Kansas City Mayor Sly Keeps Pushing Pre-K Sales Tax Community Repeatedly Rejected

KCPS leaders have spoken out against this one and everybody from the Urban League to More2 have opposed the proposal.

Here's his bitch before tonight's start of the campaign:

Mayor Sly: "Many people ask why we simply can’t support pre-K with state and federal funding.

"Well, the truth of the matter is that state and federal funds for pre-K simply don't meet the needs of our children or our school districts. Currently, over 2,400 families qualify for only 1,000 federally-funded Headstart seats. What's more, Missouri ranks 42nd out of 43 states that fund early childhood. And KCPS is losing funds.

"In fact, at the Kansas City Public Schools' recent Business Meeting on January 23, 2019, leaders shared that they anticipate losing 120 seats in 2019 and 100 more in 2020 due to grants expiring . . ."

"Our pre-K implementation program helps to solve these problems for both the families and the school districts."

  1. The Voters don't want it and the Schools don't want it, is there anyone other than Sly James who wants this additional tax?

  2. Seriously, how much shit do we have to fund around here?

Has someone made an itemized list of all the major taxes that are levied against KC citizens while this city still tries to push "affordable housing"? I really would like to see a easy to read and itemized list of off this that's already being paid for

  3. I would consider paying this tax if the last 8 years were not filled with a tax for everything. City hall never looks at its budget for how to fund its priorities. Just give us a new tax on top of all the other ones we do not know if they work.

Not to mention his corporate pals get massive tax breaks making the rest of us pay more to cover their share. I don't go to work each day to pay Cordish for Three Light.

  4. @8:19AM that's part of the problem. People don't realize just how over-taxed this city is. I think if someone were to produce the documentation that you mentioned, many mouths around the city would hit the floor.

The problem with this city and our government in general is the fact that the quick fix is to always raise taxes to fix a problem. Not reduce spending/waste. Throw additional money at it. And that's a huge reason why we're in the situation we're in.

A wise man once said, "Nothing good has ever come from giving the government more money". Think about that for a minute....

S'lie wants to have his cake and eat it too. He wants to prop up all his rich friends with our money (see the Loew's hotel that's currently under construction). Then when propping up his rich buddies creates shortages in the budget, he wants to raise taxes to fix roads, schools, libraries, etc. I'm fairly certain that if we made all his rich buddies pay their fair share, like us normal citizens do, we'd be MUCH better off and wouldn't have to constantly raise taxes for roads, schools, libraries, etc.

As it were, thanks to him, Queen Kay, Cleaver, on down the line, we're trapped in this foolish cycle of corporate welfare and having tax the working class to make up the difference. And I'm not real sure any of the candidates running as his successor has the stones to really change anything. So there's likely no end in sight.

  5. Obviously he is totally clueless when it comes to economics and math.

  6. The City can't manage what it is responsible for, such as KCI and the Water Dept!! Why would we raise our taxes for something the City is NOT responsible for. Just pissing away our money and sending more people to JoCo!! Thanks Slie!! The sooner you ane Jolie are out of here, the better.

  7. Will the pre-K ed program include gun control ?

  8. No means No Slyster move on you're just about out the door.

  9. This will just become another slush fund for the city. The school already offers many pre-K programs. Throwing money at pre-K will not do anything if the parents do not send their kids.
Everywhere, except city hall, No means No even with the meto movement.

  10. James has outlived his usefulness in the City. He needs to retire immediately. His leadership for the City has been a big negative.

Anti-democratic Street Car extension with unfair taxation.

  11. Clay talks about going in and auditing City Hall and its programs and spending. I would vote for Clay on this single issue.

  12. Sly has obviously promised this money to one of his developer friends, otherwise he wouldn’t be pushing it so hard. You know he couldn’t care less about pre-k children.

  13. Only if it includes gun safety classes.

  14. When sly was in private practice Kenner James law firm allegedly scammed folks who sought justice from businesses who wronged them.

Allegedly his law firm especially ms.
Kenner would allegedly deceive clients on what they were paid for damages.

Giving trusting clients morsels of proceeds from pain and suffering. And allegedly keeping the lions share of money from clients for themselves. Wow...

One case yielded sly so much cash he allegedly split from the firm opening up new law office.

Targeted folks using kprs radio to get clients. Lots of folks caught on to this.

Sly was allegedly on board of one of the entities that clients sought justice from... total conflict of interest.

Not right folks and they're mayor...

  15. Wherever there's an ambulance to chase, he'll be there. Wherever there's a slush fund to swindle from taxpayers, he'll be there. Wherever there's crime and infrastructure issues to ignore, he'll be there too.

  16. Sly James is a tragic leader who time and time again has shown a lack of leadership with this Council.
This is nothing more than the attempt to create another tax revenue stream for the general slush fund. He will create a committee which like his other committees will turn out to be a worthless group of employees who have zero ROI.

  17. Sales taxes are very regressive. These numerous, small increases in sales taxes take needed money right out of the pockets of those already in poverty. Tax on top of tax on top of tax.

Everybody wants the best education for kids, starting with pre-K.

But no one wants another sales tax.

FAIL. Try again with another funding source.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Sales taxes are fairly apportioned. Those who have more money spend more money and pay more in sales taxes. The opposite for those who have less money.

  19. Why do kids need Headstart anyway? If, as a parent, you can’t have your kid ready to perform kindergarten-level lessons, then you really should get yourself sterilized.

  20. And gobond money is being spent on sidewalks and streets........ hahahahaha!

If you idiots vote yes on this you all are the biggest dumbass’s evar!

  21. Sly always thought he was smarter than everyone, that he could use his fake charm to get his agenda through the voters and council. Never did trust him and will be glad when he is gone.....and hope he takes Jolie with him!

  22. bet the dumb fucks in k c pass that tax never learned anything from the airport

    ReplyDelete
  23. Even after all the piles of steaming crap Sly has left the taxpayers of KCMO to clean up, his final two fiascos and what he'll be remembered for, are the pre-K tax and the airport terminals.
A "legacy" of under-the-table dealing, manipulating city finances, inappropriate priorities, accumulating debt, and endless hype and outright lying.
The curtain has finally been pulled away and reality doesn't look so frosty.
No wonder we haven't heard much from Hernandez for quite a long while.
Lots of janitorial work for the next mayor and council and, from the list of names so far, none of them look up to the job.
