The toy train KILLED another local biz as the fake ridership numbers don't translate into real money at the end of the day. We can debate the merits of the fare but the fact is this place SURVIVED FOR A GENERATION without help from the streetcar but lasted only a few years after the tracks and bad parking chased away most of their lunch traffic. A new hipster restaurant is on the way but the reality is that a great many biz owners along the line have complained about broken promises and fewer customers despite the constant stream of taxpayer funded hype. Read betwixt the lines in this report:
Cascone's Grill closing after decades in the River Market, new concept coming | The Kansas City Star
Cascone's Grill, at 15 E. Fifth St., plans to shut down on Feb. 28. A new concept, Estelle's, by the owner of Anton's Taproom, will open in the space.
No fing way. Been going there 25 plus years for the best fried chicken anywhere. The everyday specials are great too.
ReplyDeleteThe street car and the change in parking lots to residential only then more recently metered parking made it a bitch to parking.
Pray they open a new location.
That’s life in a capitalistic country. Only the strong survive. You think they should be subsidized to stay? Oh well, let’s see what comes in after them.
ReplyDeleteIt is a shame. KC has changed for the worse just in the last 4 year's or so. It's very depressing anymore.

Delete^^^WTF??? No, we don't think they should be subsidized to stay, but we also don't think the millennials renting taxpayer funded apartments and riding the free toot toot should be subsidized either.
ReplyDeleteCapitalist, my ass. That's socialism for some at the expense of long-term successful businesses.
I wouldn't worry about it too much, you sweathogs will adapt and find a new place to continually get fatter.
ReplyDeletethats a shame used to eat there back in the 60s when i worked at the speedometer shop around the corner good food and didnt cost a lot will be missed by the oldtimers
ReplyDeleteThe irony being that Cascone's is so much more authentically Kansas City than anything in Mayor Bullhorn's Magic Money Pit, including the streetcar that killed it.
ReplyDeleteUp next, artisanal hot dogs made for you by some people with ear gauges and lumberjack costumes. Don't worry if you don't like it, it'll fail.
7:41 speaking of which, some asshole from Kansas had a hotdog place across from the golden ox about ten years ago, that dipshit was selling hotdogs for $10. Glad that dickhead didn’t last long down there.
ReplyDeleteParking was the key issue. The streetcar is not a viable transportation choice. You still have to drive everywhere in this frickin town.
ReplyDelete2/17 6:58 PM BOOM! Great response!!
ReplyDeleteKC will always be a commuter town and that will not change. The streetcar discourages people from driving downtown and the river market. Anyone who has been down in the river market on a saturday afternoon knows it basically impossible to navigate with the streetcar. It discourages a lot of people from coming to eat at these places. I lived there not too long ago and wasn't bad for me because I had a parking pass for a garage, but I can't imagine anyone from the suburbs even wanting to fuck with it. This is idealism meeting reality and reality wins
ReplyDelete^^^^ You can actually park further out, say Union Station, and ride the street car all the way down to the River Market.
ReplyDeleteI mean, do you have some stats that back up the streetcar discouraging people from driving downtown?
Oh, sure, young fams with kids, or grandparents with kids, aren't too eager to pay to park at Crown Center and Union Station, plus doing an extra load and unload of the kiddies, especially in strollers, just to ride the over-hyped Two Mile TooT Train. And, what a big PITA to get back in the TooT with the heavy bags of produce, the damp flowers and herbs in trays, the eggs, and the lunch doggy bags, with or without kiddies and strollers.
