Kansas City Talks Privatizing Trash

A controversial move that many feel will improve service and save on pension cash. More on this one but for now here's the news worth picking up:

KCMO exploring plan to take over trash collection city-wide

  1. Wrong. Look at Water Department.

  2. Anything is better than the shit show of trash pickup in my neighborhood. It's never on time, days late, shit blowing around, recycling not picked up. You have leave the bags out because they might randomly show up at 6 am, a day late, or raccoons might shred the bags and you'll have a huger pile of shit in the yard. It's horrible. In the past 6 months, they've been a day late more often than on the proscribed day.

  3. I;M not 100% sure that the Johnson county landfill, in Shawnee, formerly owned by the late great Ron Deffenbaugh, now a less stellar operator, Waste Management, really WANTS to accept trash from the city of KCMO.

It's a bit different allowing "tipping rights" in perpetiuty-- to Superior (which was a legacy firm run by the former actual manager of Deffenbaugh), now owned by Republic. A great operator in the fight of their life over a sneaky Shawnee eminent domain case.

Those outfits serve the greater metro, many small towns.

But really, do we want to fill up OUR landfill in Shawnee, prematurely and needlessly, as a favor to the actual municipality of arrogant KCMO?

Wouldn't that be a hoot? Make KCMO haul their trash to Topeka to the Hamm landfill? Keep Shawnee's low rates and space available LONGER for ourselves and the other suburban towns that Ron Deffenbaugh supported politically for every "stinkin" (pun intended) city council candidate who asked?

RD was all about supporting the Little Guy. I know.

    1. We are already accepting the trash from KCMO. Seen all the O.P. shootings lately?

  4. Way back when the City ran trash pickups themselves, every time City Crews failed to pick up in the Northland for longer than three weeks, people used to haul their trash bags over to their local Councilperson's house and throw them in their driveways.

After about the fourth time this happened, the City started contracting with Private Companies to handle the pickups in the Northland - remember that tactic, it worked before!

(Of course, with the current Council, that would mean trips over into Kansas.)

    1. Well shoot, like 300 years ago something didn't work so I guess that means it can never work. Let's just give up and cry!

  6. There is more than enough room on the KCI airport grounds, which consists of approximately 9000 acres, for KCMO to create their own landfill. Edgemoor would be more than happy to incorporate this add on and tourist attraction into the design. The design would also incorporate 5 star landfill restaurants. Their would be a trash drop off service for travelers just before they entered the terminal.

  7. you know once upon a time kc mo decided to hire private trash haulers supposely it would save millions of dollars so they got rid of the fleet of trash trucks now the good city decides to buy another fleet of trash trucks costing who know how much money they will pay out if only they would have kept them delivering and picking up trash we wont be in the hole of millionns beside there went our free trash bags forever
