACTION of the taxes they should be paying if they are paying taxes at all. While at the same time, giving developers tax incentives, hand over fist, to build and do business in our town at the cost of the working class.

Whenever politicians want to get a tax passed, one of the first things they do is say, "it's for the kids...".

All in the name of #KorruptCity

  10. @7:46, he can't run for the School Board, he doesn't live in this State.

  11. @7:49, the "fine print" hasn't been made public, but you can bet that Sly James would continue to control the "missing 70%" even after he leaves Office.

  13. James regularly claims that pre-K prepares kids better for kindergarten, as if that in itself were woth the cost and effort of the program. What he fails to say, and doesn't want us to know, is that a few years later there is no measurable educational difference between kids who attended pre-K and kids who did not attend pre-K. This is another a smoke-and-mirrors campaign to separate taxpayers from their hard earned money.

  16. Last refuge for a legacy that is trashed by his corruption. He never was never a smart manager, a responsible process kind of guy. The airport, the Streetcar, the vote structuring to be anything but representative.

Not going anywhere further I am afraid. Don't put AOC in the same bucket. She hasn't done those kinds of things. Keep watching.
